Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Lydgate?

Don't start the engine. While the petrol is still inside the tank and the motor has not been started, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, throughout Lydgate and the remainder of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Phone before all else starts, so you'll see what happens next.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear down. This is why you do not fire it up, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the part drivers get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally won't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Turning your ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition off.
  • Do not weaken it. Diesel poured on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has not moved is the quickest one to deal with, and our team would rather drive to a tricky location than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Holmfirth Road, switch the hazards on then leave it there.
  • Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts HD9 7, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of arriving.
  • Three replies settle the entire job: the stuff you tipped in, the approximate volume of it, plus whether anything has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Can petrol be drained from a diesel on a forecourt?

Forecourts are where the job often begins, and where a big share of it finishes. The drain generally gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Murco? Given the owner's agreement, that's a spot our technicians work, and routinely.

A filling station is the single setting the mistake gets caught before the engine has run. Fuel pulled out of your tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the engine is switched on and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and the fuel lines as well as your tank. That is still not a calamity, and our engineers put it right where the car is. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Out from the petrol pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the staff help you roll it. Very much worth doing. Firing the car just for four car lengths? Not a chance.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Lydgate

Diesel Skoda Octavia. A couple of litres of unleaded. Driven a couple of miles. Switched off now, at The Co-operative Food. That's the enquiry our engineers want, because the real question under it is about volume through your pump rather than hours on the clock.

Here is the whole process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which accounts for the normal Royds Avenue Park call — a diesel Dacia Duster, out there without complaint and back down on power, lumpy at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it bleeds past those clearances instead of building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than your engine was engineered around. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Hardly ever the issue, the location. On-street is the most common location our engineers work, and a cramped parking space is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you call from near Lydgate Chapel, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can park alongside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Peugeot 3008 gets emptied, the fuel filter changed where a workable one exists, the fuel lines cleaned and clean fuel put through the full system — as by now the worst of it is in the lines, not the tank.

A car you collected two days ago gets driven further before anyone notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what decides the quantity of petrol getting to the injectors. Nothing slapdash about the mistake itself: a newer diesel filler neck takes the slimmer petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, and so unfamiliar places see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, by Oliver Heywood Memorial Sunday School or not, and we will head to the Audi A3.

Somebody confident will tell you to drain it then put clean diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel BMW 1 Series close to Wooldale Community Centre and the engine will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here's the problem: there is petrol left in the filter and the feed lines, and the first thing your engine does is draw it back through the pump a second time. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left the tank. Call us. Your circuit gets purged, your filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that's what separates a repaired motor from one that just starts.

Lydgate and the places next to it

As a village, Lydgate has a regular call, and the areas close by go along on the same run: Wooldale and New Mill, Town End and Thongsbridge, Totties.

If yours is not on the list it does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of places in West Yorkshire, and the ones named above are just the immediate neighbours. Near the boundary, or somewhere the satnav can't find? Phone and ask instead of presuming.

That map outlines the ground this page spans. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of it is ground we cover, and none of it asks the vehicle to travel to us.

Lydgate: stuck where you parked

Some drivers find no sensible spot to pull in at all. Set off, then noticed? Finished up along the verge of Bramley Close, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards on? That is a routine call here. Not an unusual one.

Clear of the vehicle when it's not wise to wait in it, beside it when it is. Never fire it up to get to a safer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mixture deeper into the fuel system. A van coming to an inconvenient location is no trouble for us, and it is a lot better for your car than pressing on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

The local Outlane Interchange is the one which matters now, and sits under 10 miles from Lydgate. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power ebbs away, your idle gets lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Pull off at the next safe junction, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to move it. Suppose the worst of that on a long trip. Anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you ring. What we bring changes.

Lydgate itself

Lydgate is a small village in West Yorkshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of around 160 metres. Lydgate lies near the towns of Wooldale and New Mill, and is approximately 13 miles from Wakefield. Lydgate has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly composed of terraced homes. Lydgate is located in a scenic area, with the nearby countryside offering opportunities for outdoor activities.

The call-out around Lydgate, step by step

  • The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.
  • The polluted fuel comes from your tank.
  • Our technicians flush your fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what's left in the fuel system isn't what caused the issue.
  • The system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running smoothly.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Lydgate is a distinct matter

The fault is not the same, though the first step is — don't fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection your fuel system relies on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Lydgate page. Both are ours to handle.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Lydgate?

One price would not be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • This is the key one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much your tank takes.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range. Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel queries from Lydgate drivers

Fuel drains on a Lydgate petrol station forecourt

A good portion of this work happens there, so yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Texaco is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there's possible.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the engine has run matters far more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate issue and it does not replace what petrol has weakened. The pump still has to live with it, as the tank still has petrol in it after that.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, because our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Is your car still with you?

Leave the engine turned off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later on. This is recoverable from far more often than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold car is the best place to be in.
