Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Lundin Links?
If you have not turned on the engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor needs while the petrol is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not yet turned over, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Lundin Links or the rest of Fife, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Contact us before everything else begins, so you will learn what happens after that.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order
- While you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors suffer. That's why you do not crank it, and why you don't rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part most people get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically won't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.
- Leave the car's ignition alone too. Diesel has two jobs: it ignites, and before it ignites it greases your high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime the system, which moves that petrol out of your tank and into exactly those components.
- Don't tip diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it only gives you a larger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- Sit tight if it is sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Crescent Road, anywhere — a difficult place for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a car that never moved.
- Keep your whereabouts prepared before you phone. A postcode beginning KY8 6 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van arriving and the van circling.
- What got in, about how much, plus whether the car has run — these three facts shape the entire call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
On a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel
Plenty of this work starts at a forecourt, meaning a big share of it ends up finished there. We work on station forecourts regularly, with the station's consent, and so if you're still at Sainsbury's that's generally where the drain happens.
At the forecourt, the mistake gets caught with your motor never fired, and nowhere else does it. Fuel sucked out of your tank and through the filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is fired up and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the lines together with your tank. That is still not a disaster, and we deal with it where your car sits. What decides it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was read.
The staff will usually offer to move the car clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. It is worth doing. Moving the car four bays does not justify firing it.
Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel Skoda Octavia, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off at Lidl now. Time passed is not the thing our technicians need. Fuel pulled by your pump is.
What we'll ask is if the run there was short and chilly, as that is where petrol is slowest to burn fully — and whatever does not burn can get past the rings and into the oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Audi A4 sitting in the car park by Railway Inn carrying a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing degrades as it stands, and so park the vehicle overnight and phone in the morning.
Here's the entire process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which explains the usual Lundin Ladies Golf Club call — a diesel Ford Focus, out there without a murmur and back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it escapes past those gaps instead of building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the motor was engineered around. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.
Why we are firm about not driving on: your pump rests ahead of the fuel injectors, so whatever a worn pump loses moves downstream with the fuel. Leave the Mercedes E-Class near Largo Library and Community Hub then call us.
Repaired and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is the circuit: our technicians flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there is a working one. Compare that with the sure of themselves tip you will get — drain the vehicle, refill with new diesel. Half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Peugeot 2008 by Montrave Hall and it will start, which is exactly why the suggestion sounds reasonable. Then the engine pulls the petrol left behind in your filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, since draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead.
Lundin Links and the areas beside it
Those same trips get us to Drummochy, Lower Largo, Upper Largo, Scoonie and Leven Links along with Lundin Links, which is a residential suburb.
There are separate pages for the majority of places across Fife, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from this list says nothing about if our technicians come. Contact us and enquire instead of assuming, particularly where you are on the boundary or anywhere the satnav struggles with.
The patch the page covers appears on this map. Your vehicle does not need to move to us. We operate throughout all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Broken down at the kerbside around Lundin Links
Some people find no sensible spot to pull in at all. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Woodielea Road as you realised after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the ordinary kind.
Okay right there? Remain by it. Not safe? Step out and clear of it. Do not fire it up to get to a better place. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the blend deeper into the system. Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than our van heading out to an inconvenient spot, and that's no problem for us.
Run it already? Pull over, and read this
This is where your M90 counts, under 25 miles away from Lundin Links. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power drains away, your idle turns lumpy, and there may be some smoke.
Take the first exit that's sensible, stop there, and don't start the car to move it. Suppose the worst of it on a long trip. Anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our technicians bring changes.

What follows when our technicians get to you around Lundin Links
- The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.
- The tainted mixture comes out of the tank.
- Our technicians flush the fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what is left in the system isn't what caused the problem.
- Our technicians put new diesel in and prime the fuel system.
- We turn it on and make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.
The car is then ready for you to pull away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been spotted soon, and since everything is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.
AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Lundin Links?
The problem isn't the same, though the first rule is — don't fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol weakens your diesel and removes the protection the system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue instead.
Both are ours. There is a separate Lundin Links page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Lundin Links
Our engineers cannot put one price on this page truthfully, because this job is not one job. What moves it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
- Where your car is, and if our van can safely reach and work on it.
Tell us your vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range. If it isn't time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Petrol in diesel queries from Lundin Links drivers
At a petrol station around Lundin Links, can you do a fuel drain there?
Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this happens. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the station's permission we work at Shell and the other forecourts nearby all the time.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system.
I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?
Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more often than motorists fear.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to remain off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. It belongs to a separate issue from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
Still with your car?
Leave the engine turned off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on. A stationary, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than drivers fear.
