Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Lyminge?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Lyminge and the rest of Kent. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. When the engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still in your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much got in. We will show you what the following step is. Phone — this comes ahead of all else.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't start it. Fired up regardless? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally will not run, so the motorist stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off fine, for a few miles. Most people get that backwards. It isn't fine — the fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Leave the ignition alone too. Diesel performs two jobs: it combusts, and before it burns it greases your injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is often sufficient to prime the system, which carries the petrol out of that tank and into just those parts.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests — so do not tip diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it is sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Church Road, anywhere — a tricky location for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning CT18 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than turning up.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what was put in, roughly how much, plus if the car has been turned over. Those answers determine all that follows.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

A large portion of the work is finished at the pump, since that's where it mostly begins. We operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's permission, so if you're still at Murco that's normally where this drain happens.

At the forecourt, the mistake gets halted with the motor never started, and no place else does it. We can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and moved there, and that pulled fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to reach past that tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

The staff will usually happily roll it clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. That's worth doing. Shifting it four lengths does not warrant cranking it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Lyminge

Diesel Renault Megane. Some litres of unleaded. Driven a couple of miles. Turned off now, outside Tesco. That is the phone call we hope for, because the point beneath it is about quantity through your pump instead of hours on the clock.

Shift it out of the gateway and sort it out later — that is what a passer-by will say, and it's wrong. Sitting on the zig-zags by Lyminge Church of England Primary School, a misfuelled diesel Peugeot 308 is a hassle and nothing worse. Started three more times for courtesy, it's no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, since priming happens with every start and more petrol goes past the fuel filter towards the pump. Let everyone complain. Ring us.

This is what a job in the car park outside Coach and Horses typically looks like. Our engineers get to the vehicle, ask what went in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since — those three replies determine much of the work. Then the tainted mixture comes out of that tank, your lines get flushed, and the filter comes off where your Ford Focus has a serviceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and your system is bled. Then we fire it up, check it runs correctly, and you drive away.

Three things help when you call from close to St Mary & St. Ethelburga: which side the filler is on, whether our van can stand next to without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual spot our engineers work, so the spot itself is hardly ever the trouble — we'd far rather deal with a tight parking bay than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We will drain your Audi A6, change your filter where there's a usable one, flush the fuel lines and put clean fuel through the full system, because by this point the worst of that is resting in your lines instead of in that tank.

A motor you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anybody sees anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what settles the amount of petrol reaching the fuel injectors. Nothing sloppy about the mistake itself: a current diesel filler neck accepts the slimmer petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so unfamiliar places see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, near Lyminge Methodist Church or not, and we'll get to the Citroen C3.

Do we reach your side of Lyminge?

North Lyminge, Yewtree Cross, Newbarn, Etchinghill, Ottinge — all of these on the rounds that bring us over to Lyminge too, a village.

We do come. Those names above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of places around Kent, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Phone to ask rather than assuming — county lines particularly, and anywhere your phone might get wrong.

That map is the ground this page covers. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of that is territory our technicians serve, and none of it needs the vehicle to come to us.

Stuck at the roadside around Lyminge

A chance to pull in anywhere safe does not come to everybody. A normal call for us instead of a rare one: realised after setting off, finished up by the verge on High Street or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Out of the car if it's not wise to sit in it, with it when it is. Do not restart it to get to a better place. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mix deeper into your fuel system. A technician coming to a difficult place is no bother for us, and it is much better for the car than driving on.

Run it already? Pull in, and check this

The M20 is the one which matters now, and it lies under 3 miles from Lyminge. A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Do not start it to move it. Come off at the first sensible exit then switch off. On a longer run — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you call. It alters what our technicians bring.

All about Lyminge

Lyminge is a village situated in a riverside setting in Kent, with an elevation of 107 metres and a population of around 1598 residents. Lyminge lies near the city of Canterbury, approximately 10.6 miles away, and is also close to nearby places such as North Lyminge and Yewtree Cross. Lyminge has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are the most predominant. Lyminge is located in the South East region of England, about 58.7 miles from London.

Once we arrive with you around Lyminge: what we do

  • The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and whether the motor has run.
  • We clear the tank of the polluted mixture.
  • We flush your fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's left in your system is not what started the trouble.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • The motor is turned on and tested to make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

That has the car ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted quickly, and because everything is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a garage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Lyminge?

Don't fire it up: that first instruction applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and build-up in its place.

AdBlue removal around Lyminge has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Lyminge

One number wouldn't be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there safely?

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Lyminge drivers

At a petrol station in Lyminge, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a big part of this work gets done. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there's possible.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your engine has run counts far more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving is what moves the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is fixable a lot more often than people fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It isn't a modification, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different issue and it doesn't put back what petrol has weakened. Your pump still has to live with it, because that tank still has petrol in it after that.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and your car, still together?

Never switch the car on again.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than people fear.
