Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Margam? Don't Start It
If you have not fired up the motor yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a motor requires while the fuel is still in that tank and the motor has not been started, which is why it's the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has ended up in Margam or the remainder of Neath Port Talbot, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. Our engineers will tell you what the following stage is. Contact us — it comes ahead of anything else.
What to try first about petrol in a diesel
- Don't crank it — and never trust it if it does start. Here is the thing motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel normally just won't run, so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol typically starts, idles and moves off perfectly well for several miles. It isn't fine. It's wearing out the fuel system whenever you drive.
- Leave the ignition alone also. Diesel performs two jobs: it combusts, and before it burns it lubricates your injection pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is often sufficient to prime the system, which carries that petrol out of that tank and into just those components.
- Never add diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it only leaves you a fuller tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- We'd much rather travel to a difficult place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to handle than a car that has never moved. On the verge on Wern Road, that means hazards on then keep it.
- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode starting SA13 2, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of arriving.
- What went in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the engine has run — the three facts shape the entire visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
Phone before you collect it. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Golf this morning, and the vehicle outside Port Talbot Parkway ever since? Then the afternoon has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is harmless, and any harm happened on the journey in, when the pump was drawing diesel that petrol had weakened.
We are in car parks like the one at Aldi all the time, and it's almost never the fuel that complicates them. It is that bay. Cars both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height bar at the entrance, which determines whether a van gets to you at all. So say how penned in you are when you phone, and which way the vehicle is pointing. If there's no room to work alongside that Renault Megane, our technicians move it without the motor. That isn't fuss over a couple of seconds: starts prime things, blend comes out of that tank towards your pump, and a car moved twice for a roomier bay is gradually a harder job than one no one touched.
Straightforward job, this one — till someone drives it home. A diesel Ford Focus left by The Twelve Knights with petrol in your tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, and so park the vehicle then ring us once it is light. Expect a query about that drive there, though. Brief and cold is exactly where petrol struggles to burn, and what will not burn can work past the piston rings and into the sump.
Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left by St David's. For a diesel Mercedes E-Class whose motor has turned, that is about the best version there is. Call us, then let it stand with the ignition alone. Short helps, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the lines get purged and not just your tank drained.
The slimmer petrol nozzle fits a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical instead of careless. Unfamiliar places see most of that for that reason. So: filled up by Margam Community Hall without thinking, in a diesel BMW 5 Series you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody realises, and distance settles how much petrol reaches the injectors.
Draining petrol from the diesel at the forecourt
Forecourts are where this work mostly kicks off, and where a big portion of it closes. The drain usually takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station? Given the site's permission, that's somewhere our technicians work, and routinely.
At a garage, it is halted with the motor never run, and no place else does it. The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for your key settle how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where the vehicle is.
Roll the vehicle out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they normally will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Starting the car just to move four vehicle lengths is not.
Service around Margam
Being a residential suburb, Margam has a frequent call, whilst the areas close by come along on the same run: Brombil and Taibach, Goytre and Pen-y-cae, Cwrt-y-defaid.
Not on the list? That means nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and nearly all places across Neath Port Talbot have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Near the boundary, or anywhere a satnav gets wrong? Phone to ask instead of guessing.
This map shows the area the page covers. We operate by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and the car never needs to travel to us.
Stranded by the kerbside anywhere in Margam?
Some people have no safe spot to stop at all. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up on the verge on Ty Fry Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that's a routine call for us rather than a rare one.
Stay by the motor if it is sensible to sit there, and out of the car when it is not. Don't fire it up to reach a better spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into the system. Carrying on causes the car far more harm than a van heading out to a tricky place, and that is no problem for us.
A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?
The local M4 is the road which counts now, and sits under a mile from Margam. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power ebbs away, your idle turns rough, and there may be some smoke.
Take the next exit that is sensible, stop there, and do not restart the car to reposition. Long run? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in our van.
A little about Margam
Margam is a suburban area in Neath Port Talbot, situated near the coast of south Wales, with Brombil, Taibach, and Goytre nearby. Margam has a relatively low elevation of around 10 metres above sea level and is located approximately 8.6 miles from Swansea. Margam is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, which reflects the area's residential nature. Margam is also part of the wider commuter belt around Swansea, with easy access to the city,
Our job in Margam, step by step
- The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and whether the motor has run.
- Away comes the polluted mixture.
- We rinse your fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what is left in the fuel system is not what started the problem.
- Your system gets bled, on new diesel.
- When it's fired up, our engineers confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.
That leaves it ready to drive away. Our engineers do all of this wherever the car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been noticed early, it's very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.
A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Margam
If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is the same — never start the car — yet this issue is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the protection the system depends on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Margam page. Both are ours to deal with.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Margam
What moves the price is listed below, because the job is not one job and our technicians cannot honestly put a single price on this page.
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for our van.
A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.
Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Margam
I am on a forecourt around Margam. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?
Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. We attend Tesco and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the site's permission — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend pulled through it.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?
Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. It is salvageable much more commonly than people fear, even though driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
It's not a change, and so a drain and flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Later? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.
You, and the vehicle, still together?
Turned off is how the car stays.
If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off and keep it off. This is recoverable from much more frequently than people expect, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
