Middleton Tyas: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
If you have not turned on the motor as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not turned over, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has ended up in Middleton Tyas or the remainder of North Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Our engineers can tell you what the next part is. Call us — that goes before all else.
Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Do not fire it up — and do not believe it when it starts. This is the part most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel typically just will not run, and so the driver stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives away perfectly well for several miles. It's not all right. It's grinding that fuel system while you drive.
- Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. That is why the ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you often prime your system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for exactly those parts.
- Do not put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
- A car that hasn't moved is the easiest one to handle, so wait where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Middleton Tyas Lane? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. A tricky place suits us better than a started engine.
- Have your position prepared before you phone. A postcode starting DL10 6 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van turning up and a van circling.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three queries — what was put in, about how much, and if your car has been turned over. Your answers determine whatever happens next.
Ring us before you move the car. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Golf this morning, and the car at Darlington ever since? Then the wait has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is dormant, and any wear came on the run in, when your pump was pulling diesel that petrol had weakened.
Never risk it. The trip home from Shoulder of Mutton is quite possible, which is precisely the problem — a thinned tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the parts the fuel is supposed to lubricate. Phone, and let the Audi A3 stay where it sits.
Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and weaker fuel seeps past the close-fitting components that are meant to build that pressure, and so the further a diesel Mercedes A-Class travelled, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and flat on the way back is how the trip to Lamberry Bank Plantation went, then, and your tank is where to look. Pull over somewhere safe, switch off then ring us.
Three things help when you ring from close to Memorial Hall: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can park next to without blocking the road, and whether your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common place our engineers work, and so the place itself is hardly ever the issue — we would much rather deal with a cramped parking spot than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We will drain your BMW X1, change your filter where there is a workable one, flush the fuel lines and put clean fuel through the full system, since by this point the worst of that is sitting in your lines rather than in the tank.
By now the tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and the mixture goes into your filter, into the lines, into the pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with your tank contents. A diesel Volvo XC60 that made it by St Andrew wants its circuit purged. Draining isn't the same thing.
Clearing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt
The work starts at the pump, generally. Often enough the job ends there too. Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's permission, so if you are still at Esso that is generally where this drain takes place.
At a forecourt, it is caught with your engine never fired, and no place else does it. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key.
Staff will generally help out pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get through. Accept the help. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.
Can we reach your corner of Middleton Tyas?
As a rural village, Middleton Tyas gets a regular visit, while the places close by go along on that same trip: Scotch Corner and Moulton, Barton and Newton Morrell, Melsonby.
If yours is not on this list that does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of locations around North Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours. On the border, or somewhere the satnav gets wrong? Phone to check instead of presuming.
This map shows the area this page spans. Your car does not need to travel to us. We work throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Middleton Tyas: broken down wherever you stopped
Not everybody finds a decent spot to pull over. If you noticed after setting off and ended up by the verge on Village Farm, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that is a routine call for us rather than an odd one.
Wait by the car while it is wise to sit inside, but clear of the vehicle when it isn't. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mixture further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. However difficult the location, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for the vehicle than pressing on.
Run it already? Pull in, and read below
under a mile out of Middleton Tyas, the A1(M) is what matters here. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, the idle turns rough, and there may be some smoke.
Take the first exit that is sensible, pull up there, and do not start it to move it. Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our engineers bring changes.

What comes next when our engineers arrive with you around Middleton Tyas
- Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
- The tainted fuel is drawn from your tank.
- Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
- The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
- Once it is fired up, our engineers confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.
After that it's ready to pull away. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted early, lasting damage is very uncommon.
A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Middleton Tyas
If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is unchanged — never fire it up — yet the issue isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.
Both are ours. There is a separate Middleton Tyas page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Middleton Tyas
What moves the figure is laid out below, because this job is not one job and we cannot honestly put a single figure on this page.
- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.
- The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where the car is, and whether a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.
Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.
Things we hear about petrol in diesel around Middleton Tyas
I am on a forecourt in Middleton Tyas. Can you drain the car here?
Yes, and it's where a big share of this work happens. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's consent we visit Shell and the other forecourts around town all the time.
Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?
Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture drawn through it.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
No. It belongs to a separate fault from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. The pump still has to cope with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.
Still with the car?
The engine stays off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
