Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Mellor?

Do not turn on your engine. While the fuel is still in your tank and the motor has not yet run, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that's decided in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, across Mellor and the rest of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. One ring to us is plenty: our technicians can tell you what comes from here. Make that first.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • While you drive, the pump and your injectors wear. That's why you never fire it up, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Leave the car's ignition off also. Diesel has two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it protects your high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Switching the ignition on is usually sufficient to prime the system, which carries that petrol out of that tank and into precisely those parts.
  • Never thin it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • We would much rather travel to a difficult location than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to sort than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Longhurst Lane, that means hazards on then keep the car.
  • The van arriving instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning SK6 5, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Get both ready before you phone.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three questions — what got in, roughly how many litres, plus if the motor has been turned over. The answers shape all that happens next.

The run in is what drew diluted diesel through the pump. Standing still has pushed nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, sitting outside Marple all day, waits idle in your tank while it waits. Call us first — before the keys turn.

A diesel pump meters fuel on demand, and a frantic morning drive demands plenty — so three miles in your BMW 3 Series seems like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine outside Mellor Primary School, already late, the receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, engine off, call us.

A diesel Dacia Duster parked in the car park by Royal Oak carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up until someone drives it home. Park it there overnight then call us in the morning. Nothing deteriorates as it sits. What our technicians will want to know is whether that run there was brief and chilly, as that is where petrol is least likely to burn fully — and what does not burn can get past the rings and into the sump.

Ringing from near Mellor Sports Club? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it is on. Room for our van beside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The place itself scarcely matters: on-street is where we work most, and we'd much rather have a narrow spot than a vehicle somebody has driven somewhere quicker. Then it's a drain for the Vauxhall Astra, a filter change where there's one worth changing, lines cleaned, clean fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of that is in your lines and not the tank.

By now your tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and that mixture goes into your filter, into the lines, into the pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel Mercedes A-Class that made it by Mellor Mill dig site wants its system cleared. Emptying is not the same thing.

On a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

A big share of this work ends up done at a pump, since that is where it often starts. The drain generally gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the station's permission, that is a place we work, and often.

The forecourt is the one location it can be stopped before your engine has run. The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for your key determine how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need flushing as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still put it right where your car is.

Push it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next driver gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Shifting it four lengths does not warrant starting it.

Service in Mellor

These same rounds carry us to Brook Bottom, Mill Brow, Marple Bridge, Hollywood End and Marple as well as Mellor, which is a village.

Not on the list? It says nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and nearly all locations in Greater Manchester have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Ring us and ask rather than presuming — borders above all, and anywhere your phone may misread.

Use this map for the patch included here. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is territory our technicians work on, and none of that asks your vehicle to come to us.

Kerbside breakdowns around Mellor

Not everybody has a sensible spot to stop. If you noticed after setting off and ended up along the verge beside Parkside Lane, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a normal call for us rather than a rare one.

Clear of the motor while it isn't sensible to wait in it, with it if it is. Don't restart it to reach a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into the system. Driving on causes the vehicle far more harm than a technician heading out to an awkward spot, and that is no problem for us.

Petrol in a diesel, and the car has gone

This is where the M60 comes in — under 5 miles away from Mellor. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Don't restart it to move it. Come off at the first sensible junction then turn off. It changes what we bring, and so say so when you phone: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.

What our engineers do when our engineers reach you around Mellor

  • The answers alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
  • Our technicians clear your tank of all the polluted fuel.
  • Our engineers purge the fuel lines and clean your filter, so what's remaining in the system is not what caused the problem.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • The motor is started and tested to make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

That leaves your car ready to drive away. All of it is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Mellor?

The issue isn't the same, though the first step is — do not fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol dilutes your diesel and takes away the protection the system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and build-up instead.

AdBlue removal in Mellor has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. We handle both.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Mellor

We can't put one price on this page truthfully, as this job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

Petrol in diesel queries from Mellor motorists

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Mellor?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair portion of this gets done. Often, provided the site consents: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our technicians answer straight away.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the motor has run counts much more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mix has been pulled through your fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave it off. Driving is what moves the issue from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable a lot more often than motorists fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to put up with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.

Still with your car?

That engine remains off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
