Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Maders? Don't Start It
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Maders and the rest of Cornwall. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. When your engine has not turned over and the fuel is still inside that tank, a drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much went in. A single call our way is enough: we shall explain what happens next. Make that right away.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do first
- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for a few miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't start the vehicle. And if started, never depend on it: that fuel system is grinding as you drive.
- Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition remains off as well — switch it on and you commonly prime that system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for just those parts.
- Do not dilute it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
- A car that has never shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and so wait where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Redmoor Road? Hazards on, and keep the car there. An awkward place works for us better than a started engine.
- Know where you are before calling. A postcode that starts PL17 7, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, about how many litres, and whether the car has run. Those three replies decide the whole call-out.
Draining petrol from your diesel at the forecourt
Pumps are where this work often starts, and where a large share of that finishes. If you are still on the forecourt at Tesco, that is typically where this drain takes place — we operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's consent.
Nowhere but a garage can this be stopped with the motor still unstarted. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the keys.
Move the vehicle out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they usually will. The next motorist gets through the pump, and that's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.
Maders and the towns near it
Kelly Bray, Golberdon, Trevigro, Haye Fm, South Hill — all of those on the rounds that take us across to Maders too, a rural hamlet.
Not on this list? That means nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and most towns around Cornwall have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Contact us to enquire rather than assuming, particularly when you are on a border or somewhere your satnav gets wrong.
This map outlines the patch the page includes. All of that is ground our engineers serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never bring your car anywhere.
How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, and so have both ready. The Peugeot 308 will have seemed perfectly ordinary on the way back from Callington Primary School — they all do, and that is the catch. Diesel into a petrol vehicle usually won't run at all: the driver stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel fires up, idles, pulls away like nothing happened, while your high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, because behind the wheel nothing appears wrong.
Do not risk it. The journey home from The Swingletree is perfectly possible, which is precisely the issue — a weakened tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears the parts your fuel is supposed to lubricate. Ring us, and let the Nissan Qashqai stay where it is.
Why we are firm about not driving on: your pump rests ahead of the fuel injectors, so whatever a worn pump loses moves onward with the fuel. Leave the Mercedes E-Class close to South Hill Parish Hall then call us.
Clattering? Ragged idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That is your misfilled BMW 5 Series, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe close to St Sampson, and leave the restarting alone.
By now your tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and that blend goes into the filter, into your lines, into the pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with your tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Astra that made it by Callington Methodist Church needs its circuit cleared. Clearing is not the same thing.
Maders: stranded where you parked
Not everybody has a suitable place to pull in. If you realised after setting off and ended up on the verge beside Launceston Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.
Wait with the car while it is sensible to be in it, and clear of the car if it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. A van coming to an awkward location is no problem for us, and it's far better for the vehicle than carrying on.
So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles
under 50 miles from Maders, the M5 is what matters now. A misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they arrive are usually a loss of power, a rough idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.
Get off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and never restart it to reposition. On a longer run — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you phone. It alters what we bring.
Maders itself
Maders is a small hamlet in inland Cornwall, situated at an elevation of 148 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Maders lies near several other small settlements, including Kelly Bray, Golberdon, and Trevigro, and is approximately 13.4 miles from Plymouth. Maders is a rural community with a population of around 535 people, and is located in the South West region of England, about 195.2 miles from London.
Our job in Maders, step by step
- Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies change what the work really is.
- That tank is cleared of it.
- Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that started the problem.
- We pour new diesel in and prime the system.
- When it's started, our technicians confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.
From that point, you're ready to drive away. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught early, lasting damage is very unusual.
Maders AdBlue removal is a separate problem
The issue is not the same, though the first step is — don't crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol thins the diesel and removes the lubrication the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.
AdBlue removal in Maders has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. Our engineers cover both.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Maders
One price would not be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:
- This is the key one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much that tank can hold.
- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Whether our van can safely reach your car and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.
The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.

Fuel drains on a Maders petrol station forecourt
Plenty of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Our technicians work at Gulf and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the site's permission — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.
Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?
Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that mix has been sucked through the fuel system.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?
Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. It's salvageable much more commonly than people assume, even though driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
No. Carried out properly, emptying and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. The pump still has to put up with it, as the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.
Waiting next to it?
Leave the car shut off.
Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the vehicle stay that way. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
