Petrol in Diesel

Maidenhall: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, all over Maidenhall and the remainder of Suffolk. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When your engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much got in. Phone before anything else starts, so you will learn what follows next.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • As you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear down. This is why you don't start the car, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point most people get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine typically will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Leave your ignition alone also. Diesel has two roles: it combusts, and before it combusts it protects your high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is usually all it takes to prime the system, which pulls that petrol out of your tank then into just those parts.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Maidenhall Green? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. A difficult location works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Before you ring, work out your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting IP2 8 — that is what settles whether the technician arrives or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what went in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has been turned over. Those answers settle everything that happens next.

Quarter past eight. A rushed fill-up on the way in. Somewhere around eleven it occurs to you, and by then the diesel Renault Clio has stood outside Ipswich for three hours. Phone and keep it where it stands. What matters is the run in, since diesel both combusts and — before that — greases your pump and the fuel injectors, but petrol only ever ignites. Those few miles worked your pump on a fluid drained of much of its protection, and no amount of standing in a car park adds any of it back. Hence the question about mileage instead of hours sitting, and hence the advice to leave your keys where they are until we arrive.

Park it there overnight. Call us first thing. Nothing about a diesel Audi A4 standing in the parking area at The Smock degrades whilst it waits, tank of petrol or not, and the job stays a straightforward one right up until the moment it gets driven home. The query we arrive with is about that drive there: a cold motor over a short run is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can get past the piston rings into the sump.

Out there fine, back gutless. If that was the drive to Maidenhall Green, look at the tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the tight clearances meant to build injection pressure — so every further mile your diesel Mercedes C-Class covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, turn off, call us.

Clearing your Dacia Duster, changing your filter where there is a serviceable one, flushing your lines, putting clean fuel through the entire system: that's the job, and it's shaped by the worst of it sitting in the fuel lines instead of in that tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from near Maidenhall Residents Association and Community Shop — which side the filler is on, whether our van can stand alongside without blocking the road, and whether your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest place our engineers work, and so the place itself is seldom the issue. A cramped parking bay trumps a car driven somewhere more handy.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind your car — some agreements demand it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, phone us about your diesel Citroen C3 close to Richard Rapier Stokes. You'll not know how full that tank was. Scarcely anyone does, two days into a vehicle, and it gets worked out on site regardless. Our technicians ask because the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger blend than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is designed to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.

Can petrol be pumped from a diesel at a forecourt?

A good part of this job is done at a pump, because that is where it mostly begins. Still at Asda? Then that's generally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the site.

Before the motor has fired — a forecourt is the one place the mistake ends up halted. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and your lines together with that tank. That is still not a disaster, and our technicians deal with it where the car sits. What decides it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

The attendants will generally help you wheel the vehicle away from the pump so the next customer can get past. That is worth doing. Shifting the car four lengths does not justify starting the motor.

Maidenhall and the places near it

Being a residential suburb, Maidenhall has a frequent visit, and the places round about come along on the same trip: Stoke and Stoke Park, Greenwich and Chantry, Ipswich.

There are dedicated pages for most towns in Suffolk, and the ones listed above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off the list says nothing whatsoever about if we come. Contact us to ask rather than presuming, particularly where you're on a border or anywhere your satnav gets wrong.

The map is the ground the page includes. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of that is ground our technicians work on, and none of it requires the vehicle to come to us.

Maidenhall: stuck where you stopped

Not everybody has a decent place to pull over. Set off, then twigged? Ended up by the verge beside Conway Close, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Out of the car if it isn't wise to be inside, with it if it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: start it up to reach somewhere better and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. We'll take the van to an awkward location without any fuss, and for your car that is far better than driving on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

Your M11 is the road which counts here, and runs under 50 miles from Maidenhall. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power drains away, your idle goes uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Pull off at the next safe exit, turn off, and never start the vehicle to move it. It alters what we bring, and so say so when you ring: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

Where is Maidenhall?

Maidenhall is a suburban area in Suffolk, situated near the coast and approximately 21 metres above sea level. Maidenhall lies within commuting distance of Colchester and is also within reach of London, being around 65 miles from the capital. Maidenhall has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are particularly prevalent in the area. Maidenhall is close to other nearby places such as Stoke and Stoke Park.

What our technicians do when our technicians get to you around Maidenhall

  • Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • We drain your tank of all the contaminated fuel.
  • What is left in the fuel system should not be what started the trouble, so your fuel lines get purged and your filter cleared.
  • The system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • The motor is fired up and checked to make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

That has the car ready to set off. There's no need for a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Maidenhall AdBlue removal is a separate job

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is the same — never crank it — yet the fault is not. The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and residue.

AdBlue removal in Maidenhall has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. Our technicians handle both.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Maidenhall

What shifts the price is listed below, as this job is not one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single figure on this page.

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much that tank takes.
  • Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Maidenhall

Fuel drains on a Maidenhall petrol station forecourt

A big portion of this work happens there, so yes. We visit Harvest Energy and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether we can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then leave the car off. It is recoverable much more regularly than drivers fear, even though driving is what shifts the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. The pump still has to live with it, as your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

No. Our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

Is your car still with you?

Don't switch your engine back on.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off and keep it off. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than drivers expect.
