Lydd: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens
Stop. Engine off. Keep the car that way — no second on, no shifting it anywhere. Drained and flushed, just where it is: that's normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it stays that straightforward rests on the minutes ahead far more than on anything else. What follows is the sequence from here, anywhere in Lydd you are.
Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel
Go through these in sequence, first.
- Priming the fuel system pulls petrol from the tank towards the parts it damages, and switching your ignition on can be enough to do that. So the keys get taken out, and your ignition stays off completely.
- A fuller tank of the same mix is all adding diesel gives you, since it takes out nothing. So no more diesel.
- Make the vehicle simple to see first — hazard lights on — if there's moving traffic anywhere close to you.
- By hand, never on the engine: that's how it leaves the petrol pump. Ask the forecourt attendants to help you roll, however short the miles.
- Hold on to your receipt. It says which fuel got in and roughly how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.
If you were still driving when you noticed, pull over somewhere sensible rather than pushing on for the services — on the M20, under 15 miles from Lydd, that means the next exit. Stage one follows.
Has it run yet? The fork in each Lydd fuel drain
Everything after this point depends on one answer.
If it has never been started:
- All the petrol sits inside your tank, and only there.
- Normally it's emptied and purged right where your car is.
- This is the best spot to be in, and the whole reason stage one matters.
If the engine has been run, even for a moment:
- Petrol has been drawn from that tank, through the filter and into your lines.
- Run it further and that petrol gets to your injectors, having passed through your fuel pump first.
- The job grows with the distance — lines cleaned, filter sorted, sometimes more.
The reason the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors as it flows through them, and petrol does not. In the tank, sitting still, petrol does no harm. As soon as it's pumped, petrol starts grinding whatever moves it.
Before you call about petrol in a diesel in Lydd: what our engineers need
Prepare a little, and the technician finds you instead of circling.
- Your whereabouts: a postcode beginning TN29 9 works best.
- A road name helps: Cannon Street, say, or whatever street you've stopped in. A car park does the trick too.
- What a car park serves is the easiest way to find it, and so say the landmark — such as the one at Spar.
- That it's a diesel, along with the make and model of your vehicle.
- Say which got in — petrol or AdBlue — because AdBlue is a different job, with a page of its own for Lydd.
- How much. Litres from your receipt, or how long the nozzle was in.
- The miles it covered, and how heavily, if it ran at all.
- Settle who owns the car before our technicians turn up: some hire or company agreements want the owner to authorise the work, and doing it quicker beforehand.
Phone 0333 366 0103 once you have got that ready — or, if the vehicle is at home, going nowhere, use .
Lydd fuel drain on its way? While you wait
Help, however well meant, is what does the damage whilst you wait. So hold to these.
- Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself clear of the traffic then wait away from it. If it's safe where it is, stay with it.
- Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's favour: nobody starts it.
- Additives stay in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of the petrol out again.
- No home-made emptying. Siphoning petrol into a can by the kerbside is risky, and it leaves your fuel that has already gone beyond the tank.
- Not for your radio, not for the windows: the ignition stays off.
The fuel drain, step by step, after the van gets there
- Three queries. What went in, how much, and whether it's run. The answers decide the job, which is why our price comes after them and not before.
- Emptying it's how the mixture gets taken out of that tank.
- Your lines are flushed. If it ran, the petrol has shifted beyond the tank, and your lines are holding it.
- The fuel filter is sorted. Cleared, or swapped where the vehicle has a workable one.
- Bleeding your system comes once fresh diesel is in.
- The start. With new diesel in and the fuel system bled, it is fired up and tested to make sure it runs properly.
Your car has clean diesel running through it before our technicians head off. The vehicle goes back to normal driving straight away, and lasting damage is very rare if it has been spotted soon.
After your fuel drain: back on the road in Lydd
- Drive normally. There's nothing unusual to do after it has been started on fresh fuel.
- Keep an eye on the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under the throttle tells you to pull over then ring us back.
- The work may come up later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep your documents.
- The handle's colour isn't the guide to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
