Petrol in Diesel

Merry Oak: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a car requires while the petrol is still inside your tank and your engine has not yet turned over, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has stopped in Merry Oak or the remainder of Hampshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. One call to us is enough: our team shall explain what comes after this. Try it right away.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — fine enough for a few miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not start the vehicle. And if started, never depend on it: the fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. That is why your ignition is left off as well — flick it on and you usually prime the system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for just those components.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It does not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A car that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to handle, so wait where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Acacia Road? Hazards on, then leave the car there. An odd location works for us better than a started engine.
  • Our van showing up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode starting SO19 7, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Have both prepared before you phone.
  • Three replies decide the full job: the stuff you tipped in, the ballpark volume of it, and if anything has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Taking it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has pushed real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return trip would roughly double the figure to no gain. The Volkswagen Golf can sit outside Sholing perfectly happily. Ring from the platform if handier; standing over us whilst our engineers work is not required.

A diesel pump meters fuel to demand, and a rushed morning run demands plenty — so three miles in the Ford Focus feels like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine by Sholing Junior School, already late, a receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, engine off, phone.

You drive off at the end, once we have fired it up and made sure it runs properly on clean diesel, with your system bled. Before that, in the car park by The Robin Hood, the polluted fuel comes out of that tank, your lines get rinsed and the fuel filter comes off where your Mercedes C-Class has a replaceable one. Everything starts with three questions when our technicians get to your car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

Out there happy, back sluggish. If that was the trip to Veracity Recreation Ground, look at your tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the fine tolerances supposed to build injection pressure — so every additional mile your diesel Peugeot 3008 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, phone us.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you ring us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it after that. Then phone us about the Vauxhall Insignia close to Spring Road Evangelical Church, and do not worry that you can't say how full that tank was. Almost nobody can, in a vehicle they picked up two days ago, and we work it out there. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a share: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mix, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

A good part of the work gets finished at the pump, as that is where it often starts. The drain normally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Southampton Logs? Given the owner's permission, that is a place our technicians work, and routinely.

The forecourt is the only place this gets spotted before the motor has run. The few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the key decide how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter require cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where your car sits.

Staff will normally help out pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Accept the help. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

Merry Oak and the areas beside it

Merry Oak is a residential suburb, so our team go out to it and to the villages near it on those same journeys: Peartree Green, Sholing Common, Itchen, Bitterne and Woolston.

Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and the majority of locations around Hampshire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Presuming is the thing to resist, above all on the boundary or anywhere a satnav fails. Contact us and enquire.

The patch this page covers appears on our map. Our technicians work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and your car never needs to move to us.

Merry Oak: stranded where you parked

The opportunity to pull over somewhere safe does not come to everyone. A normal call for us rather than an odd one: noticed after setting off, ended up on the verge beside Merry Oak Green or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Out of the motor if it is not safe to be inside, by it if it is. Do not fire up the engine to limp it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the blend further into the fuel system. Pressing on does the car far more harm than a van driving out to a difficult spot, and that's no trouble for us.

Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has gone

Here is where the M27 comes in — under 3 miles away from Merry Oak. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the first exit that is sensible, stop there, and do not start it to reposition. Presume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you call. What our technicians bring changes.

About Merry Oak

Merry Oak is a suburban area located near the coast in Hampshire, sitting at an elevation of 37 metres and approximately 1.7 miles from Southampton. Merry Oak forms part of the larger Southampton urban area, with nearby places including Peartree Green and Sholing Common. Merry Oak has a population of around 8523 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Merry Oak is also close to the Itchen area, with its scenic views and outdoor spaces.

What our technicians do when our technicians reach you in Merry Oak

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers shape what the work really is.
  • The tank is emptied completely.
  • What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what created the issue, and so the lines get purged and your filter cleared.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • Our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been caught early, and because all of this is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Merry Oak

The issue is not the same, though the first instruction is — never fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up in its place.

Both are ours. There is a separate Merry Oak page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Merry Oak

Truthfully, no single figure belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much your tank takes.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Merry Oak drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Merry Oak petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this gets done. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's permission our technicians attend BP and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It's fixable a lot more frequently than people fear, even though driving is what takes the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate issue and it does not put back what petrol has weakened. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

Is your car still with you?

Keep it switched off.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off then keep it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.

Throughout Hampshire and in Merry Oak: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
