Mobwell: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
If you have not started the engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor needs while the fuel is still in that tank and the motor has not yet been started, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has ended up in Mobwell or the rest of Buckinghamshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. Call us and then we will tell you what comes next before you try anything else.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order
- Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear. That's why you never crank it, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the point drivers get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically can't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you carry on.
- Leave the ignition off too. Diesel performs two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it lubricates your injection pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is commonly enough to prime your system, which pulls that petrol out of the tank and into exactly those parts.
- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It does not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
- We would rather travel to a tricky location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to sort than a car that has never moved. On the verge on Link Road, that means hazards on and leave it.
- Before you ring, have your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts HP16 9 — that is what settles whether our van shows up or circles.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, approximately how much, and if the motor has started. These three replies determine the full job.
Can petrol be pumped from a diesel at the forecourt?
Forecourts are where this work usually begins, and where a large share of it closes. Our technicians work on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's permission, so if you're still at the nearest petrol station that is generally where the drain takes place.
At a forecourt, the mistake is caught with the motor never run, and no place else does it. The few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for your key decide how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still sort it out where the car stands.
Attendants will generally help out pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Take the help. Cranking the car just to move four car lengths isn't.
How much fuel your pump has drawn is what we are really asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the call our technicians want runs like this: diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now turned off at The Co-operative Food.
Your diesel Nissan Qashqai will have felt completely ordinary on the way back from Great Missenden CofE Combined School. They do, and that's the trap with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it generally will not run, and so the person stops and the harm stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, idles and drives off as though nothing has happened — all while the high-pressure fuel pump keeps working without the protection your fuel is meant to be providing. Nothing warns you, as from the driver's seat there is nothing to warn you about. Call us with about how far you travelled and how hard you drove it; the second one matters more than the first.
Stop somewhere safe, switch off then call us. Happy on the way out to Buryfield Recreation Ground, flat on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol weakens diesel; runnier fuel leaks past the precision components that build injection pressure; and the further your diesel Ford Focus went, the less of that pressure it held.
Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a share, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres waiting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger mix rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost nobody knows how full your tank was in a vehicle picked up two days ago, and we work that out on site. Do phone the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to authorise the work, and that is far faster settled before than after. Then phone us about the Mercedes E-Class near Immaculate Heart of Mary.
That deadness is the fuel failing to build pressure correctly, not the motor packing up — and with no warning light for it, cars in that position normally get driven once more before anyone phones. Don't. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone dead, idle turned ragged, and a diesel BMW 5 Series now sitting near Great Missenden Community Library. Turn the car off then phone us.
Parts our team reach near Mobwell
As a small village, Mobwell gets a routine visit, while the places close by come with it on that same round: Great Missenden and South Heath, Little Wood Corner and Hotley Bottom, Prestwood.
There are pages for most places across Buckinghamshire, and the ones named above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off that list tells you nothing at all about if we come. Presuming is the mistake to avoid, especially on a boundary or anywhere the satnav gets lost. Phone to ask.
Check this map for the area included on this page. Every bit of it is ground our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never move the car anywhere.
Stuck by the roadside near Mobwell
Not everybody gets a suitable spot to pull over. A normal call for us rather than a rare one: realised after setting off, finished up by the verge of Walnut Close or at a lay-by with the hazards going.
Sit beside your car while it's wise to sit in it, but clear of it when it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. However awkward the place, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that is far better for the car than pressing on.
So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles
This is where the M40 comes in, under 10 miles from Mobwell. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle gets uneven, and there may be smoke.
The next safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long drive? Anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it affects what goes in the van.

What our technicians do when our technicians arrive with you in Mobwell
- Our technicians check what was put in, how much, and if your motor has run. The replies change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.
- We clear your tank of all the tainted fuel.
- Our technicians purge your fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what's remaining in the fuel system isn't what created the issue.
- Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
- The motor is turned on and checked to make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.
At that point it is ready to set off. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and as all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a workshop.
AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Mobwell?
The issue is not the same, though the first instruction is — never crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection the fuel system depends on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.
Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal around Mobwell has its own page with the details — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Mobwell
What changes the figure is listed below, because this job isn't one job and we cannot honestly put a single figure on this page.
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much that tank takes.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?
Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.
Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Mobwell
I am on a forecourt in Mobwell. Can you drain the vehicle here?
A good share of this work takes place there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the site's permission our engineers attend Harvest Energy and the other forecourts locally all the time.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Whether your engine has run matters far more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. What determines how much work is needed is if that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that's the question.
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?
Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more commonly than drivers assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. The pump still has to cope with it, as your tank still has petrol in it later.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?
Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.
Still with your car?
Keep the car turned off.
If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off. A parked, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than drivers fear.
