Petrol in Diesel

Middleton Cheney: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the motor as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a motor needs while the fuel is still inside your tank and your engine has not turned over, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Middleton Cheney or the remainder of Northamptonshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. Our technicians can tell you what your next step is. Call us — this goes before everything else.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for a few miles. People have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not crank it. And once started, never trust it: the fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Leave the ignition be too. Diesel has two tasks: it combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates your high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning your ignition on is often all it takes to prime the system, which carries this petrol out of your tank and into just those components.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel put on top clears nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that has not shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and we would much rather travel to a difficult location than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Church Lane, switch those hazards on then leave the vehicle there.
  • Get your location prepared before you phone. A postcode that starts OX17 2 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van showing up and the van circling.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, about how much, and if the car has started. Those three replies decide the full visit.

Do not take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through your injection pump in real volume on the drive in, and the way back would close to double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is okay. There's no need to stand over the Volkswagen Golf outside Banbury while the work goes on, and we'd very much rather speak to you tonight than learn on Monday.

Diesel Renault Clio. A few litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Shut off now, at Sklep Grosik. That's the call our engineers hope for, since the real question underneath it's about quantity through your pump rather than hours on the clock.

What our technicians will ask is whether the trip there was brief and cold, since that's where petrol is slowest to burn properly — and what doesn't burn can work past the rings then into the oil. Right up to the moment someone takes it home, a diesel Audi A4 standing in the car park outside The Dolphin Inn with a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing worsens whilst it stands, and so leave the vehicle there overnight then ring us next morning.

Draining your Vauxhall Insignia, changing your filter where there is a serviceable one, cleaning the lines, putting fresh fuel through the full circuit: that's this job, and it is shaped by the worst of it sitting in the fuel lines rather than in that tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from near The Baptist Centre — which side the filler is on, whether our van can stand next to without blocking the road, and whether your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual spot our technicians work, and so the place itself is seldom the problem. A tight parking spot beats a motor driven somewhere more convenient.

Most of these happen somewhere strange, and the cause is mechanical instead of careless — almost no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Volvo XC60, a fill-up close to Middleton Cheney Methodist Church that you did not think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at your injectors.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Middleton Cheney

Clearing petrol from the diesel at the forecourt

A big share of the work ends up completed at the pump, as that's where it usually begins. If you're still at the forecourt at Harvest Energy, that is normally where this drain takes place — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's permission.

At a forecourt, it is spotted with your motor never started, and no place else manages that. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for your key.

The staff will generally happily wheel it away from the pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a start.

Can our engineers cover your end of Middleton Cheney?

Those same runs take us to Lower Middleton Cheney, Chacombe, Overthorpe, Thenford and Warkworth besides Middleton Cheney, which is a rural village.

If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for most locations across Northamptonshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the nearest neighbours. Assuming is the habit to skip, particularly on a border or somewhere the satnav fails. Contact us and check.

Check our map for the ground shown here. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and your vehicle does not need to come to us.

Stuck at the kerb somewhere in Middleton Cheney?

Some people have no suitable spot to pull in whatsoever. If you noticed after setting off and ended up by the verge beside Queen Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.

Fine where you are? Wait beside it. Not safe? Get out and clear of it. Do not restart it to reach a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the blend deeper into the system. We'll bring our van to an inconvenient location without any fuss, and for the car that is far better than carrying on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Here is where your M40 matters, under 3 miles from Middleton Cheney. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the first exit that is sensible, pull up there, and do not restart it to move it. On a longer run — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors, and mention it when you call. It changes what our technicians bring.

What follows when our technicians arrive with you in Middleton Cheney

  • The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of that, and if your engine has run.
  • The tainted fuel is pulled out of your tank.
  • What is left in the system shouldn't be what created the trouble, and so the lines get cleaned and your filter cleaned.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • Our technicians fire it up and check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Our technicians do everything wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Middleton Cheney

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your engine remains off — while the issue underneath it is a separate one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection your fuel system relies on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Middleton Cheney page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Middleton Cheney

One figure wouldn't be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for our van.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run. If it isn't pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around Middleton Cheney

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Middleton Cheney?

Much of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's consent our technicians visit Esso and the other forecourts around town regularly.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more regularly than motorists assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate fault. So no. Your tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, we drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Still with your car?

Leave the car shut off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then let the vehicle stay that way. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best place available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
