Petrol in a Diesel Car in Malleny Mills

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Malleny Mills and the rest of City of Edinburgh. The very first thing to do is not to start your engine. When the engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still inside the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Call us and then we shall explain what comes from here before you do much else.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't start the vehicle — and don't believe it when it runs. That is the part drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel generally just will not run, so the person stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, idles and drives off perfectly well for a few miles. It's not all right. It is wearing out that fuel system while you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off also — flick it on and you often prime that system, and that is petrol leaving your tank for precisely those parts.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay put if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Harlaw March, anywhere — a difficult spot for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a motor that never shifted.
  • Before you ring, have your location. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning EH14 7 — that is what settles whether our van arrives or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three queries — what got in, roughly how much, and if the engine has been started. The replies decide whatever comes after.

Don't run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through your injection pump in real volume on the trip in, and the trip back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is good. There is no need to stand over your Volkswagen Golf outside Curriehill whilst the work happens, and we would far rather hear from you tonight than realise on Monday.

Risk the trip home from The Balerno Inn? Don't. It will fire up and it will drive off perfectly well, which is the issue — a diesel on a weakened tank acts typically while grinding the parts your fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Peugeot 308 and phone us.

The pump waits before the fuel injectors, so whatever a worn one loses moves onward with your fuel — which is why we are blunt about not driving on. Call us, then leave the diesel Kia Sportage where it's by Balerno Community Centre.

Switch off where you have stopped, and never start it to find somewhere better — near Balerno Farmer's Market or anywhere at all. Clattering, a ragged idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel Mercedes GLC telling you what is wrong.

It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went dead, the idle turned lumpy, and your diesel Citroen C4 is now resting near St Mungo's Episcopal Church. That deadness is your fuel failing to build pressure correctly rather than your engine failing — and since there's no warning for it, motors in that position generally get driven once more before anybody phones. Do not. Switch it off then phone us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Malleny Mills

Draining petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

It starts at a forecourt, mostly. Quite often it ends on site as well. We operate on station forecourts routinely, with the site's consent, and so if you are still at Sainsbury's that is usually where this drain takes place.

Nowhere else but the forecourt can the mistake be stopped with the engine still cold. Fuel drawn out of your tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is started and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and your lines as well as the tank. That is still not a disaster, and our technicians put it right where your car stands. What settles it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Move the car out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets past the pump, and that is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

Service around Malleny Mills

The same trips carry us to Balerno, Gowanhill, Glenbrook, Currie and Warriston as well as Malleny Mills, which is a residential suburb.

We do come. The names above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for most towns around City of Edinburgh, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Near a border, or anywhere your satnav struggles with? Contact us to check instead of presuming.

This map is the patch this page covers. The lot is ground our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never drive your vehicle anywhere.

Roadside stops in Malleny Mills

Not everybody has a suitable spot to pull in. A routine call for us and not a rare one: realised after setting off, landed on the verge beside Harlaw Road or in a lay-by with your hazards on.

Sit beside the motor when it is safe to sit in it, but out of the car when it is not. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere safer and the blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered. We will take the van to an awkward place without any fuss, and for your car that's far better than driving on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where your M8 counts, under 3 miles away from Malleny Mills. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power ebbs away, the idle goes uneven, and there may be some smoke.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you call. It affects what our engineers bring.

What happens when we get to you around Malleny Mills

  • Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Away goes the tainted fuel.
  • What is left in the system shouldn't be what created the trouble, so the lines get purged and the fuel filter cleared.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • The motor is started and tested to confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to set off. Our technicians do all of it wherever the vehicle has stopped, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, it's very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

Malleny Mills AdBlue removal is a different problem

The fault isn't the same, though the first rule is — never fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The protection a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Malleny Mills page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Malleny Mills

What changes the figure is set out below, as this job isn't one job and we cannot honestly put a single price on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Malleny Mills

At a petrol station in Malleny Mills, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair portion of this happens. Regularly, provided the site agrees: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something our technicians answer there and then.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. What settles how much work is required is whether that mix has been drawn through the system — because though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable far more regularly than drivers expect.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It isn't an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

Waiting next to it?

Keep the engine switched off.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off and keep it off. This is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists assume, and a parked, cold motor is the best place to be in.

Throughout City of Edinburgh and in Malleny Mills: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
