Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Longtown? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over Longtown and the rest of Cumbria. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. When the engine has not turned over and the fuel is still in the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Call us before all else starts, so you'll hear what follows from there.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for a few miles. People have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never fire it up. And having started, don't trust it: the fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
  • Flicking your ignition on usually primes your system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition be.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It won't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on English Street, anywhere — a tricky place for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a car that never shifted.
  • The van arriving rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning CA6 5, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Have both ready before you ring.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three queries — what went in, about how much, plus whether the car has been turned over. The replies determine all that follows.

How far you travelled is what we care about, not how long your vehicle has been sitting — and this is why. Diesel does two roles on its way through the engine: it burns, and before burning it greases the injection pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first only. So a fast top-up on the trip in, it dawning on you around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf left outside Gretna Green since quarter past eight shows those couple of miles were done with the pump working on a fuel robbed of a lot of its protection. Phone us then keep the vehicle precisely where it sits.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both prepared. Your BMW 3 Series will have seemed entirely ordinary on the way back from Longtown Primary School — they all do, and that's the catch. Diesel into a petrol car generally will not run at all: the person stops, and so does the damage. Petrol into a diesel starts, ticks over, pulls away like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication your fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, because behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

Easy job, this one — till someone drives it home. A diesel Peugeot 308 parked by Graham Arms Hotel with petrol in your tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, and so park the car then phone once it's light. Expect a query about that drive there, though. Short and chilly is precisely where petrol battles to burn, and what will not burn can slip past the piston rings and into the sump.

We flush the fuel lines rather than only clearing the tank, and the reason is that thinned fuel has already arrived at the filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance genuinely assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Vauxhall Astra parked up near War Memorial a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Ring us then leave it off.

It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went soft, the idle turned ragged, and your diesel Skoda Superb is now sitting near Longtown Library. That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure properly rather than your engine packing up — and because there's no dashboard light for it, cars in that position generally get driven again before anybody calls. Do not. Switch it off then phone us.

Can petrol be pumped from a diesel at the forecourt?

Plenty of this work starts at a pump, meaning a good share of it is completed on site. We work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the owner's consent, and so if you're still at Shell that's usually where the drain gets done.

Before your engine has started — a forecourt is the only setting this is caught. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the keys settle how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where your car stands.

Staff will normally pitch in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get past. Welcome the assistance. Starting it just to move four vehicle lengths isn't.

Longtown and the towns near it

Blackbank, Westlinton, Metal Bridge, Scotsdike, Carwinley — each of these on our trips that take us out to Longtown itself, a riverside town.

There are pages for the majority of places in Cumbria, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off the list says nothing about whether our technicians come. Guessing is the mistake to skip, above all on the boundary or somewhere your satnav struggles. Contact us to ask.

See the map for the area covered on this page. Our technicians work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and the vehicle never needs to move to us.

Longtown: broken down wherever you stopped

A chance to pull in anywhere safe doesn't fall to everybody. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside High Street since you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it's the usual kind.

Clear of the motor if it is not sensible to wait there, by it if it is. Never start up the motor to nurse the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mixture further into the system. Our van driving to an inconvenient spot is no trouble for us, and it is much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

The local M6 is the one that counts now, and lies under 3 miles from Longtown. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Come off at the next sensible junction, switch off, and never restart the vehicle to reposition. On a longer run — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors, and mention it when you ring. It alters what we bring.

Where is Longtown?

Longtown is a small town situated on the River Esk in Cumbria, with a population of around 2176 people. Longtown sits at an elevation of 19 metres, close to the Scottish border and near the towns of Blackbank, Westlinton, and Metal Bridge. Longtown is characterized by its semi-detached housing and riverside setting, located approximately 8 miles from Carlisle. Longtown is also relatively distant from London, at around 268 miles away.

The call-out around Longtown, step by step

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies alter what the work really is.
  • Your tank gets cleared of everything.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that started the trouble.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Our engineers fire it up and check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

At that point it is ready to set off. We do all of this wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been noticed soon, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Longtown?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas this problem underneath it is a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Longtown page. Both are ours to deal with.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Longtown

We can't put one price on this page truthfully, because the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much that tank can hold.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Longtown drivers

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Longtown?

Yes, and it is where a big part of this work gets done. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers work at Gulf and the other forecourts locally regularly.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the motor has run counts a lot more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out properly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. Afterwards? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Standing next to it?

Do not switch your engine on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car after that. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than people fear.
