Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Mile Oak? Don't Start It

Don't fire up your engine. While the petrol is still inside your tank and the motor has not run, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that is decided in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, across Mile Oak and the remainder of Kent, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. We will explain what the following part is. Ring us — this goes before everything else.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it. Fired up anyway? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor usually will not run, and so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for a couple of miles. Most people get that backwards. It's not all right — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it ignites it protects — your injection pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be as well: turning it on is usually sufficient to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into exactly those parts.
  • Do not water down it. Diesel poured on top takes out nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • We'd much rather get to an awkward spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a car that has not moved. On the verge on Mile Oak Road, that means hazards on and keep the car.
  • Know where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts TN12 6, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, about how many litres, plus whether your car has fired. These three details determine the full job.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Running it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has sent real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return leg would more or less double the figure to no gain. The Skoda Octavia can wait outside Paddock Wood perfectly well. Call from the platform if easier; standing over us while our engineers work isn't required.

You drive off at the end, once we have started the car and confirmed it runs properly on clean diesel, with your system bled. Before that, in the car park by the pub in the village, the polluted fuel comes out of your tank, your lines get rinsed and the fuel filter comes off where your Dacia Duster has a serviceable one. Everything starts with three questions when our technicians reach the vehicle: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

Your pump is not turning, and so whatever the diesel BMW 5 Series did on the way to Christmas tree farm, none of that is happening now. Nothing is getting worse while it stands. Take your time over this — but don't drive the car home to buy any.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and parked your diesel Citroen C3 up by Putlands Leisure Centre a couple of hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Phone us and leave the vehicle off. The short distance truly assists, but it was still a start and a drive, and so diluted fuel has got to the fuel filter and the pump — which is why our technicians rinse the lines rather than only draining that tank.

Knocking, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That's a misfilled diesel Vauxhall Insignia telling you what is wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, close to Paddock Wood Town Council or anywhere else, and do not start it to find a better place.

Draining petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

The work starts at the pump, mostly. Often enough the work ends at one too. The drain generally happens right there. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the station's permission, that's a place our engineers work, and regularly.

Before the engine has started — a forecourt is the one location the mistake ends up spotted. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where it is. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the keys.

Staff will usually chip in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get past. Accept the offer. Moving the car four spaces does not justify starting the motor.

Mile Oak plus the areas near it

Hill Top, The Crook, Pearsons Green, Castle Hill, Paddock Wood — each of those on the rounds that bring us out to Mile Oak itself, a rural hamlet.

If yours is not on that list that does not mean we never come — there are pages for the majority of places across Kent, and the ones named above are just the immediate neighbours. Guessing is the habit to skip, above all on a border or somewhere your satnav gets lost. Phone and ask.

Check the map for the area covered on this page. The car doesn't need to move to us. We work throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

The opportunity to stop somewhere safe doesn't come to everyone. Set off, then noticed? Ended up along the verge on Knowle Lane, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards going? That is a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Whether you remain with the vehicle or stand clear of it hangs on if being nearby seems sensible. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the trouble: restart it to get to somewhere handier and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled. Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van heading out to a tricky spot, and that is no bother for us.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

Here is where the M20 counts, under 10 miles from Mile Oak. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are normally a drop in power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. It alters what our engineers bring, and so mention it when you call: on a longer run — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

Mile Oak itself

Mile Oak is a small hamlet in Kent, situated inland at an elevation of around 30 metres. Mile Oak lies near several other small settlements, including Hill Top, The Crook, and Pearsons Green, and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Mile Oak is located approximately 32.8 miles from London and 29 miles from the city of Southend-on-Sea, making it a rural outpost in the South East of England. Mile Oak has a population of around 548 residents, who live in a quiet, rural environment.

The job in Mile Oak, step by step

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the motor run? Those replies alter what the work actually is.
  • We empty that tank of the polluted fuel.
  • We flush the lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what is remaining in the system is not what caused the trouble.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • We fire it up and check it runs properly on new diesel.

From there, you're ready to pull away. Everything is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, long-term damage is very unusual.

Mile Oak AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

Never crank it: that first step stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and build-up instead.

Both are ours. There's a separate Mile Oak page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Mile Oak?

Our engineers cannot put one figure on this page truthfully, as this job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if a technician can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Mile Oak motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt around Mile Oak. Can you drain it here?

A fair portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's permission we work at Shell and the other forecourts around town all the time.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more frequently than drivers expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. Our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

Still with the vehicle?

Leave the car switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle afterwards. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.
