Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Marsh? Don't Start It
If you have not started your engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a car needs while the fuel is still in your tank and the motor has not yet run, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Marsh or the rest of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. We can show you what your next part is. Phone — it goes before all else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try now
- Do not start the car — and don't depend on it if it starts. That is the part drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel normally just will not run, and so the person stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, ticks over and pulls away perfectly well for several miles. It is not okay. It is grinding your fuel system as you drive.
- Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it greases — the injection pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition be as well: turning it on is often all it takes to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into just those parts.
- Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so do not put diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Stay still if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Hoyle Syke Lane, anywhere — a difficult location for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to sort than a car that never shifted.
- Before you ring, work out your location. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting BD22 9 — that's what settles whether the van arrives or circles.
- Three replies settle the whole call-out: the liquid you tipped in, the rough volume involved, plus whether it has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.
Phone us before you collect the vehicle. Petrol into a diesel Renault Clio this morning, and it outside Keighley ever since? Then the afternoon has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is inert, and any damage was done on the journey in, when the pump was taking diesel that petrol had weakened.
The parts that should be getting oiled are wearing instead, and your car gives no sign of it: a diesel on a weakened tank fires up and drives off just fine. Chance the drive home from The Bay Horse? No. Ring us and leave the Audi A4 where it sits.
Why we're blunt about not driving on: your pump rests before the injectors, and so whatever a worn-out pump gives off travels downstream with your fuel. Leave the Mercedes C-Class close to Marsh Methodist Church then phone us.
Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some agreements want the firm to sign off the work, and that's much faster dealt with up front than later on. Then give us a call about the BMW 5 Series, the diesel one, close to Engine Shed. Do not worry that you can't say how full your tank was — almost no one can two days into a car, and it's something our technicians establish on the spot. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of proportion. A couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mix, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.
Someone sure of themselves will tell you to drain the vehicle and put new diesel in. Only half right, that. Try it on a diesel Volkswagen Touran near Oxenhope Community Centre and the motor will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here is the trouble: there is petrol left in your filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is draw it back through the pump again. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Phone us. The system gets rinsed, the filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that's what separates a fixed vehicle from one that just starts.
Can petrol be drained out of your diesel at a forecourt?
The work begins at the pump, typically. Often enough the job ends at one as well. The drain generally gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the station's consent, that's somewhere we work, and routinely.
Nowhere else but the forecourt can the mistake be caught with the motor still cold. Fuel drawn out of your tank and through your filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is fired up and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and the lines as well as the tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and we sort it out where the car stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.
Move the vehicle out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they normally will. The next motorist gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Firing the car for four vehicle lengths? Never.
Can our engineers reach your end of Marsh?
Marsh is a residential suburb, and our technicians are out to it and to the areas near it on those same rounds: Marsh Top, Moor Side, Upper Marsh, Oxenhope and Haworth.
Not on that list? It says nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and the majority of towns around West Yorkshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Near a boundary, or somewhere your satnav misreads? Ring us to ask rather than presuming.
This map is the patch this page covers. We operate at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and your vehicle does not need to travel to us.
Stranded on the roadside somewhere in Marsh?
Not everybody finds a suitable spot to pull over. Set off, then realised? Ended up along the verge of Marsh Lane, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards on? That is a routine call here. Not an unusual one.
Stay beside the car when it's wise to be inside, yet clear of it if it isn't. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the blend further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. However inconvenient the spot, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that is far better for the car than pressing on.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
Here is where the local M606 comes in, under 10 miles away from Marsh. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.
The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our engineers bring changes.
Where's Marsh?
Marsh is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated near the river and characterised by detached housing. Marsh sits at an elevation of 242 metres, with nearby areas including Marsh Top, Moor Side, and Upper Marsh. Marsh is located approximately 8.6 miles from Bradford and 177.1 miles from London, making it a relatively rural suburb with easy access to larger cities.
What happens when we get to you around Marsh
- Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
- That tank is cleared of everything.
- Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
- It's started with new diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it is running correctly.
At that point it's ready to set off. There is no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it is noticed soon, permanent damage is very rare.
A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Marsh
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the engine remains off — while this issue underneath it's a separate one altogether. The protection a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue instead.
We cover both, and AdBlue removal around Marsh has its own page with the full story — including why it's often the more serious of the two.
Marsh costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain
Honestly, no single price fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what changes it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Whether a van can sensibly get to your car and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.
The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. If it's not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Marsh
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Marsh?
A large part of this work happens there, so yes. Our engineers visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the site's permission — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.
Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?
Whether the engine has run counts far more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. What settles how much work is required is whether that blend has been drawn through the system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. It's recoverable a lot more frequently than people expect, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A drain and flush carried out properly is not a modification and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. It belongs to a separate issue from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. The tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to live with it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, as our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.
Is your vehicle still with you?
Your engine stays off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than drivers expect.
