Petrol in Diesel

Minnigaff: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With that tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet turned over, almost every job takes only a drain, so keep the engine off. That result is settled in the minutes immediately after filling up, and not by the amount that went in. All over Minnigaff and the remainder of Dumfries and Galloway, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Call us and then our engineers will explain what comes after that before you attempt any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Don't crank it — and don't depend on it if it runs. This is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel typically just can't run, so the person stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, ticks over and pulls away perfectly well for a few miles. It is not all right. It's grinding that fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Switching your ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition be.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests — so do not pour diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has never shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and our team would sooner travel to a tricky place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Cumloden Road, switch those hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
  • Our van arriving rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode that starts DG8 6, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Have both prepared before you phone.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what got in, roughly how much, plus whether the motor has been run. The answers decide all that happens next.

Do not drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through the injection pump in real quantity on the drive in, and the trip back would roughly double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is okay. There is no need to stand over your BMW 3 Series outside the nearest station whilst the work happens, and our team would far rather hear from you tonight than realise on Monday.

Twenty to nine at the gates of the local primary school, running late, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, phone us. Three miles in the Peugeot 3008 feels like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — while a rushed morning dash asks for plenty.

Three replies determine much of the work: what went in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for those answers as soon as we reach your car in the car park outside Cree Inn. Next the contaminated blend comes out of your tank, the lines are cleaned, and where your Mercedes E-Class has a replaceable filter, it comes off. Once clean diesel is in and the fuel system primed, our technicians start the car and check it runs correctly before you set off.

Standing still, it gets no worse. Your pump isn't turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Bower Wood in that diesel Kia Sportage is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the engine to find more of it.

The pump rests before the injectors, so whatever a wearing one sheds travels on with your fuel — which is why we are direct about not driving on. Ring us, then leave your diesel Ford Fiesta where it's near War Memorial.

Draining petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

Forecourts are where this work usually starts, and where a fair part of it finishes. If you are still on the forecourt at Gulf, that's generally where this drain takes place — we operate on station forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement.

At a forecourt, it gets halted with your engine never fired, and no place else manages it. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key.

Staff will usually chip in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get by. Welcome the assistance. Cranking the car over four vehicle lengths? Never.

Places we cover near Minnigaff

Newton Stewart, Penkiln Mews, Creebridge, Challoch, Lamachan View — all of those on the runs that bring us over to Minnigaff itself, a residential suburb.

Our technicians do come. The places above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all locations around Dumfries and Galloway, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Call us and check rather than presuming — county lines particularly, and anywhere your phone may get wrong.

Use this map for the ground covered on this page. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is territory our technicians work on, and none of it asks the car to move to us.

Stranded by the kerbside near Minnigaff

The chance to pull over anywhere safe does not come to everyone. A routine call for us and not a rare one: worked out after setting off, landed on the verge of Burnside Court or at a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Sit with your car when it is sensible to be in it, yet clear of it when it's not. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere safer and that mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. However difficult the place, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for the car than pressing on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

This is where your A74(M) comes in — under 50 miles from Minnigaff. Lost power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Pull off at the first safe junction, turn off, and do not start it to reposition. On a longer drive — anything near the over 50 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors, and mention it when you phone. It alters what our engineers bring.

A bit about Minnigaff

Minnigaff is a suburban area situated on the banks of the River Cree in Dumfries and Galloway, with a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential properties. Minnigaff lies near the town of Newton Stewart and is close to other nearby places such as Penkiln Mews and Creebridge. Minnigaff has a population of around 1142 people and is located at a relatively low elevation of 15 metres above sea level. Minnigaff is also within commuting distance of the city of Carlisle, which is approximately 61 miles away.

The job in Minnigaff, step by step

  • Our engineers check what was put in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.
  • We clear your tank of the contaminated fuel.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.
  • We put new diesel in and prime the system.
  • Your engine is turned on and checked to be sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

After that it's ready to pull away. All of this is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, permanent damage is very unusual.

Minnigaff AdBlue removal is a different problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the motor remains off — while the problem underneath it's a separate one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the protection the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Minnigaff page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Minnigaff

One number wouldn't be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there sensibly?

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. If it isn't pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions around Minnigaff

I am on a forecourt in Minnigaff. Can you drain it on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this takes place. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. What determines how much work is needed is if that blend has been sucked through your fuel system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more commonly than motorists fear.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to bring it to a main dealer, since we drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Is the car still with you?

Never turn it back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car later on. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than people expect.
