Petrol in Diesel

Medburn: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up the motor as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car requires while the petrol is still in that tank and your engine has not yet been started, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has stopped in Medburn or the rest of Northumberland, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Phone and then we will explain what happens from here before you attempt anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Don't fire it up. Turned on anyway? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically can't run, so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away fine, for several miles. Most people get that confused. It's not okay — your fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Leave your ignition be as well. Diesel has two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching the ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime your system, which pulls that petrol out of that tank then into exactly those parts.
  • Never water down it. Diesel tipped on top takes out nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that hasn't moved is the simplest one to sort out, and we would sooner travel to an odd location than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on The Avenue, switch the hazards on and keep it there.
  • Before you phone, work out your position. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting NE20 0 — that is what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • What was put in, approximately how many litres, and whether the engine has fired — those three replies shape the entire call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Quarter past eight. A hurried top-up on the drive in. Close to eleven it hits you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has waited outside Wylam for three hours. Call us then keep the car where it sits. What matters is the journey in, as diesel both ignites and — before that — greases the pump and the fuel injectors, while petrol only ever burns. Those few miles worked the pump on a liquid stripped of most of its protection, and no quantity of standing in a car park adds any of it back. Hence the thing we ask about distance instead of hours sitting, and hence the instruction to leave your keys be till our technicians turn up.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision components it runs through, and petrol weakens it. That's the full process, and it explains the normal Bottany Bay Plantation call: a diesel Dacia Duster that went out there without complaint and came back down on power, rough at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when the fuel weakens, pressure that should build and stay built starts bleeding past clearances instead, and the engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was built about. No part of that is your engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is the fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is put right.

Why we're blunt about not driving on: your pump rests before the injectors, and so whatever a worn pump sheds travels downstream with the fuel. Leave the Mercedes E-Class by Dalton Village Hall then ring us.

A motor you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anyone spots anything, which is the hire and courtesy issue in one sentence — and how far it went is what decides the volume of petrol arriving at your injectors. Nothing careless about the mistake itself: a current diesel filler neck takes the slimmer petrol nozzle with practically no resistance, so new places see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, by Holy Trinity Church or not, and we will head to the BMW 5 Series.

By this point that tank isn't where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, the mix is in the fuel filter, the fuel lines, the pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Astra that made it by Vindobala needs your circuit purged, not drained.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Medburn

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Much of the work begins at a pump, which means a large chunk of it gets finished there. If you are still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that's normally where this drain gets done — we work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement.

A filling station is the single setting the mistake can be stopped before the motor has run. The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key determine how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a calamity, and we can still put it right where the car stands.

The attendants will usually offer to roll the car clear of the pump so the next driver can get past. That's worth doing. Moving the car four spaces doesn't justify starting the engine.

Areas our team cover near Medburn

Medburn is a rural village, and our team head out to it and to the areas around it on the usual journeys: Eachwick, Darras Hall, Dalton, High Callerton and Callerton Lane End.

There are separate pages for the majority of locations in Northumberland, and the ones mentioned above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list says nothing at all about if we come. Assuming is the habit to avoid, above all on the boundary or somewhere a satnav goes wrong. Ring us to check.

The area the page spans appears on this map. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground we cover, and none of it requires your vehicle to come to us.

Medburn: stranded where you pulled up

Not everyone gets a chance to stop anywhere safe. If you worked it out after setting off and landed along the verge beside The Nursery, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a routine call for us and not a rare one.

Sit by the motor while it is wise to be in it, but out of it when it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. Carrying on causes the car far more harm than our van heading out to a difficult location, and that is no trouble for us.

Petrol in a diesel, and the car has gone

under 10 miles out of Medburn, the local Central Motorway East is what counts now. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Pull off at the next safe exit, turn off, and never restart the car to move it. Assume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our engineers bring changes.

All about Medburn

Medburn is a small village in Northumberland, situated inland at an elevation of around 105 metres, approximately 8 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne. Medburn has a population of around 500 people, with predominantly detached housing. Medburn is close to nearby places such as Eachwick, Darras Hall, and Dalton, and is located in the North East region of England, about 253 miles from London.

What our engineers do when we reach you around Medburn

  • The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of it, and whether your engine has run.
  • The tainted fuel comes out of the tank.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • The engine is turned on and checked to make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. We do all of it wherever your car has stopped, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been noticed early, it is very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Medburn is a distinct job

Don't crank it: that first step stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Medburn has its own page with the details — including why it is usually the more significant of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Medburn

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page truthfully, since this job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • This is the key one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much your tank takes.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a technician.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

Medburn motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt around Medburn. Can you drain it here?

Yes, and it is where a large portion of this work takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's consent we attend Shell and the other forecourts around town routinely.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the engine has run counts far more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. What determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through the system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more frequently than people assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not a change, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct fault. So no. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Is your car still with you?

Your engine remains off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than drivers fear.
