Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Mannings Heath? Don't Start It

If you have not started the motor as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor needs while the fuel is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not run, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has ended up in Mannings Heath or the rest of Dorset, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Call us and our team shall tell you what happens from here before you try any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Never start the car — and do not trust it if it fires up. This is the thing most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel normally just can't run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, ticks over and drives away perfectly well for a couple of miles. It isn't all right. It is wearing out your fuel system as you drive.
  • Switching the car's ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition off.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Stay still if it is safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Ling Road, anywhere — an awkward place for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a car that never moved.
  • Get your whereabouts ready before you phone. A postcode starting BH12 4 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between our van arriving and a van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, approximately how much, and also if the engine has started. These three replies settle the full job.

On a forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

Pumps are where the job often begins, and where a large portion of it ends. The drain typically takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Tesco? Given the site's consent, that's somewhere we work, and often.

At a forecourt, the mistake is halted with the motor never started, and nowhere else manages it. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for your key determine how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and the filter require flushing as well as that tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where the car stands.

Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you move it. Very much worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

We'll head your way, empty the tank, purge those fuel lines then put clean diesel in so you can drive away. So if petrol went into the diesel Renault Megane around Mannings Heath and you are stranded outside The Food Warehouse with a boot loaded with shopping, phone — and do not crank it again to exit the spot. A mile or so at gentle throttle pulls hardly any of it, which is why those are often the easy ones.

Three replies determine most of the work: what was put in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for those answers as soon as we get to the vehicle in the car park at The Pilot. After that the polluted mix comes out of the tank, the fuel lines are flushed, and where your BMW 3 Series has a serviceable filter, it comes off. After new diesel is in and your system primed, our technicians start the engine and check it runs properly before you drive away.

Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off and call us. Normal on the way out to Haskells Recreation Ground, sluggish on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol thins diesel; weaker fuel leaks past the tightly fitted components that build injection pressure; and the farther the diesel Peugeot 308 travelled, the less of that pressure it held.

The pump rests before the injectors, and so whatever a worn one loses passes downstream with your fuel — which is why we are blunt about not driving on. Ring us, then leave your diesel Ford Focus where it is near Vue Poole.

By this point the tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in the fuel filter, your lines, your pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Mercedes A-Class that got close to Splashdown Water Park needs the system flushed, not cleared.

Areas our vans serve around Mannings Heath

Mannings Heath is a residential suburb, and we head out to it and to the places by it on the usual journeys: Newtown, Canford Heath, Alderney, Foxholes and Nuffield.

If yours isn't on this list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are pages for the majority of locations in Dorset, and the ones named above are just the immediate neighbours. Phone to check instead of guessing — borders particularly, and anywhere the satnav might get wrong.

That map shows the ground the page covers. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is ground we serve, and none of it asks your vehicle to travel to us.

Broken down by the roadside around Mannings Heath

The chance to pull in anywhere safe doesn't come to everyone. A normal call for us rather than an unusual one: noticed after setting off, ended up by the verge beside Dorset Way or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Fine there? Stay beside it. Not safe? Climb out and clear of it. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the catch: start it up to get to somewhere better and the mix goes further into the system with every mile travelled. However awkward the location, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that's far better for the car than carrying on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

under 25 miles out of Mannings Heath, the local M27 is what matters here. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the first junction that is sensible, stop there, and do not start it to move it. On a longer run — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors, and tell us when you phone. It changes what we bring.

What happens when we arrive with you in Mannings Heath

  • Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Your tank gets cleared of it.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what created the issue, so your fuel lines get purged and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • The system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • Our technicians start it and make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

That has your car ready to drive away. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been noticed soon, and since everything is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

Mannings Heath AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

The fault is not the same, though the opening rule is — don't crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the protection the system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and residue.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Mannings Heath page. Both are ours to deal with.

Mannings Heath costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One price would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much that tank holds.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Mannings Heath drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt in Mannings Heath. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's agreement our engineers work at Esso and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not a modification, so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to remain off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct fault and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to put up with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Turned off is how it remains.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
