Lowlands: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Not for a moment, and not for moving it: your engine stays off. Pause there. Drained and rinsed, right where it is: that is normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it stays that simple rests on the minutes to come more than on anything else. What follows is the sequence from here, anywhere around Lowlands you happen to be.

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

Before anything else, the following — following this sequence.

  • The ignition off, keys out. Turned on, your ignition can prime the system — and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank into the components it harms.
  • A fuller tank of the same mix is all topping up gives you, since it takes out nothing. So no more diesel.
  • Close to passing traffic? Then your hazards go on before everything else, and so the vehicle is simple to spot.
  • However short the distance, starting it to shift it is the mistake. On a forecourt, roll it clear of the petrol pump by hand instead, and ask the staff to lend a hand.
  • The first question we will ask is which fuel went in and about how much — and the till receipt shows both. Hold on to it.

Noticed on the move? Get off at the next exit if you are on the M4, under 5 miles from Lowlands, and pull over somewhere safe — not at the services farther on. Step one comes after that.

Lowlands fuel drain: has the engine run yet, or not?

One answer is what everything after this point rests on.

Not run, not even briefly:

  • Just your tank has petrol in it so far.
  • The work is a drain and a flush, normally done where the car is.
  • No position is better, and it's why the first step matters so much.

If it has been started, even for a second:

  • The fuel lines and the filter now carry petrol pulled out of that tank.
  • Run it further and that petrol gets to the fuel injectors, having gone through the fuel pump first.
  • The further it went, the larger the job — the lines, the fuel filter, and sometimes more besides.

The reason the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and the injectors as it passes through them, and petrol doesn't. Petrol sitting in a tank harms nothing. Petrol being pumped is wearing the components that move the car.

What to have ready when you call about petrol in a diesel from Lowlands

Whether the van circles or finds you comes down to a little planning.

  • Your whereabouts: a postcode starting NP44 1 works best.
  • Wherever you have pulled up, the road's name helps — whether that's Beech Close or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.
  • What a car park serves is the quickest way to find it, and so say the landmark — like the one at Aldi.
  • The vehicle. Make, model, plus that it's a diesel.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Lowlands page.
  • About how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle was in.
  • If it's run, how far and how heavily — as well as if it's run at all.
  • Sort who owns the car before we arrive: some hire or company agreements want the owner to approve this work, and that is faster beforehand.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then. Email is fine too if it can wait, with the vehicle parked at home, going nowhere.

Lowlands fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the damage while you wait. So hold to these.

  • Wait with the car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • Nobody — however kind — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to move your car a short way.
  • Additives remain in your boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of the petrol out once more.
  • No DIY clearing. Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is hazardous, and it leaves your fuel that has already gone beyond your tank.
  • Ignition remains off. Even for your radio or your windows.

Van arrived? The fuel drain, one step at a time

  • First, three questions: which fuel got in, the quantity, and has it run? Those replies decide this job, so our price follows them.
  • Out of the tank comes the polluted blend: the tank is emptied.
  • Your lines are purged. If it ran, the petrol has moved beyond the tank, and the fuel lines are carrying it.
  • Where the car has a workable filter, it's replaced; if not, cleared.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and the system is primed.
  • Starting the car. When the fuel system is primed with fresh diesel, we fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly.

Until it runs on clean diesel, we remain with it. The car returns to normal use right away, and lasting damage is very rare when it has been spotted quickly.

Lowlands, after the fuel drain: back on the road

  • Drive normally. There's nothing special to do once it's been started on clean fuel.
  • Give the first miles your attention. Smoke appearing, a warning light coming on, the idle going lumpy or your throttle stumbling: pull over and ring us back.
  • Keep your documents. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was carried out.
  • Check the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of the handle.
