Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Moorside

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Moorside and the rest of Tyne and Wear. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. When the motor has not turned over and the petrol is still in the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. One ring our way is sufficient: our technicians can explain what comes after this. Try this straight away.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it — and do not believe it if it runs. This is the part most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor fed diesel typically just will not run, and so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives away without complaint for a couple of miles. It's not all right. It's eating into the fuel system as you drive.
  • Leave your ignition off as well. Diesel does two jobs: it burns, and before it burns it protects the high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking the ignition on is often enough to prime that system, which pulls the petrol out of your tank and into just those components.
  • Do not tip diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies, and topping up removes nothing — it simply hands you a larger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has never moved is the easiest one to sort out, and we'd sooner drive to an odd spot than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Marcross Drive, switch those hazards on and keep the vehicle there.
  • Before you dial, work out your location. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts SR3 2 — that's what settles whether our van shows up or circles.
  • What went in, about how many litres, plus whether the engine has started — the three replies shape the whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Call us before you fetch the car. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane this morning, and it at Sunderland ever since? Then the wait has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is harmless, and any harm was done on the drive in, when your pump was pulling diesel that petrol had diluted.

Twenty to nine. By Benedict Biscop Church of England Academy. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand says unleaded. Switch the hazards on, leave the ignition alone, then phone us. You could think three miles is nothing, in your Ford Focus or anything else — except that fuel is delivered to demand, and a dash taken in a hurry asks for a great deal of that.

Three answers determine most of the work: what went in, approximately how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for them as soon as we arrive at the vehicle in the car park at The Colonel Prior. Next the polluted mix comes out of that tank, the fuel lines are rinsed, and where your Mercedes E-Class has a serviceable filter, it comes off. Once new diesel is in and the fuel system primed, our engineers fire it up and check it runs smoothly before you pull away.

Normal on the way out, flat on the way back. If that is how the run to Blakeney Woods went, that tank is where to look. Petrol thins diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the tightly fitted parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the farther the Vauxhall Astra drove, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere safe, turn off then call us.

Most of these occur somewhere strange, and the cause is mechanical not careless — almost no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel BMW X1, a fill-up by Sir Thomas Allen Centre that you didn't think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at the injectors.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Moorside

Can petrol be taken from your diesel on a forecourt?

It starts at the pump, usually. Regularly the job wraps up on site too. The drain normally takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Morrisons? Given the site's permission, that's a place our engineers work, and often.

The forecourt is the one place it gets stopped before the engine has run. We can still deal with it where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that drew fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to reach past that tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

Staff will normally help out pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get through. Welcome the offer. Shifting it four spaces doesn't warrant cranking it.

Parts our vans serve in Moorside

The same rounds carry us to Silksworth, Doxford Park, Sourmilk Hill, Farringdon and East Herrington besides Moorside, which is a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on this list that does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for most towns in Tyne and Wear, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours. Guessing is the mistake to skip, especially on a boundary or somewhere your satnav fails. Contact us and ask.

The map is the area the page spans. Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and the vehicle never needs to travel to us.

Stopped on the roadside anywhere around Moorside?

Some drivers have no suitable place to stop at all. Set off, then realised? Finished up along the verge of Doxford Park Way, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards on? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Safe where you are? Stay by it. Not fine? Move out and clear of it. Do not start it up to get to a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that blend deeper into the system. We will send the van to an awkward location without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is a lot better than carrying on.

Run it already? Pull in, then check this

under 5 miles from Moorside, your A1(M) is what counts now. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power ebbs away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Do not start it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible exit then switch off. Long trip? Anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in our van.

Where is Moorside?

Moorside is a suburban area located inland in Tyne and Wear, sitting at an elevation of 96 metres near the city of Sunderland. Moorside is situated approximately 3 miles from Sunderland and is close to nearby places such as Silksworth and Doxford Park. Moorside has a population of around 3147 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing. Moorside is part of the wider Sunderland urban area, with London being around 238 miles to the south.

What comes next when our engineers arrive with you in Moorside

  • Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Our engineers clear the tank of all the contaminated fuel.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • Once it is turned on, we make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. There is no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is noticed quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Moorside?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas the problem under it's a different one altogether. Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There's a separate Moorside page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Moorside?

One figure wouldn't be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • This is the big one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for a technician.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run. For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not time-critical, works too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Moorside drivers

I'm on a forecourt in Moorside. Can you drain it here?

Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there is possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It is fixable much more frequently than people fear, even though driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a modification and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to remain off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

Keep the engine turned off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and let it stay that way. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
