Lundwood: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens
Not for a moment, and not for moving it: the motor stays off. Stop there. Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is normally a drain plus a flush, done right where the car stands, and what happens in the next few minutes determines that more than anything else. What follows is the order from this point, wherever in Lundwood you happen to be.
Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel
Go through the following in order, before you do anything else.
- Take the keys out. Even your ignition on its own can prime the system, drawing petrol out of the tank to precisely the parts it damages, and so leave the car off entirely.
- No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of the petrol — it just leaves you with extra of the same mixture.
- Near moving traffic? Then the hazards come on before anything else, and so your car is simple to see.
- The staff will normally help you roll it away from the pump. Let them, then move it by hand — never on your engine, even for a few yards.
- Which fuel, and roughly how much? The receipt answers both, and that is where our first question starts. Don't throw it away.
Still on the move when you noticed? Come off the M1 at the next junction if that's where you are, under 5 miles from Lundwood, and stop somewhere sensible instead of pushing on to the services. Then start at stage one.
The fork in every Lundwood fuel drain: has it run yet?
Everything after this point rests on one answer.
If it has never been started:
- The petrol is still in the tank and nowhere else.
- Where the car stands is usually where the work happens: a drain, then a flush.
- Being here is as good as it gets — which is the entire point of step one.
If your motor has run, even briefly:
- From that tank, through the fuel filter, into the lines: that's how far the petrol has travelled.
- Run it further and the petrol gets to the injectors, having passed through the fuel pump first.
- The job grows with the distance — lines cleaned, filter seen to, sometimes more.
Petrol doesn't lubricate. Diesel does, protecting your pump and injectors as it flows through, which is why the line sits where it does. In that tank, left alone, petrol does no harm. Petrol being pumped is wearing the parts that move the car.
Lundwood, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call
A little preparation is the difference between a technician that finds you and a technician that goes round.
- Your location: a postcode starting S71 5 serves best.
- The street or the car park. A road name is a help — Littleworth Lane, or wherever you have pulled up.
- Car parks are located more easily by what they serve: say the one outside Aldi, and it is simple.
- The vehicle. Make, model, plus that it is a diesel.
- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Lundwood page.
- The quantity: the receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you had the nozzle in.
- Whether it has run. And if it has, how far plus how heavily.
- Whose motor it is. Some hire or company agreements want the owner to approve this work, and that's quicker settled before we arrive than after.
Call 0333 366 0103 once you have got that together — or, if the vehicle is at home, going nowhere, use .
The wait for a Lundwood fuel drain, and what to do in it
Hold to these: kindly meant help does the damage during the wait.
- Wait with the vehicle if it is safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
- A kind passer-by does not start it. Nor does anyone wanting to check it still works, or moving it a couple of yards.
- Additives remain in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of the petrol out again.
- Siphoning petrol into a can by the kerbside is dangerous — and it still leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond the tank. Don't try a home-made drain.
- Keep your ignition off — the windows and your radio included.
The fuel drain, step by step, after our van arrives
- Three queries. What was put in, how much, and if it's run. The replies decide the job, which is why our price comes after them and not before.
- Out of your tank comes the tainted blend: your tank is emptied.
- If it ran, the lines are holding petrol that has moved beyond that tank — so they're cleaned.
- Where your car has a usable filter, it is changed; otherwise, cleared.
- Clean diesel in, and the fuel system primed.
- Starting it. Once the system is bled with fresh diesel, we fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly.
We stay until it is running on new diesel. When it has been noticed early, long-term damage is very unusual, and the vehicle goes back to normal use right away.
Back on the road around Lundwood after your fuel drain
- After it has been started on fresh fuel, there is nothing special to do: drive normally.
- The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your signal to stop and ring us a second time.
- Hold on to your paperwork. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was carried out.
- Next time, check the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of its handle.
