Petrol in a Diesel Car in Marchwood: What Happens Now

Whatever you do, never switch the motor on, even for a moment, to shift the vehicle. Stop; leave the car off. Petrol in a diesel that has not been run is generally a simple drain plus a flush, done where the car sits, and what you do in the next few minutes settles that far more than anything else. Here's the order of things from now, anywhere you're in Marchwood.

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

Before anything else, the following — in this sequence.

  • The ignition off, keys out. Switched on, your ignition can prime your system — and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank into the components it damages.
  • Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You end up with a bigger tank of the same mixture.
  • Hazards on. If you are at all near moving traffic, make your car simple to see before you do anything else.
  • By hand, not under your engine: that is how it leaves the petrol pump. Get the forecourt staff to help you push, whatever the mileage.
  • Hold on to your receipt. It says which fuel was put in plus about how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.

On the M271, under 3 miles from Marchwood, the next exit is the location to come off; anywhere, the first safe place to stop. Don't push on to the services. Then go back to step one.

Each Marchwood fuel drain starts here: has your motor run?

What happens next turns on one answer, and only one.

If it has not once been started:

  • No place but your tank: that's where the petrol yet is.
  • A drain and flush, on the spot, is usually the whole job.
  • No place is better, and it's why the first stage counts so much.

If it's been started, even for a second:

  • Some petrol has left the tank by now, gone through the filter, and got into your lines.
  • Run it farther and the petrol reaches the injectors, having gone through your pump first.
  • Distance is what makes it a bigger job: flushed lines, a filter seen to, and at times further work.

That line falls there because diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors on its way through them — and petrol does not. A tank of petrol, left alone, hurts nothing. As soon as it's pumped, petrol begins wearing whatever moves it.

Marchwood, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

Prepare a little, and the technician finds you instead of circling.

  • Where you have stopped. A postcode starting SO40 4 is the best start.
  • Wherever you have parked, the road's name is useful — whether that's Main Road or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.
  • Or the landmark. A car park is quicker to find by what it serves, like the one at Aldi.
  • Make and model of the car, and the fact it is a diesel.
  • What was put in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Marchwood, so tell us which.
  • How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on your receipt — either tells us how much.
  • The miles it covered, and how hard, if it has run at all.
  • Whose motor it is. Some hire or company agreements want the owner to authorise this work, and that's quicker settled before we get there than after.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then. Writing to is fine as well if it can wait, with the vehicle left at home, going nowhere.

Whilst you wait for a fuel drain around Marchwood

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the damage whilst you wait. So hold to these.

  • Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself clear of the traffic then wait away from it. If it is safe where it stands, wait with it.
  • No one — however helpful — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to move the car a short way.
  • No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, something from the boot — none of it gets the petrol back out.
  • Clearing it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond your tank remains where it is anyway.
  • Even your radio or the windows aren't worth switching your ignition on for.

When our van gets there: your fuel drain, step by step

  • Our quote comes after three queries, not before them — what was put in, how much, and whether it's run — because the answers decide this job.
  • Out of your tank comes the tainted blend: the tank is drained.
  • The lines are purged. If it ran, that petrol has moved beyond the tank, and the lines are carrying it.
  • Then the fuel filter: replaced where there's a serviceable one, cleared where there is not.
  • Bleeding your system comes after clean diesel is in.
  • We fire it up only after fresh diesel has gone in and primed your system, then check that it's running smoothly.

Until it runs on clean diesel, we stay with it. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed quickly, so your car can go straight back to normal driving.

After your fuel drain is done: driving in Marchwood a second time

  • After it has been started on clean fuel, there is nothing special to do: drive normally.
  • Pull over and ring us back if anything seems wrong early on — a light on your dash, smoke from the exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.
  • Hold on to your paperwork. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was carried out.
  • The handle's colour is not the guide to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
