Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Milltimber?
Do not fire up the engine. If the petrol is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not turned over, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they stand, all over Milltimber and the remainder of Aberdeen City, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. One ring to us is sufficient: our engineers can show you what follows next. Make this right away.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Whenever you drive, your pump and the injectors wear. That's why you do not start the vehicle, and why you never rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the part motorists get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.
- Leave your ignition off too. Diesel does two jobs: it ignites, and before it burns it protects your high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is commonly enough to prime the system, which draws that petrol out of the tank then into just those components.
- Don't weaken it. Diesel poured on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
- Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and our team would sooner come to an awkward location than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on North Deeside Road, turn the hazards on and leave it there.
- Keep your position prepared before you call. A postcode that starts AB13 0 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van arriving and our van circling.
- Three replies shape the entire call-out: the stuff you tipped in, the approximate volume involved, plus whether anything has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.
Never run it home. The commute has already sent a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of that Volkswagen Passat, and the drive back would more or less double it for no purpose at all. Ring us from the platform if that is simpler. Our technicians never need you standing over the vehicle at Portlethen while we get on, and we'd very much rather speak to you tonight than discover on Monday.
This is what a job in the car park outside The Ploughman generally looks like. We reach the vehicle, ask what got in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since — those three answers settle much of the work. Then the polluted mix comes out of the tank, your lines get flushed, and the filter comes off where your Nissan Qashqai has a serviceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and the fuel system is primed. Then our engineers fire it up, make sure it runs correctly, and you set off.
Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision components it runs through, and petrol dilutes it. That is the whole process, and it explains the ordinary Milltimber Community Green call: a diesel Audi A4 that drove out there without a murmur and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when your fuel weakens, pressure that should build and stay built starts bleeding past clearances instead, and the engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built about. None of that is your engine failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it's the fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is sorted.
Leave the Ford Focus by Deeside Christian Fellowship Church then call us. We're firm about not driving on because a worn pump loses, and what it gives off passes on with your fuel to your injectors downstream.
Rattling? Ragged idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That's your misfilled Dacia Duster, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, perhaps near Binghill stone circle, and leave the restarting alone.
Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel at a forecourt?
It begins at the pump, usually. Regularly the work ends at one too. We operate on station forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement, and so if you're still at BP that is usually where this drain gets done.
A filling station is the single setting the mistake can be spotted before the motor has run. We can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that drew fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to reach past the tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key are what settle that.
The attendants will normally help you move it away from the petrol pump so the next customer can get past. That is worth doing. Firing it to move four vehicle lengths is not.
Parts our team serve around Milltimber
As a rural village, Milltimber has a steady visit, and the villages nearby go with it on the same trip: Peterculter and Kirkton of Maryculter, Riverside of Blairs and Bieldside, Stony Hill.
Not on this list? It says nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and nearly all towns across Aberdeen City have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Near a boundary, or anywhere your satnav misreads? Contact us and enquire rather than guessing.
The area this page spans is on our map. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of it is territory we cover, and none of that needs your car to move to us.
Milltimber: stranded where you stopped
Not everyone has the chance to pull in anywhere safe. If you noticed after setting off and finished up by the verge of Contlaw Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that is a routine call for us instead of a rare one.
Safe there? Stay beside it. Not safe? Climb out and clear of it. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the problem: restart the car to get to somewhere handier and that mix goes further into the system with every mile travelled. We'll bring our van to an inconvenient place without any bother, and for your car that is far better than carrying on.
Run it already? Stop, then read this
over 50 miles out of Milltimber, the local M90 is what matters now. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power ebbs away, the idle goes uneven, and there may be smoke.
Never restart it to reposition. Pull off at the next sensible junction and switch off. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors, and mention it when you phone. It alters what we bring.

What our engineers do when we arrive with you around Milltimber
- Our engineers check what went in, how much, and if the motor has run. The replies change the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
- Away flows the tainted fuel.
- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
- Our technicians pour clean diesel in and prime the fuel system.
- After it's started, we confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.
From there, you are ready to set off. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.
A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Milltimber
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas the fault beneath it's a different one altogether. Petrol dilutes the diesel and strips the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.
Both are ours. There is a separate Milltimber page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
Milltimber pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain
Our technicians cannot put one figure on this page honestly, as the job is not one job. What changes it:
- This is the main one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Whether a technician can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.
The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.
Petrol in diesel: frequent questions in Milltimber
At a petrol station around Milltimber, can you do a fuel drain there?
A big share of this work happens there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there's possible.
A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been sucked through the system.
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?
Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what takes the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable much more regularly than motorists assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A drain and flush carried out properly is not a change and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. It belongs to a separate fault from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.
You, and the car, still together?
Leave the car switched off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than people expect.
