Petrol in Diesel

Manor House: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't turn on your engine. If the petrol is still inside that tank and the motor has not yet run, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is decided in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, across Manor House and the remainder of West Midlands, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Contact us and then we will show you what follows after that before you do any more.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Whenever you drive, your pump and the injectors suffer. That is why you don't fire it up, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the point most people get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally can't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the ignition is left off as well — turn it on and you often prime the system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for exactly those components.
  • Don't thin it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Our team would sooner travel to an odd place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to handle than a car that has not moved. On the verge on Hillmorton Road, that means hazards on and leave the car.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode beginning CV2 1, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.
  • What got in, approximately how many litres, plus if the engine has fired — these three facts settle the whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

At the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

The job kicks off at the pump, generally. Frequently it wraps up at one as well. The drain typically takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station? Given the site's permission, that's somewhere we work, and routinely.

The forecourt is the single location the mistake is stopped before your engine has fired. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for your key settle how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where your car is.

Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get by. Accept the help. Starting the car just to shift four car lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Manor House

Each start primes that fuel system and pulls more of that mixture out of the tank and on to your pump — which is why a car moved twice into a better space has quietly become a harder job than one left just where it stopped. So when we cannot work beside your diesel Renault Megane, our technicians roll the vehicle without firing it. None of that is fussiness about a handful of seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Lido Extra our technicians attend frequently, and your fuel is seldom the awkward part: that bay is. Motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height bar at the way in determining if a van can reach you at all. Tell us how penned in you are, and which way the vehicle points.

Every restart primes your lines and draws more petrol through the fuel filter then into the pump. So a wrongly fuelled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags by Alderman's Green Primary School is an inconvenience, while the same vehicle started three more times to be polite is a fuel system rather than a tank. A passer-by will tell you to move it out of that gateway and sort it out later. Don't. Leave it there, let everyone grumble, and phone us.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the tightly fitted components that are meant to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel Ford Focus travelled, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and gutless on the way back is how the run to River Sowe floodplain parkland went, then, and that tank is where to look. Pull in somewhere safe, switch off and phone us.

Knocking? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone dead? That is your wrongly fuelled BMW 1 Series, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe by Aldermans Green Menthodist Church, and leave the restarting alone.

It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went dead, your idle turned lumpy, and your diesel Vauxhall Astra is now resting near Bell Green Library. That sluggishness is the fuel failing to build pressure properly not your engine giving up — and as there's no warning for it, motors in that position typically get driven once more before anyone calls. Do not. Turn it off and ring us.

Service around Manor House

These same journeys bring us to Wood End, Hall Green, Aldermans Green, Bell Green and Potters Green as well as Manor House, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The names above are only the closest few, and nearly all places across West Midlands have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Ring us to enquire instead of assuming — boundaries particularly, and anywhere your satnav can struggle with.

The map shows the area this page spans. Every bit of it is ground our technicians work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never drive your vehicle anywhere.

Manor House: stuck wherever you pulled up

Some people get no safe spot to pull in whatsoever. If you realised after setting off and ended up by the verge of Palm Tree Avenue, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a common call for us and not an odd one.

Stay with the motor if it's wise to sit in it, yet clear of the car if it's not. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the catch: start it up to get to somewhere safer and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. Our van heading to a tricky spot is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for the car than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has gone

under a mile out of Manor House, the M6 is what counts here. A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next exit that is safe, pull up there, and do not start it to move it. It affects what our engineers bring, and so tell us when you call: on a longer trip — anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

Manor House itself

Manor House is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Coventry, near the River Sowe, with a mix of semi-detached housing and local amenities. Manor House sits at an elevation of 87 metres, close to nearby places such as Wood End and Hall Green. Manor House is situated approximately 2.8 miles from Coventry city centre, making it a convenient residential location. Manor House has a population of around 8315 people, living in a range of semi-detached homes.

Our call-out in Manor House, step by step

  • The replies shape the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what got in, how much of it, and whether your engine has run.
  • The tainted mixture comes out of the tank.
  • What is remaining in the system should not be what started the issue, and so the fuel lines get purged and your filter cleared.
  • Our engineers pour clean diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • Your engine is started and tested to confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been caught early, long-term damage is very rare.

Manor House AdBlue removal is a separate job

The fault is not the same, though the opening instruction is — do not fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Manor House page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Manor House

One figure would not be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and whether our van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. If it's not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Manor House drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Manor House petrol station forecourt

Much of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's agreement our engineers attend Gulf and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that blend pulled through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then keep the vehicle off. Driving takes the issue along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you is not restarting the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to bring it to a main dealer, since we drain and flush your car wherever it is.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

That engine stays off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off then leave it off. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.
