Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Low Green?
Do not fire up the motor. If the fuel is still inside the tank and the engine has not been started, a drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, throughout Low Green and the remainder of North Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Phone so we shall explain what follows next before you try any more.
Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Never crank it. Started regardless? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally cannot run, so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off happily, for several miles. Drivers get that reversed. It is not fine — that fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.
- Diesel burns, and before it burns it protects — that injection pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be also: switching it on is usually all it takes to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into exactly those components.
- That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
- We'd rather get to a tricky place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to handle than a motor that has not shifted. On the verge on Prospect Cottages, that means hazards on and leave the car.
- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts HG3 2, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Tell us what was put in, about how many litres, and if the car has run. Those three facts settle the entire call-out.
Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, left outside Harrogate since breakfast? The afternoon has cost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is dormant. It was the drive in that pushed diluted diesel through the pump. Phone before you move the car.
How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both ready. Your Audi A4 will have seemed perfectly usual on the way back from Darley Primary School — they all do, and that's the snag. Diesel into a petrol motor usually will not run at all: the driver stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel fires up, ticks over, moves off like nothing happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication your fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, since behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.
Your pump isn't turning, so whatever your diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to Low Wood, none of that is happening now. Nothing is getting worse while it sits. Take your time over this — but never drive it home to buy any.
About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Dacia Duster parked near CCCC barely two streets on. Ring us, and leave it off. A short hop does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so your filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence flushing the fuel lines rather than only clearing your tank.
Turn off where you have stopped, and do not start it to find somewhere better — close to Christ Church or anywhere at all. Knocking, an uneven idle, white smoke and a dead throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 1 Series telling you what's wrong.
Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel
A large part of this job ends up finished at the pump, because that's where it usually kicks off. Still at Independant? Then that's normally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the station.
Nowhere other than a forecourt can it be caught with your engine still unrun. We can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to reach past that tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the key are what decide that.
Clear of the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the staff help you push the vehicle. Worth it. Starting the car over four car lengths? Don't.
Parts our team cover near Low Green
Low Green is a residential suburb, and so our vans go out to it and to the places near it on the usual trips: Darley, Sheepcote Hill, Stocks Green, Moke Hill and The Holme.
If yours is not on the list that does not mean we do not come — there are separate pages for nearly all places in North Yorkshire, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours. Ring us and ask instead of presuming — boundaries above all, and wherever your satnav might get wrong.
The area this page includes sits on the map. The lot is ground our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never bring the car anywhere.
Stranded by the roadside in Low Green
The chance to pull over somewhere safe doesn't come to everybody. Set off, then realised? Finished up by the verge beside Sheepcote Lane, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a routine call here. Not a rare one.
Whether you sit with the car or step away from it depends on if staying nearby seems sensible. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mix further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. However awkward the place, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that's far better for your car than driving on.
So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles
This is where your A1(M) comes in — under 15 miles away from Low Green. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
The first sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. It changes what our engineers bring, so tell us when you phone: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

Once our technicians reach you around Low Green: what follows
- The answers change the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.
- The polluted fuel is pulled out of your tank.
- Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that created the issue.
- Our engineers put new diesel in and prime your system.
- When it is turned on, our technicians make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.
The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. We do everything wherever your car has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, it's very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.
AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Low Green?
If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — do not start the car — yet this problem isn't. Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the protection the fuel system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and deposits.
AdBlue removal around Low Green has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. Our engineers deal with both.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Low Green
What changes the price is listed below, since the job isn't one job and we cannot frankly put a single figure on this page.
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is safe for a technician.
Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.
Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Low Green
Fuel drains on a Low Green petrol station forecourt
Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this happens. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there is possible.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Whether the engine has run counts much more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?
Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what takes the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more commonly than motorists expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the car.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
It isn't a change, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.
Waiting next to it?
Leave the car switched off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it after that. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
