Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Moncreiffe

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across Moncreiffe and the remainder of Perth and Kinross. The first thing to do is not to start the engine. When the engine has not yet been started and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much got in. We can show you what the next part will be. Ring us — it goes before anything else.

The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Never start it. Turned on anyway? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car normally will not run, so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away normally, for several miles. Motorists get that backwards. It's not all right — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition remains off too — flick it on and you frequently prime that system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for exactly those parts.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • We would rather drive to a difficult place than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to handle than a vehicle that has not moved. On the verge on Glenlyon Road, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.
  • Before you ring, gather your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning PH2 0 — that's what decides whether the van turns up or circles.
  • What went in, about how much, and also if the motor has run — those three facts shape your whole visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Running it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has pushed real quantity through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return journey would more or less double the figure to no gain. The Renault Megane can wait outside Perth perfectly safely. Call from the platform if handier; standing over us while we work isn't needed.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, so have both prepared. The Audi A4 will have seemed perfectly normal on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that is the catch. Diesel into a petrol motor mostly won't run at all: the driver stops, and so does the damage. Petrol into a diesel starts, idles, drives off like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, as behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

What our technicians will ask about is if that run there was short and chilly, since that is where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and whatever doesn't burn can work past the rings then into the oil. Right up to the moment someone takes it home, a diesel Mercedes C-Class sitting in the parking area at The Abbotsford carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing degrades as it stands, so park the vehicle there overnight and call us next morning.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not only burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built leaks past clearances instead, leaving the motor a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was built about. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it passes through — that's the whole process. It accounts for the ordinary South Inch call too: a diesel Dacia Duster that travelled out without complaint and came back down on power, rough at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is the motor failing, and that's the part worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

Unfamiliar locations are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical instead of sloppy: the slimmer petrol nozzle slides into a current diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Fuelled up near Moncrieffe Parish Church without thinking, in a diesel BMW 1 Series you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anybody spots it, and miles is what decides how much petrol reaches your injectors.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Moncreiffe

Can petrol be taken from your diesel at a forecourt?

The job starts at a pump, typically. Quite often it wraps up there too. We work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement, so if you're still at Shell that's typically where the drain happens.

At a forecourt, it is halted with the engine never fired, and no place else does it. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where it is. It does mean your lines and your filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key.

Attendants will generally help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get by. Accept the assistance. Cranking the car just to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

Can our engineers cover your corner of Moncreiffe?

The same rounds bring us to Upper Craigie, Friarton, Craigie, Scoonieburn and Barnhill along with Moncreiffe, which is a residential suburb.

Not on that list? It tells you nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and nearly all towns around Perth and Kinross have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Guessing is the thing to resist, particularly on the boundary or anywhere the satnav struggles. Contact us and enquire.

That map outlines the ground this page spans. All of that is territory we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not move the car anywhere.

Moncreiffe: broken down where you pulled up

Not everyone gets a decent spot to pull over. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Nursery Terrace since you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Out of the car when it's not wise to sit there, by it if it is. Don't start it up to reach a nicer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the blend deeper into the fuel system. A technician coming to a tricky spot is no bother for us, and it's far better for the vehicle than driving on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

This is where the local M90 comes in, under a mile out of Moncreiffe. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they appear are typically lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a clean stop.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under a mile to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you ring. What we bring changes.

All about Moncreiffe

Moncreiffe is a suburban area located on the River Tay in Perth and Kinross, with a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential properties. Moncreiffe sits at a low elevation of around 14 metres, close to the city of Perth and near neighbouring areas like Upper Craigie and Friarton. Moncreiffe is part of the wider Perth urban area, with the city centre just under a mile away. Moncreiffe has a population of approximately 3617 people, living in a range of housing types, predominantly semi-detached homes.

What happens when our technicians arrive with you around Moncreiffe

  • Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • The polluted fuel is drawn out of the tank.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on isn't the thing that caused the trouble.
  • We pour new diesel in and prime the system.
  • When it is fired up, our engineers make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you are ready to pull away. All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, permanent damage is very rare.

A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Moncreiffe

The problem isn't the same, though the first step is — don't start it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Moncreiffe page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Moncreiffe prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Honestly, no single price fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here's what changes it:

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much that tank holds.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and whether a technician can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range. For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Moncreiffe

At a petrol station in Moncreiffe, can you do a fuel drain there?

A large portion of this work happens there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the engine has run matters far more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mix pulled through it.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving moves the problem along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct issue and it does not put back what petrol has weakened. That tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Never switch it back on.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, turn it off and leave it off. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
