Petrol in Diesel

Marle Hill: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still holding the petrol and your engine not yet turned over, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is decided in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that got in. Throughout Marle Hill and the remainder of Gloucestershire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Our engineers will explain what the following step is. Call us — it happens ahead of all else.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't start it — and don't rely on it when it does start. This is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just can't run, and so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives away quite happily for a few miles. It's not okay. It's wearing your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the car's ignition stays off also — switch it on and you usually prime the system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for just those components.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Our team would rather drive to a tricky place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Paddocks Lane, that means hazards on and keep it.
  • Get your whereabouts prepared before you phone. A postcode that starts GL50 4 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van turning up and our van circling.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what was put in, roughly how many litres, plus if the car has been started. The answers determine all that follows.

Tonight, please, not Monday. Driving it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has pushed real quantity through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return trip would close to double the figure to no purpose. The BMW 3 Series can stay outside Cheltenham Spa perfectly well. Phone from the platform if easier; standing over us whilst we work is not needed.

We are in car parks like the one outside Lidl often, and it's rarely the fuel that complicates them. It is the bay. Cars both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height bar at the way in, which settles if our van can reach you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you ring, and which way the vehicle is facing. If there is no room to work beside that Peugeot 308, our engineers shift it without the engine. That isn't fuss over a couple of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of your tank toward the pump, and a vehicle shuffled twice for a nicer bay is quietly a harder job than one nobody touched.

Each restart primes the lines and draws more petrol through the fuel filter then into your pump. So a misfuelled diesel Audi A4 on the zig-zags by Dunalley Primary School is a nuisance, while the same vehicle fired up three more times to be helpful is a fuel system and not a tank. A passer-by will tell you to shift it out of that gateway and fix it later. Please don't. Leave it, let everyone complain, and give us a call.

None of that is the engine failing. That's the part worth hearing, and it's why the usual Pittville Park Pitch & Putt call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Ford Kuga drives out there without fuss, comes back with the power gone, your idle lumpy and possibly a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting parts it runs through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built leaks past tolerances, delivery turns up poorer and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once the fuel is sorted.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle soft, idle uneven, and the diesel Vauxhall Insignia is parked up close to Leisure @ Cheltenham. Your engine is not packing up — that sluggishness is fuel that won't build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so vehicles like yours generally get driven again before anybody picks up the phone. Don't. Off, and phone us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Marle Hill

Can petrol be drained from your diesel at the forecourt?

Forecourts are where this job mostly starts, and where a big part of it finishes. If you are still on the forecourt at Tesco, that's generally where the drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent.

No place but the forecourt can it be stopped with your motor still untouched. The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key settle how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where the car sits.

Attendants will generally chip in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get by. Accept the offer. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

Service in Marle Hill

These same rounds bring us to Wymans Brook, St Pauls, Pittville, St Peters and Cleevemount along with Marle Hill, which is a residential suburb.

Not on the list? That means nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and nearly all locations in Gloucestershire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Call us and ask instead of assuming, especially if you're on the border or anywhere a satnav misreads.

That map is the patch the page spans. The vehicle doesn't need to come to us. We work across all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded by the kerbside somewhere around Marle Hill?

Some people have no sensible spot to pull over whatsoever. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up along the verge beside Cleevelands Avenue, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a normal call for us rather than an odd one.

Stay beside the vehicle if it is safe to sit inside, but out of the car if it isn't. Do not restart the engine to limp it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the blend further into the system. We'll send the van to an inconvenient place without any trouble, and for the vehicle that's far better than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Here is where your M5 matters, under 3 miles out of Marle Hill. A drop in power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Come off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to reposition. Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Say so when you phone. What our technicians bring changes.

When our engineers reach you in Marle Hill: what follows

  • Our technicians find out what got in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
  • We drain your tank of the contaminated mixture.
  • Our engineers purge the fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, so what's left in the fuel system isn't what created the problem.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • It's started with new diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running correctly.

After that it is ready to drive away. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it's noticed soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Marle Hill

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is the same — don't crank it — but this problem isn't. The protection a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Marle Hill page. Both are ours to deal with.

Marle Hill prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One figure wouldn't be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • This is the main one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can safely reach the car and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

Things we hear about petrol in diesel in Marle Hill

At a petrol station around Marle Hill, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this takes place. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there's possible.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that blend has been sucked through the fuel system.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep the vehicle off. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

Still with the car?

Shut off is the way the car stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car after that. This is recoverable from far more regularly than motorists expect, and a still, cold car is the best place to be in.
