Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Moneyhill? Don't Start It

Never turn on the motor. While the petrol is still in your tank and the motor has not yet been started, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that is decided in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, all over Moneyhill and the rest of Hertfordshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Contact us and then our team can tell you what comes next before you try any more.

The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't crank it. And having started, never rely on it: your fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition be too. Diesel does two tasks: it burns, and before it combusts it greases the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, which moves this petrol out of your tank and into just those parts.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has never shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and we would rather travel to an awkward location than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Field Way, turn the hazards on then leave the vehicle there.
  • Before you ring, work out your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting WD3 7 — that's what settles whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Three answers decide the full call-out: the fuel you poured in, the approximate measure of it, and if it has been going since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

The trip back would about double it, for no gain at all. One commute has already sent a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of that Renault Clio. So leave the car where it is. Phone us from the platform if that is simpler — nobody needs you hovering over the car outside Rickmansworth whilst our engineers get on, and tonight trumps finding out on Monday.

Straightforward, these ones, and the reason is the distance: a mile at light throttle draws very little of it. Petrol into a diesel Skoda Octavia somewhere around Moneyhill, a boot loaded with shopping, and you sat outside Tesco — ring us. Exiting the space is not worth another start. That tank gets emptied where it stands, the lines flushed, fresh diesel in, and you get home.

The pump is not turning, so whatever your diesel Audi A4 did on the way to St Peters School Playing Fields, none of it is happening now. Nothing is getting worse while it sits. Take your time over this — but never drive the car home to buy any.

Leave the Ford Focus near Mill End Baptist Church and phone us. We're direct about not driving on because a worn pump loses, and what it sheds travels onward with your fuel to your injectors downstream.

Drain it then put fresh diesel in — that is the tip you will get, typically from someone certain, and it's only half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Citroen C3 near St John's Church and it would start, which is what makes the advice sound reasonable. What occurs next is the issue: the motor at once draws the petrol still sitting in the filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead. We flush the circuit and take the filter off where the vehicle has a working one, which is the difference between your car being fixed and your car simply starting.

On the forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

It begins at a forecourt, generally. Quite often it finishes on site too. Still at BP? Then that's typically where it gets done. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the station.

Nowhere except a forecourt can it be stopped with the motor still cold. Our technicians can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to reach past your tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for your key are what decide that.

Staff will usually pitch in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get by. Accept the offer. Cranking it just to roll four car lengths is not.

Will we serve your side of Moneyhill?

Moneyhill is a residential suburb, and our technicians are out to the town and to the places by it on the usual journeys: Mill End, Rickmansworth, Batchworth, Maple Cross and Heronsgate.

Our technicians still come. The places above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of towns around Hertfordshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Ring us to check instead of assuming, above all when you're on the boundary or somewhere the satnav misreads.

This map outlines the patch the page spans. All of that is territory we serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't bring your vehicle anywhere.

Stranded at the roadside near Moneyhill

Not everyone has the opportunity to stop somewhere safe. If you realised after setting off and ended up by the verge of Mount View, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights flashing, that's a common call for us instead of a rare one.

Stay beside the car if it is wise to sit in it, yet out of the car when it is not. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere better and the blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. We'll take our van to a difficult location without any bother, and for the car that's a lot better than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, but your car has travelled

The M25 is the one which matters now, and sits under a mile from Moneyhill. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Pull off at the first sensible exit, switch off, and don't start it to reposition. Assume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our engineers bring differs.

All about Moneyhill

Moneyhill is a suburban area in Hertfordshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 53 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Moneyhill lies near the towns of Rickmansworth and St Albans, and is also close to the smaller communities of Mill End and Batchworth. Moneyhill is located approximately 17.8 miles from London, making it a commuter base for people working in the capital. Moneyhill has a population of around 5178 residents.

What follows when our engineers get to you in Moneyhill

  • We ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your engine run? Those replies shape what the work actually is.
  • The polluted fuel is pulled out of your tank.
  • Our technicians rinse the lines and clean the filter, and so what's left in the system is not what created the trouble.
  • We put clean diesel in and prime your system.
  • The motor is started and checked to be sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted soon, and as all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a garage.

Moneyhill AdBlue removal is a distinct job

Do not start it: that first instruction applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Moneyhill page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Moneyhill

What moves the price is listed below, since the job is not one job and our engineers cannot frankly put a single figure on this page.

  • Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a van.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around Moneyhill

Fuel drains on a Moneyhill petrol station forecourt

Much of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if we can work there. With the owner's consent our engineers work at Esso and the other forecourts around town all the time.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been pulled through your fuel system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It's recoverable much more commonly than drivers assume, even though driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to remain off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate issue. So no. The pump still has to put up with it, since your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

The motor stays off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it after that. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.
