Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Merton?
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across Merton and the remainder of Greater London. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. When the motor has not yet run and the fuel is still in that tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Call us so our engineers will explain what happens next before you try much else.
Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Never start the car. Turned on regardless? Then do not trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally can't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away fine, for several miles. Most people get that backwards. It's not okay — your fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why your ignition is left off too — turn it on and you often prime the system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for precisely those parts.
- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
- Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Station Road, anywhere — a difficult place for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a vehicle that never shifted.
- Get your location ready before you ring. A postcode that starts SW19 2 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van showing up and the van circling.
- What was put in, roughly how many litres, and if the motor has run — these three replies decide the whole call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
Can petrol be taken out of your diesel at the forecourt?
Plenty of the job starts at the pump, so a large chunk of that ends up done at one. The drain normally gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Sainsbury's? Given the station's consent, that is somewhere our technicians work, and regularly.
No place but a forecourt can it be halted with your engine still cold. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the keys.
Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you move it. Worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.
Places we serve near Merton
The same runs get us to Colliers Wood, South Wimbledon, Merton Park, Tooting Graveney and Morden besides Merton, which is a small village.
We still come. Those names above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations across Greater London, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Contact us and ask rather than guessing — borders above all, and anywhere your phone might misread.
This map shows the area the page covers. Our technicians work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and your car never needs to come to us.
Move the vehicle out of the gateway and fix it later — that is what a passer-by will say, and it's wrong. Sitting on the zig-zags by Merton Abbey Primary School, a misfuelled diesel BMW 3 Series is a hassle and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for politeness, it's no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, since priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes past the fuel filter toward the pump. Let people moan. Phone us.
Easy job, this one — until someone takes it home. A diesel Peugeot 308 sitting at The Merton Apprentice with petrol in that tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, and so park the car then call us once it's light. Expect a query about that drive there, though. Brief and cold is exactly where petrol fails to burn, and what will not burn can work past the rings and into the oil.
The pump isn't turning, and so whatever your diesel Nissan Qashqai did on the way to The Paul Bowness Memorial Gardens, none of that is happening now. Nothing gets worse whilst it waits. Take your time over this — but don't drive the vehicle home to buy any.
Hire car or company car? Ring them before you ring us — some agreements want the hire firm to approve the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it after that. Then call us about the Mercedes C-Class close to Merton Abbey Mills, and do not worry that you cannot say how full the tank was. Nearly nobody can, in a motor they picked up two days ago, and our engineers work it out there. The reason our engineers ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the mixture, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.
It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went dead, your idle turned ragged, and the diesel Audi A3 is now sitting close to Merton Priory Chapter House Museum. That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully rather than the motor failing — and since there's no warning for it, vehicles in that position generally get driven once more before anybody rings. Don't. Turn it off and phone us.
Merton: broken down where you parked
Some people find no suitable place to pull in at all. Set off, then twigged? Finished up by the verge on A24, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a routine call here. Not an unusual one.
Whether you sit by your car or move away from it depends on if being there feels sensible. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the blend further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. Pressing on causes the car far more harm than our van heading out to a difficult spot, and that is no problem for us.
Petrol in a diesel, but the car has travelled
under 10 miles out of Merton, the local M4 is what counts now. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Take the first junction that's safe, stop there, and never restart it to move it. Suppose the worst of it on a long run. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our technicians bring alters.
Where is Merton?
Merton is a locality in south London, situated on the River Wandle and close to the suburbs of Colliers Wood and South Wimbledon. Merton sits at a low elevation of around 15 metres, with many of its residents living in flat dwellings. Merton is part of the wider London urban area, with Westminster and central London within easy reach. Merton borders Merton Park to the east, and is connected to the surrounding area by a network of roads and public transport links.
The call-out around Merton, step by step
- The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.
- The contaminated mixture comes from your tank.
- Our technicians rinse the lines and clean the filter, and so what's left in your system isn't what started the issue.
- Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.
- We turn it on and confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.
That has your car ready to pull away. Everything is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught early, long-term damage is very uncommon.
Merton AdBlue removal is a distinct problem
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the engine stays off — while this fault underneath it's a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up in its place.
AdBlue removal in Merton has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. We cover both.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Merton
Honestly, no single number fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what moves it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that proportion.
- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where the vehicle is, and whether our van can sensibly get to and work on it.
A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. If it's not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Petrol in diesel queries from Merton motorists
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Merton?
Yes, and it is where a good part of this work happens. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's permission our engineers work at Shell and the other forecourts nearby all the time.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Whether your motor has run matters a lot more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?
Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable a lot more frequently than drivers expect.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct problem and it does not put back what petrol has weakened. The pump still has to put up with it, since your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
No. Our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.
Waiting next to it?
Keep the car shut off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car after that. This is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists expect, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
