Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Matson

Do not turn on the engine. While the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that is decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they stand, all over Matson and the remainder of Gloucestershire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Phone so we will tell you what happens next before you do much else.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't fire it up. Turned on all the same? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually can't run, and so the person stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for a couple of miles. People get that muddled. It is not fine — your fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
  • Flicking the ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition be.
  • Do not tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it merely leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Larkham Close, anywhere — an odd location for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a motor that never shifted.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode that starts GL4 6, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than showing up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the car has started. These three details shape your whole visit.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is idle, and so a diesel Volkswagen Golf left at Gloucester this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pushed weakened diesel through your pump was the trip in. Phone before you go to collect it.

Petrol in your Renault Clio, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at Morrisons, somewhere around Matson? Then phone, and leave the engine out of it — not even to exit the space. Somebody comes out to you. Tank drained, fuel lines flushed, clean diesel in, and home you go. Light throttle over a mile uses hardly anything, so these are usually the simple jobs.

None of that is the engine failing. That is the part worth hearing, and it is why the ordinary Matson Wood call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Ford Kuga drives out there without fuss, comes back with the power gone, the idle lumpy and maybe a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting components it runs through; petrol thins it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure rather than only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built escapes past clearances, delivery turns up weaker and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once the fuel is put right.

Most of these occur somewhere strange, and the cause is mechanical not sloppy — almost no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Mercedes GLC, a fill-up near Saint Hilda's Hall that you didn't think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at the injectors.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle soft, idle ragged, and the diesel Hyundai Tucson is parked up close to Matson House. Your engine is not giving up — that deadness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so vehicles like yours generally get driven again before anybody picks up the phone. Do not. Off, then call us.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where the job usually kicks off, and where a good chunk of that ends. We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, and so if you're still at Shell that is normally where this drain gets done.

Before the engine has fired — a garage is the one spot this ends up halted. The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key determine how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where the vehicle is.

Attendants will usually pitch in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get past. Accept the offer. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

Coverage around Matson

As a residential suburb, Matson gets a steady visit, and its neighbours close by come with it on the same trip: Robinswood and Saintbridge, Tuffley and Upton St Leonards, Whaddon.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all locations around Gloucestershire, and the ones named above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being left off the list means nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come. Contact us and enquire instead of guessing, particularly when you are on the boundary or anywhere a satnav misreads.

That map shows the patch the page covers. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of that is ground we work on, and none of that asks the car to travel to us.

Stuck on the kerbside near Matson

Not everyone gets a chance to stop somewhere safe. Set off, then realised? Landed on the verge beside Matson Lane, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you stay by your car or step clear of it depends on if sitting there is wise. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. Pressing on causes the car far more harm than a technician heading out to an inconvenient place, and that is no bother for us.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has gone

Your M5 is the one that counts now, and it runs under a mile from Matson. A misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they appear are usually a drop in power, an uneven idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

Take the first junction that is safe, stop there, and never start the vehicle to reposition. On a longer run — anything approaching the under 3 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you phone. It affects what our technicians bring.

A little about Matson

Matson is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Gloucester, situated near the River Severn in Gloucestershire. Matson sits at an elevation of 71 metres, with nearby areas including Robinswood, Saintbridge, and Tuffley. Matson is characterized by its predominantly flat housing stock, which is typical of many suburban areas in the region. Matson is approximately 92.5 miles west of London, but its proximity to Gloucester makes it a popular residential choice.

The call-out around Matson, step by step

  • The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.
  • Our technicians clear the tank of the contaminated mixture.
  • What is remaining in your system shouldn't be what started the problem, so your fuel lines get purged and the fuel filter cleared.
  • Our technicians put new diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • It is run with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it's running correctly.

From there, you're ready to pull away. Our technicians do all of this wherever the car has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught early, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Matson?

The issue isn't the same, though the opening step is — don't fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue in its place.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Matson page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Matson

What moves the figure is listed below, since this job isn't one job and our technicians can't honestly put a single number on this page.

  • This is the big one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much that tank holds.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
  • Where the vehicle is, and whether a van can safely get to and work on it.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Matson

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Matson?

A large portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's agreement we work at Esso and the other forecourts locally routinely.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mixture sucked through it.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then keep the car off. Driving shifts the issue along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to remain off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Your pump still has to cope with it, because that tank still has petrol in it after that.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to take it to a main dealer, because our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

Waiting next to it?

Your engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, turn off, then let the vehicle stay that way. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
