Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Monmouth? Don't Start It
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Monmouth and the rest of Monmouthshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When your engine has not run and the petrol is still in that tank, a drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much went in. Our engineers will show you what the following step is. Phone — this comes ahead of everything else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try next
- Do not fire it up. Fired up all the same? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car normally can't run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off fine, for several miles. Drivers get that backwards. It is not all right — that fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
- Leave the car's ignition alone too. Diesel has two tasks: it ignites, and before it combusts it greases that high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking the ignition on is often enough to prime your system, which draws the petrol out of that tank and into exactly those components.
- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
- Sit tight if it is safe to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on St. James' Square, anywhere — a tricky place for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a motor that never moved.
- Our van turning up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode that starts NP25 3, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Have both ready before you phone.
- Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, roughly how much, and if your car has run. Those three answers determine your whole job.
Can petrol be taken from a diesel on the forecourt?
The work starts at a pump, typically. Regularly it ends at one as well. If you are still at the forecourt at Shell, that's usually where the drain happens — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's permission.
A forecourt is the only location this is caught before your motor has run. The few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for your key determine how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter need rinsing as well as the tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where the vehicle stands.
Clear of the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you push the vehicle. Very much worth it. Firing the car for four car lengths? Don't.
Simple, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at gentle throttle draws hardly any diesel. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane somewhere in Monmouth, a boot loaded with shopping, and you stuck at Lidl — ring us. Getting out of the spot is never worth another start. The tank gets drained where it waits, your fuel lines cleaned, new diesel in, and you drive away.
Every restart primes your lines and pulls more petrol through the fuel filter then into your pump. So a misfuelled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags by Redbrook Church of England Primary School is a hassle, whereas the same motor started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system and not a tank. Somebody will urge you to shift the vehicle out of the gateway and fix it later. Don't. Leave it there, let people complain, and give us a call.
Leave it there overnight. Call us next morning. Nothing about a diesel BMW 3 Series parked in the parking area outside Old Nags Head degrades whilst it waits, tank of petrol or not, and this job stays a simple one right up until the moment it gets taken home. The query our technicians arrive with is about that run there: a cold engine over a short run is where petrol combusts least well, and whatever fails to burn can find its way past the rings into the engine oil.
Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol dilutes diesel, and weaker fuel leaks past the close-fitting components that are supposed to build that pressure, so the further a diesel Nissan Qashqai drove, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and sluggish on the way back is how the trip to Chippenham Park went, then, and that tank is the place to look. Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off and ring us.
Leave the Dacia Duster by Monmouth War Memorial then ring us. We are firm about not driving on as a wearing pump loses, and what it gives off moves onward with your fuel to your injectors downstream.
Parts our vans cover in Monmouth
As a riverside town, Monmouth gets a steady call, and its neighbours nearby come with it on the same run: Chippenham and May Hill, Wyesham and Over Monnow, Dixton.
There are pages for the majority of towns around Monmouthshire, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from this list tells you nothing about if we come. Call us and check rather than assuming, especially if you are on the border or anywhere your phone struggles with.
Look at our map for the ground shown here. Your vehicle does not need to come to us. We operate throughout every bit of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Kerbside stops in Monmouth
Not everyone gets the opportunity to pull in anywhere sensible. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up on the verge on Cwrt William Jones, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that's a normal call for us rather than an odd one.
Whether you remain with the car or keep clear of it rests on if staying in it feels wise. Don't start up the motor to nurse the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mixture further into the fuel system. However inconvenient the location, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for the vehicle than pressing on.
Driven it already? Pull over, and see this
Here is where your M50 comes into it — under 15 miles away from Monmouth. A loss of power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.
The next safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you call. What our engineers bring alters.
All about Monmouth
Monmouth is a town situated on the River Monnow in southeastern Wales, with a population of around 8435 people. Monmouth sits at an elevation of 24 metres, close to the English border and near the towns of Chippenham and Hereford. Monmouth has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are particularly prevalent. Monmouth is located near notable landmarks such as May Hill and the village of Wyesham.
What follows when our technicians arrive with you in Monmouth
- Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
- Away comes the contaminated mixture.
- What is remaining in the system should not be what caused the issue, and so the fuel lines get flushed and your filter cleared.
- Our engineers put new diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
- It's fired up with new diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running correctly.
The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. Our engineers do all of this wherever your car has stopped, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been spotted quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.
AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Monmouth?
If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is unchanged — don't fire it up — yet the issue isn't. Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the protection the fuel system relies on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.
Both are ours. There's a separate Monmouth page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
Monmouth prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
Our engineers can't put one price on this page truthfully, as this job is not one job. What shifts it:
- This is the key one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there safely?
Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer rather than a range. If it isn't time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Petrol in diesel queries from Monmouth drivers
At a petrol station around Monmouth, can you do a fuel drain there?
Yes — forecourts are where a fair portion of this takes place. We visit Applegreen and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the site's permission — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Whether your engine has run counts much more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been sucked through your fuel system.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?
Stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and leave the car off. It's recoverable far more regularly than people expect, even though driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A drain and flush carried out correctly is not an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?
Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.
Is the vehicle still with you?
Do not turn the car on again.
Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
