Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Low Fold? Don't Start It
Do not start the engine. While the petrol is still in the tank and the engine has not turned over, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets determined in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, across Low Fold and the remainder of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. We can tell you what the following step is. Contact us — this comes before anything else.
The first five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Never crank it. Started anyway? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol car normally won't run, so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for a couple of miles. People get that muddled. It isn't all right — the fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
- Diesel ignites, and before it burns it protects — the high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition alone too: switching it on is usually sufficient to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into precisely those components.
- That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
- A car that has not shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Manor Road? Hazards on, then leave it there. A tricky place works for us better than a started engine.
- Before you ring, get your position. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting LS18 4 — that's what settles whether our van arrives or circles.
- Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, approximately how many litres, plus whether your car has run. Those three answers decide the full job.
Clearing petrol from the diesel on a forecourt
It kicks off at a pump, usually. Regularly the job wraps up on site as well. We work on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, so if you're still at Esso that is normally where this drain takes place.
At the forecourt, the mistake is caught with your engine never run, and nowhere else does that. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the fuel lines together with that tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our technicians put it right where your car stands. What decides it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.
Attendants will usually pitch in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get by. Welcome the help. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.
Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off outside Morrisons now. Time gone by is not the thing our engineers need. Fuel pulled by the pump is.
Three replies settle much of the work: what got in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for them as soon as we get to the vehicle in the car park by The Fleece. After that the contaminated mix comes out of the tank, the fuel lines are rinsed, and where your Mercedes C-Class has a replaceable filter, it comes off. After new diesel is in and the system primed, we fire it up and make sure it runs properly before you pull away.
Leave the Audi A3 near Willow Green Christian Fellowship then call us. We are blunt about not driving on as a worn-out pump sheds, and what it gives off travels downstream with your fuel to your injectors downstream.
Rattling, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That is a misfuelled diesel BMW 5 Series telling you what's wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, near Kingdom Hall or anywhere else, and do not start the vehicle to find a better location.
What occurs next is the problem. The motor straight away pulls the petrol left sitting in the filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, as emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put new diesel in, somebody sure of themselves will tell you — and that advice is half true, since do it to a diesel Vauxhall Astra parked up, Horsforth Cemetery Chapel say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Phone us instead. We flush your circuit and take your filter off where the car has a working one, and that is the difference between your car being fixed and the vehicle simply starting.
Coverage near Low Fold
Being a residential suburb, Low Fold has a frequent call, whilst the villages close by go along on the same trip: Horsforth and West End, Newlay and Cragg Hill, Rodley.
Not on the list? It says nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and the majority of towns around West Yorkshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Presuming is the mistake to avoid, especially on the boundary or somewhere your phone goes wrong. Contact us to check.
Check this map for the ground included here. Your vehicle doesn't need to come to us. We work throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Low Fold: stuck wherever you pulled up
Some drivers have no safe spot to stop at all. If you noticed after setting off and ended up by the verge of Victoria Mews, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that's a routine call for us and not a rare one.
Whether you stay with the vehicle or move clear of it hangs on whether staying nearby looks wise. Don't start up your motor to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that blend further into your fuel system. Driving on causes the car far more harm than a technician driving out to a difficult place, and that is no problem for us.
So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles
under 5 miles from Low Fold, your Inner Ring Road is what counts now. A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.
The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Say so when you call. What our technicians bring changes.
Where is Low Fold?
Low Fold is a suburban area situated on the riverside in West Yorkshire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and local amenities. Low Fold lies close to the city of Leeds, approximately 4.6 miles from the city centre, and is near other suburban areas such as Horsforth and West End. Low Fold is characterised by its relatively low elevation of 121 metres above sea level, and its proximity to the river. Low Fold forms part of the wider Leeds urban area, with easy access to the city's facilities and services.
Once we reach you in Low Fold: what follows
- Our technicians find out what was put in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
- Away flows the tainted mixture.
- What is remaining in the system should not be what caused the problem, and so your fuel lines get purged and the fuel filter cleared.
- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
- Once it is started, our technicians check it runs correctly on new diesel.
That leaves it ready to drive away. Our engineers do all of this wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, it's very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.
AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Low Fold?
If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is unchanged — don't start the vehicle — but this fault isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the protection the fuel system relies on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
AdBlue removal in Low Fold has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. Our engineers handle both.
Low Fold pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain
We cannot put one figure on this page honestly, since the job isn't one job. What moves it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for our van.
A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run. For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.
Petrol in diesel: common questions around Low Fold
I am on a forecourt around Low Fold. Can you drain it here?
Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this gets done. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run. What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system — since though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?
Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more often than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
No. Carried out correctly, draining and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.
Waiting next to it?
Keep the engine shut off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later. Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
