Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Maryland?

With your tank still carrying the petrol and the engine not yet started, nearly every job takes only a drain, so keep the motor off. That outcome is settled in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that got in. Across Maryland and the rest of Greater London, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Phone before everything else starts, so you'll learn what follows from there.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine enough for a few miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't start it. And once started, don't depend on it: the fuel system is grinding while you drive.
  • Leave the ignition off also. Diesel performs two tasks: it ignites, and before it burns it greases your high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is commonly enough to prime your system, which carries that petrol out of the tank and into exactly those components.
  • Don't pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it just hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Mirabelle Gardens, anywhere — a tricky place for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a motor that never shifted.
  • The van turning up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode starting E20 1, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Have both prepared before you call.
  • What got in, roughly how much, and if your car has started — the three details decide the full call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Can petrol be drained from a diesel at the forecourt?

The work kicks off at a pump, usually. Often enough it wraps up there as well. We work on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's permission, so if you are still at TotalEnergies that is typically where the drain takes place.

A filling station is the single setting this gets stopped before your motor has started. We can still put it right where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for your key are what decide that.

Move the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next driver gets past the pump, and that is worth doing. Cranking it just to roll four vehicle lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Maryland

We're in car parks like the one outside Wa Na Hong Oriental Supermarket often, and it's rarely the fuel that complicates them. It is the bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height bar at the entrance, which decides if our van can reach you at all. So tell us how hemmed in you are when you ring, and which way the vehicle is facing. If there is no room to work beside that Skoda Octavia, our technicians move it without the motor. That's not fussiness over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of your tank towards your pump, and a vehicle shifted twice for a better spot is quietly a worse job than one no one touched.

Do not chance it. The journey home from Mother Kelly's E20 is quite possible, which is exactly the problem — a weakened tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the components the fuel is supposed to lubricate. Call us, and let the Dacia Duster stay where it is.

Leave the Mercedes E-Class near The Lighthouse then ring us. We are direct about not driving on as a worn pump loses, and what it sheds travels downstream with the fuel to the injectors beyond it.

Rattling, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That's a misfilled diesel Citroen C4 telling you what's wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, near #MyE20 or anywhere else, and do not start the vehicle to find a better place.

What takes place next is the problem. Your engine immediately sucks the petrol still sitting in the filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put clean diesel in, somebody confident will tell you — and that advice is half true, since do it to a diesel BMW X3 parked up, Gorilla say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Phone us instead. Our technicians flush the system and take your filter off where the vehicle has a working one, and that is the difference between the vehicle being fixed and the vehicle merely starting.

Can our engineers cover your corner of Maryland?

Stratford New Town, Stratford, Stratford Marsh, Temple Mills, Hackney Marsh — each of these on the runs that carry us across to Maryland as well, a residential suburb.

Not on the list? It says nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and most towns around Greater London have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Presuming is the habit to resist, above all on a boundary or somewhere your phone gets lost. Phone and ask.

This map shows the patch this page spans. Every bit of it is territory our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never bring your vehicle anywhere.

Maryland: stranded where you stopped

Not everybody has a suitable spot to stop. If you realised after setting off and landed along the verge on Liberty Bridge Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that is a common call for us and not an odd one.

Whether you sit beside the motor or stand clear of it depends on if being in it seems sensible. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We'll bring our van to an inconvenient spot without any bother, and for the car that's far better than pressing on.

Run it already? Stop, then read this

This is where the M11 comes into it — under 5 miles away from Maryland. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power falls away, your idle turns lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Get off at the first safe junction, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to reposition. It affects what we bring, so say so when you ring: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 5 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

A little about Maryland

Maryland is a suburban area in Greater London, situated on the riverside with an elevation of around 8 metres. Maryland is located near Stratford New Town, Stratford, and Stratford Marsh, and is approximately 5.9 miles from central London. Maryland has a population of around 18742 people, predominantly residing in flats. Maryland is close to London, with the nearest city centre being about 4.4 miles away.

When we reach you in Maryland: what we do

  • The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.
  • Our engineers clear that tank of the polluted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • It is started with new diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running correctly.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. There's no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Maryland is a different job

Never crank it: that first instruction applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal in Maryland has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. We cover both.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Maryland

Frankly, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here's what changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much your tank holds.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can sensibly reach the car and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and whether it has run. For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not time-critical, works too.

Petrol in diesel: common queries around Maryland

I am on a forecourt in Maryland. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes, and it's where a large portion of this work gets done. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Asda is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there is possible.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your engine has run counts a lot more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. What decides how much work is needed is whether that mix has been sucked through the system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving is what shifts the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable a lot more regularly than motorists fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to live with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, since our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is.

You, and your car, still together?

That engine stays off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best place available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
