Petrol in Diesel

Moor End: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across Moor End and the rest of Bedfordshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When the motor has not yet turned over and the fuel is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Just one ring to us is enough: our engineers shall explain what comes after this. Do it right away.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a few miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't crank it. And once started, don't trust it: the fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition be also. Diesel has two jobs: it combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates your high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is commonly enough to prime the system, which carries that petrol out of the tank and into just those parts.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel poured on top takes out nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Stay put if it is safe to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Moor End Lane, anywhere — a tricky location for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a motor that never shifted.
  • Get your whereabouts ready before you ring. A postcode beginning LU6 2 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van showing up and the van circling.
  • Three facts decide the whole job: the liquid you tipped in, the ballpark amount involved, and whether it has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Clearing petrol from your diesel at the forecourt

A big share of this work ends up done at a forecourt, since that's where it usually starts. We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent, and so if you are still at BP that's normally where this drain takes place.

At the forecourt, the mistake gets stopped with your engine never started, and no place else manages it. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where it is. It does mean the lines and your filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key.

The attendants will usually help you roll the car away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. That's worth doing. Shifting the car four spaces does not merit cranking the engine.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Moor End

Service near Moor End

As a residential suburb, Moor End gets a regular call, and the areas round about go along on that same run: Eaton Bray and Edlesborough, Church End and Honeywick, Northall.

Not on that list? It tells you nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and nearly all locations in Bedfordshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Call us and check instead of assuming — borders especially, and anywhere a satnav can get wrong.

Check this map for the patch shown on this page. The lot is ground we work: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not bring the vehicle anywhere.

Twenty to nine. By Eaton Bray Academy. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand says unleaded. Turn your hazards on, leave the engine alone, and call us. You could think three miles is nothing, in your BMW 3 Series or anything else — except that fuel is delivered on demand, and a run taken in a rush demands a great deal of it.

The components that should be getting lubricated are wearing down instead, and the vehicle gives no sign of that: a diesel on a diluted tank fires up and pulls away quite happily. Chance the drive home from The White Horse? Not a chance. Ring us then leave the Audi A4 where it sits.

Your pump waits before the injectors, so whatever a worn one gives off travels on with the fuel — which is why we are blunt about not driving on. Ring us, then leave your diesel Vauxhall Astra where it is close to Saint Mary the Virgin.

The narrower petrol nozzle fits a newer diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical instead of slapdash. Strange places see most of it for that reason. So: filled up close to Eaton Bray Village Hall without thinking, in a diesel Ford Kuga you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody realises, and mileage determines how much petrol ends up at the injectors.

A person sure of themselves will tell you to drain the vehicle and put fresh diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel Volvo XC60 by Saint Mary's and your engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here is the problem: there's petrol left in your filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the motor does is draw it back through your pump a second time. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Call us. The system gets cleaned, the filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that's what separates a repaired vehicle from one that just starts.

Moor End: stranded wherever you stopped

Not everybody gets a chance to stop somewhere safe. A routine call for us instead of an unusual one: realised after setting off, landed on the verge on Moor End or at a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Whether you wait with your car or stand away from it turns on whether staying there seems wise. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the problem: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere safer and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. Carrying on does the car far more harm than a technician driving out to a tricky place, and that is no problem for us.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

This is where the local M1 comes into it — under 10 miles from Moor End. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power drains away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Come off at the next safe junction, turn off, and never start it to reposition. It alters what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer run — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors.

Where's Moor End?

Moor End is a suburban area in Bedfordshire, situated near the riverside with an elevation of around 98 metres. Moor End lies within commuting distance of London, approximately 31.8 miles away, and is close to the nearby city of St Albans. Moor End is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock and is near other local places such as Eaton Bray and Edlesborough. Moor End has a population of around 1947 residents.

What comes next when our technicians get to you around Moor End

  • We ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses shape what the work really is.
  • The polluted mixture is pulled from the tank.
  • Our technicians rinse your fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, so what's left in the system isn't what started the problem.
  • We put fresh diesel in and bleed your system.
  • The motor is turned on and checked to be sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

After that it is ready to set off. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Moor End?

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — do not crank it — yet this issue isn't. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Moor End has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. Our technicians handle both.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Moor End

One price would not be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for our van.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Petrol in diesel questions from Moor End motorists

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Moor End?

Yes, and it's where a large share of this work gets done. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there's possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix pulled through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then keep it off. It is salvageable far more frequently than drivers expect, even though driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate issue and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

You, and the car, still together?

Do not turn it back on.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off. Cold and still, a car is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Across Bedfordshire and in Moor End: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
