Marine Court: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, don't switch the engine on, even briefly, to move the car. Stop; leave the car off. Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is normally a drain and a flush, done where your vehicle sits, and what you do in the coming few minutes decides that more than anything else. Anywhere you are in Marine Court, here is how things go from here.

Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one

In this order, all before anything else:

  • Priming your fuel system draws petrol from your tank towards the components it damages, and switching your ignition on can be all it takes to do that. So the keys come out, and the ignition remains off altogether.
  • Topping up with diesel sounds like it dilutes the trouble. It doesn't: nothing gets out, and your tank just carries more of the same.
  • Get the car simple to see first — hazards on — if there is moving traffic anywhere close to you.
  • Off the pump by hand. On a forecourt, ask the staff to help you push it away from the pump. Do not crank it to move it, however short the way.
  • Which fuel, and roughly how much? The receipt answers both, and that's where our questions start. Never throw it away.

On the M8, under 50 miles from Marine Court, the next junction is the spot to come off; anywhere, the first sensible spot to stop. Don't push on to the services. Then go back to step one.

Every Marine Court fuel drain starts here: has your motor run?

One answer is what everything after this point depends on.

If it has never been started:

  • All the petrol remains inside the tank, and only there.
  • The work is a drain and a flush, usually done where the car is.
  • This is the best case — which is the entire point of stage one.

Engine run, even briefly?

  • Petrol has been pulled from the tank, past the fuel filter and into the lines.
  • A longer run carries it right through to your high-pressure pump and the injectors.
  • The job expands with the mileage — lines flushed, filter sorted, sometimes more.

Diesel keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors oiled as it goes through them. Petrol offers them nothing, and that's why the line is drawn there. In the tank, left alone, petrol does no harm. Once it's pumped, petrol begins grinding whatever moves it.

Fuel drain of a diesel car in Marine Court, step by step

Before you call about petrol in a diesel in Marine Court: what our engineers need

Get ready a little, and the technician finds you instead of circling.

  • EH42 1 plus the rest of the postcode is the best way to start telling us where you are.
  • A road name is a help: Bayswell Park, say, or whichever street you have stopped in. A car park does the trick too.
  • Car parks are located more easily by what they serve: say the one outside The Co-operative Food, and it's simple.
  • Tell us what your vehicle is — make, model — and check it's diesel.
  • Which went in matters: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, plus Marine Court has a page just for that. So tell us.
  • How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from the receipt — either gives us how much.
  • Has it run? If so, say how far it went, and the way it was driven.
  • Hire or company car? Some agreements want the owner's authorisation for the work, and sorting it before we arrive is faster than after.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then. Writing to works too if it can wait, with the vehicle parked at home, going nowhere.

The wait for a Marine Court fuel drain, and what to do in it

In the wait, the harm comes from well-intended help — which is why these count.

  • Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself clear of the traffic then wait away from it. If it's safe where it stands, stay with it.
  • No one starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll it a couple of yards.
  • Anything from your boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes that petrol.
  • No home-made draining. Siphoning petrol into a can by the roadside is dangerous, and it leaves the fuel that has by now gone beyond your tank.
  • Leave the ignition off — your windows and your radio too.

Step by step: your fuel drain when our van gets there

  • Fuel, quantity, whether it's run: the answers decide this job, and that is why we give a quote after them rather than before.
  • Out of the tank comes the polluted mix: the tank is emptied.
  • If it ran, the lines are holding petrol that has shifted beyond that tank — so they're purged.
  • Cleaned, or changed if the vehicle has a serviceable one: the fuel filter is dealt with next.
  • Clean diesel in, and the fuel system primed.
  • The start-up. With fresh diesel in and your system bled, it's started and checked to be sure it runs properly.

We remain until it's running on fresh diesel. The car goes back to normal driving right away, and long-term damage is very rare if it has been caught quickly.

Back on the road around Marine Court after your fuel drain

  • Started on new diesel, it needs nothing unusual of you. Simply drive normally.
  • The first miles are the test. A warning lamp, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a flat throttle is your cue to stop then ring us again.
  • An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was carried out, and so hold on to your paperwork.
  • The handle's colour isn't the thing to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
