Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Methil? Don't Start It

Never turn on the engine. If the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not run, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, throughout Methil and the rest of Fife, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. We will tell you what the following part is. Call us — it happens before all else.

What to try next about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically not run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine enough for a couple of miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And if started, never rely on it: the fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the car's ignition stays off also — turn it on and you often prime your system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for precisely those components.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A motor that has not shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and our team would much rather get to a difficult spot than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Den Walk, switch those hazards on and leave the vehicle there.
  • Before you call, gather your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning KY8 3 — that's what decides whether our van shows up or circles.
  • Three facts shape your whole visit: the fuel you tipped in, the ballpark amount involved, plus if it has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is harmless, so a diesel Renault Megane sitting at Leven this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew thinned diesel through your pump was the drive in. Phone us before you go to collect it.

Car parks like the one outside Sainsbury's are a place our engineers visit all the time, and your fuel is rarely the difficult part. That bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit on the way in that settles if our van can access you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you ring, and which way the vehicle is facing. When our technicians cannot work alongside your diesel Volkswagen Tiguan we will move it without starting it — and that isn't pedantry about a couple of seconds of running. Each start primes the fuel system and pulls more of that mix out of that tank and on to the pump, and so a motor moved twice into a better space has quietly become a worse job than one left just where it stopped.

Twenty to nine. Outside the local primary school. Late already, and the receipt in your hand says unleaded. Put the hazard lights on, leave your ignition alone, then phone. You may think three miles is nothing, in your Peugeot 308 or anything else — except that fuel is delivered on demand, and a run taken in a hurry needs a great deal of that.

Clattering, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That's a misfilled diesel Dacia Duster telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, close to Wellesley Parish Church or anywhere else, and never restart the car to find a better location.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle uneven, and the diesel Audi A3 is parked up by Methil Library. The motor is not packing up — that deadness is fuel that won't build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, and so cars like yours normally get driven again before anyone picks up the phone. Do not. Off, then call us.

Can petrol be taken from your diesel at the forecourt?

Plenty of this work begins at a forecourt, which means a big portion of that gets done there. The drain generally happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the site's permission, that is somewhere our technicians work, and routinely.

At a garage, the mistake gets halted with your motor never fired, and nowhere else does it. The few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key settle how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank. It's not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where your car is.

Clear of the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you move it. Worth it. Starting the car to roll four car lengths is not.

Areas our team reach in Methil

As a coastal town, Methil has a regular visit, whilst its neighbours close by go with it on the same journey: Kirkland and Innerleven, Methilhill and Denbeath, Kirkland Dam.

There are pages for nearly all locations in Fife, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from this list tells you nothing whatsoever about if we come. Guessing is the habit to skip, above all on a border or somewhere your satnav goes wrong. Ring us and enquire.

Use the map for the patch covered on this page. We work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and the car does not need to come to us.

Broken down on the roadside near Methil

A chance to stop somewhere sensible does not fall to everybody. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Methil Brae as you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.

Whether you remain by your car or move clear of it depends on if sitting there looks wise. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. However difficult the location, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that is far better for the car than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has travelled

Here is where the M90 matters, under 15 miles from Methil. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power drains away, the idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.

Never start it to reposition. Get off at the first safe junction and switch off. On a longer run — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors, and say so when you phone. It alters what we bring.

Where's Methil?

Methil is a coastal town in Fife, situated on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, with nearby settlements including Kirkland and Innerleven. Methil has a relatively low elevation of 28 metres above sea level and is located approximately 17 miles from Edinburgh. Methil is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock, which reflects the town's development as a residential area. Methil is also close to the smaller settlement of Methilhill, which is part of the larger urban area.

Once we arrive with you around Methil: what happens

  • The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and whether the engine has run.
  • The contaminated fuel is pulled out of your tank.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later is not the thing that started the trouble.
  • Your system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • Our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

Then it's ready to pull away. There is no need for a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's noticed early, lasting damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Methil is a different job

The problem is not the same, though the opening rule is — don't crank it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Methil page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Methil

Our engineers cannot put one figure on this page frankly, as this job is not one job. What moves it:

  • This is the key one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and if a van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel in Methil

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Methil?

Yes, and it is where a big portion of this work gets done. Our engineers work at Sainsbury's and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mix sucked through it.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more regularly than people expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, as our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is.

Still with the vehicle?

Shut off is how the car remains.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more regularly than people expect.
