Petrol in Diesel

Lydgate: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on your engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still inside your tank and your engine has not been started, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Lydgate or the rest of South Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. A single ring to us is plenty: we shall tell you what happens next. Do it straight away.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not fire it up — and do not trust it if it runs. Here is the bit people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine filled with diesel usually just cannot run, so the driver stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives off without complaint for several miles. It's not fine. It's wearing out your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition remains off also — flick it on and you frequently prime your system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for precisely those components.
  • Do not dilute it. Diesel tipped on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • We'd rather come to a tricky place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to handle than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Vernon Delph, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.
  • Before you dial, get your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting S10 5 — that's what settles whether our van arrives or circles.
  • What got in, approximately how much, plus whether the engine has run — these three facts decide the full job. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

How far you went is what our technicians care about, not how long the car has been stood — and this is why. Diesel has two jobs on its way through an engine: it combusts, and before burning it greases the high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first only. So a hurried fill on the trip in, the realisation coming somewhere around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf left at Sheffield since quarter past eight shows those few miles were covered with the pump labouring on a liquid drained of a lot of its protection. Phone us then keep the car just where it is.

Your BMW 3 Series stays where it is in the car park outside The Sportsman for the whole job, which generally goes like this. First we ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since, given that most of the work rests on those replies. Your tank is emptied of the tainted mixture, the fuel lines are cleaned, and the filter comes off if it's a serviceable one. With clean diesel in and the system primed, your car is fired up and tested, and once it is running smoothly you drive away.

Out there happy, back gutless. If that was the run to Clough Fields, look at the tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the tight clearances supposed to build injection pressure — so every additional mile your diesel Nissan Qashqai covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, switch off, phone us.

Most of these occur somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical rather than slapdash — practically no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Dacia Duster, a fill-up near St Columba that you did not think about? Ring us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at the fuel injectors.

The filter, the lines, your pump and the rail: that is where the blend is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with your tank contents. So your tank isn't where most of the problem sits by this point, and a diesel Vauxhall Astra that got by Totley Tunnel Memorial needs your system flushed instead of cleared.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Lydgate

Draining petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

It begins at a forecourt, usually. Often enough the job finishes at one as well. Still at JET? Then that is generally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the site.

Nowhere else except a forecourt can this be spotted with your engine still cold. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the key determine how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as the tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where the car is.

Staff will usually pitch in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get past. Accept the help. Shifting it four spaces does not justify cranking the engine.

Lydgate and the areas next to it

The same runs take us to Stephen Hill, Crosspool, Den Bank, Sandygate and Carsick as well as Lydgate, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and nearly all locations around South Yorkshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Guessing is the mistake to avoid, above all on a border or somewhere your phone struggles. Call us to ask.

The ground this page spans sits on this map. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of that is territory our engineers cover, and none of it needs your car to move to us.

Broken down by the roadside in Lydgate

The opportunity to pull over anywhere sensible does not fall to everyone. A common call for us and not a rare one: realised after setting off, ended up by the verge beside Coppice View or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Whether you sit by the car or move clear of it turns on if sitting there feels safe. Never restart it to get to a nicer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mix deeper into the fuel system. We will bring our van to a difficult place without any trouble, and for the vehicle that's much better than pressing on.

Driven it already? Pull in, and see this

Here is where the M1 matters, under 10 miles away from Lydgate. Lost power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the next exit that is sensible, stop there, and do not restart it to move it. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 3 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors, and say so when you phone. It changes what our technicians bring.

Lydgate itself

Lydgate is a suburban area located in South Yorkshire, sitting approximately 2.2 miles west of Sheffield city centre. Lydgate occupies a position on high ground, with an elevation of around 238 metres, and is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock. Lydgate is situated near other local areas, including Stephen Hill, Crosspool, and Den Bank, and is home to a population of around 5079 residents.

What our engineers do when our engineers arrive with you in Lydgate

  • The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.
  • Away goes the polluted fuel.
  • What is remaining in your system shouldn't be what caused the problem, and so the fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleared.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • Your engine is turned on and checked to make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That leaves your car ready to set off. Our engineers do all of it wherever your car has stopped, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been caught quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Lydgate?

Never fire it up: that opening instruction stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and build-up instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Lydgate page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Lydgate

One price wouldn't be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a van.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Lydgate

At a petrol station around Lydgate, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it's where a big part of this work takes place. Our engineers attend Esso and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable much more regularly than motorists assume.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It's not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no. The pump still has to put up with it, as your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

You, and your car, still together?

Leave the engine turned off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere safe, turn it off and leave it off. A stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than motorists fear.
