Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Loudwater? Don't Start It

Don't fire up the engine. While the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not yet been started, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is determined in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, all over Loudwater and the rest of Hertfordshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. One ring our way will be enough: our team shall tell you what follows from here. Try this right away.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not fire it up — and never depend on it if it does start. That is the part most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel normally just can't run, so the person stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, ticks over and drives off just fine for a couple of miles. It is not fine. It is grinding your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Leave your ignition off as well. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it ignites it protects your high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, which carries that petrol out of your tank then into precisely those parts.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay still if it is safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Loudwater Lane, anywhere — a difficult location for us beats a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a car that never shifted.
  • Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode starting WD3 4, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.
  • What went in, about how much, and also whether the car has started — the three replies decide your whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Quarter past eight, a hurried refuel on the drive in, and the penny drops at about eleven — by that point your diesel Volkswagen Golf has been parked at Rickmansworth for three hours. Phone then leave the vehicle right where it is. The journey in is the thing that matters now, because diesel does two jobs on its way through a motor: it ignites, and before it burns it greases the injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were driven with your pump working on a fuel that had shed most of the protection it is designed around — which is why the thing we ask is how many miles you travelled, not how long your vehicle has been standing.

Petrol in your Renault Megane, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at Waitrose, somewhere in Loudwater? Then call us, and leave your engine out of that — not even to get out of that spot. Somebody heads your way. Tank cleared, fuel lines cleaned, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile pulls very little, and so these tend to be the simple cases.

Shift it out of that gateway and fix it later — that is what somebody will say, and it's wrong. Sitting on the zig-zags outside Rickmansworth Park Junior Mixed and Infant School, a wrongly fuelled diesel Peugeot 308 is a hassle and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for courtesy, it's no longer a tank issue but a fuel system one, since priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes past your filter towards your pump. Let them complain. Phone us.

Clearing the Dacia Duster, changing your filter where there's a workable one, flushing the fuel lines, putting clean fuel through the full system: that's the job, and it's shaped by the worst of that resting in the fuel lines instead of in that tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from close to All Saints Parish Church — which side the filler is on, whether a van can pull up alongside without blocking the road, and if the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual spot our technicians work, and so the place itself is rarely the problem. A narrow parking bay trumps a car driven somewhere more convenient.

Knocking, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That's a misfilled diesel BMW 5 Series telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, by The Junction or anywhere else, and never start it to find a better place.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on the forecourt?

Plenty of this work starts at the pump, so a large chunk of that gets finished there. The drain typically takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the owner's consent, that is somewhere we work, and often.

Before the motor has fired — a garage is the only place it is caught. Fuel pulled out of your tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is started and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and your lines along with the tank. That is still not a calamity, and our technicians deal with it where the vehicle sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

The attendants will normally happily wheel it clear of the pump so the next motorist can get past. It is worth doing. Cranking it to move four vehicle lengths is not.

Service near Loudwater

Chandlers Cross, Rickmansworth, Micklefield Green, Croxley Green, Church End — every one of those on our trips that carry us out to Loudwater as well, a residential suburb.

If yours is not on that list that does not mean we do not come — there are separate pages for the majority of places across Hertfordshire, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours. Call us and check rather than presuming — boundaries especially, and wherever the satnav tends to struggle with.

That map shows the area this page spans. The lot is territory our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't drive the vehicle anywhere.

Broken down by the kerbside near Loudwater

The opportunity to pull over somewhere safe doesn't fall to everyone. A routine call for us instead of a rare one: realised after setting off, ended up by the verge beside Sarratt Lane or at a lay-by with the hazards on.

Safe right there? Wait by it. Not safe? Get out and clear of it. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the problem: fire it up to reach somewhere better and that mix goes further into the system with every mile driven. However tricky the place, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for your car than pressing on.

Run it already? Stop, then read this

under a mile out of Loudwater, the local M25 is what counts now. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power falls away, the idle gets uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Come off at the first sensible exit, switch off, and do not start the vehicle to move it. It alters what our engineers bring, and so say so when you call: on a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors.

About Loudwater

Loudwater is a small suburban area in Hertfordshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 86 metres. Loudwater lies approximately 18 miles from London and 9 miles from St Albans, with nearby places including Chandlers Cross, Rickmansworth, and Micklefield Green. Loudwater is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its relatively affluent demographic. Loudwater has a population of around 730 residents, making it a small but distinct community within the wider region.

Once our technicians arrive with you around Loudwater: what happens

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses change what the work actually is.
  • We empty that tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that created the problem.
  • We pour clean diesel in and bleed your system.
  • The engine is fired up and checked to make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

At that point it is ready to drive away. We do all of this wherever your car has ended up, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, it is very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Loudwater is a distinct matter

The issue isn't the same, though the first rule is — never start it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Loudwater page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Loudwater pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What changes the price is laid out below, because the job is not one job and our engineers cannot honestly put a single price on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Whether a van can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel questions from Loudwater drivers

I am on a forecourt in Loudwater. Can you drain it on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this gets done. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the engine has run matters a lot more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mix has been sucked through your fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then leave the vehicle off. Driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable much more frequently than motorists expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different issue from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Keep the engine switched off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
