Petrol in Diesel

Millfields: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still carrying the petrol and the motor not yet turned over, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep the engine off. That result is determined in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. All over Millfields and the remainder of West Midlands, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. We can tell you what your next stage will be. Ring us — that happens ahead of all else.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and your injectors suffer. That is why you do not fire it up, and why you never believe it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Leave the car's ignition alone too. Diesel has two roles: it burns, and before it ignites it lubricates the injection pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime your system, which pulls that petrol out of that tank then into just those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests — so don't pour diesel on top to thin it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you safely can. A car that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort out, and we would sooner drive to an odd spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Upton Gardens, turn your hazards on and leave it there.
  • Before you ring, gather your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning WV14 0 — that's what determines whether the van arrives or circles.
  • What went in, about how many litres, and also if the motor has started — these three replies settle the whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Plenty of this work begins at a forecourt, so a big chunk of that ends up finished on site. Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's permission, and so if you are still at Shell that's typically where the drain takes place.

A forecourt is the single spot it gets spotted before the engine has fired. The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the keys settle how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It's not a calamity, and we can still sort it out where the vehicle stands.

Staff will normally help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get through. Take the offer. Firing it for four vehicle lengths? Never.

Millfields and the places beside it

Being a residential suburb, Millfields gets a steady call, and the areas close by go along on that same journey: Freezeland and Bilston, Ladymoor and Spring Vale, Ettingshall.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we do not come — there are pages for nearly all towns across West Midlands, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours. On the boundary, or anywhere a satnav gets wrong? Call us and enquire instead of assuming.

The map marks the patch this page spans. All of that is ground our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not bring the car anywhere.

Nothing alerts you, because from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Ford Focus will have seemed entirely ordinary on the way back from Bilston Church of England Primary School, and they all do — which is the snag with petrol in a diesel rather than the reverse. Diesel in a petrol motor usually refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the harm with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, idles, drives off as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump works without the protection its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

Here's the full mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which accounts for the ordinary Black Country Millennium Forest call — a diesel Vauxhall Astra, out there without a murmur and back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it escapes past those tolerances instead of building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than your engine was built about. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left by Beth's Arch. For a diesel Mercedes A-Class whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Call us, and let the vehicle stand with your ignition alone. Short assists, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the lines get rinsed and not just your tank cleared.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you ring us — some contracts want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it later on. Then phone us about the Volvo XC60 near Three Columns, and don't worry that you cannot say how full your tank was. Almost no one can, in a car they picked up two days ago, and our engineers work it out on the spot. The reason we ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mixture, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

That deadness is the fuel failing to build pressure correctly, not the motor packing up — and with no warning for it, cars in that position generally get driven once more before anyone phones. Don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Skoda Superb now resting near Alderman Herbert Beach JP 1874-1953. Turn it off and phone us.

Roadside breakdowns across Millfields

Not everybody gets a suitable spot to pull over. If you realised after setting off and landed by the verge beside Elford Grove, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights flashing, that is a normal call for us and not an unusual one.

Remain beside the motor when it is sensible to sit inside, and clear of it if it's not. Don't fire it up to reach a nicer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that blend deeper into your fuel system. Our van heading to a tricky place is no bother for us, and it's much better for your car than pressing on.

Run it already? Pull over, then see this

Here is where your M6 comes in — under 5 miles away from Millfields. A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the first junction that's sensible, stop there, and don't restart the vehicle to move it. Long trip? Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the phone, since it affects what goes in the van.

Where is Millfields?

Millfields is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Wolverhampton, near the riverside and at an elevation of 148 metres. Millfields sits close to nearby places such as Freezeland, Bilston, and Ladymoor, and is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing. Millfields is situated approximately 2.4 miles from Wolverhampton city centre and around 110.7 miles from London. Millfields has a population of around 4278 residents.

What our engineers do when we arrive with you in Millfields

  • Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The tank gets drained of it.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that started the problem.
  • We pour fresh diesel in and prime the system.
  • We turn it on and make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. There is no need for a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it's spotted soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Millfields

Never fire it up: that opening rule holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the issue itself. Petrol weakens the diesel and takes away the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Millfields has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers handle both.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Millfields

One figure would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly reach the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range. If it's not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Millfields

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Millfields?

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this gets done. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the station's consent we visit Morrisons and the other forecourts locally routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been pulled through the system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable much more often than motorists assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a change and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to remain off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Shut off is the way the car stays.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off. Cold and parked, a motor is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
