Mottram Rise: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up the engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a motor requires while the fuel is still in the tank and the engine has not yet run, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has come to rest in Mottram Rise or the rest of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Ring us before all else starts, and you'll see what happens after that.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Never fire it up. Turned on regardless? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol car normally will not run, and so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away normally, for several miles. Most people get that confused. It is not all right — your fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Switching the car's ignition on usually primes your system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition be.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage as that guidance implies — so never put diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We'd much rather come to an odd spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is easier to handle than a motor that hasn't moved. On the verge on Stalyhill Drive, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts SK15 2, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than showing up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what got in, about how many litres, plus if the car has been run. Your responses determine everything that follows.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

It kicks off at the pump, usually. Frequently it wraps up at one as well. The drain generally happens right there. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the site's permission, that's a spot our engineers work, and often.

A forecourt is the single setting it gets stopped before the motor has run. Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to go past that tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the keys are what settle that.

Push the car out of the way if the attendants offer, and they usually will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that's worth doing. Shifting the car four lengths does not warrant firing it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Mottram Rise

Car parks like the one at Co-op Food are a spot our engineers visit regularly, and the fuel is seldom the complicated part. The bay is: cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height bar on the way in that settles if our van can access you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you phone, and which way your car is facing. Where our technicians cannot work beside the diesel Skoda Octavia we'll move the car without firing it — and that is not fuss about a couple of seconds of running. Any start primes your fuel system and sucks more of that mix out of your tank and toward your pump, so a car shunted twice into a better spot has gradually grown into a bigger job than one left just where it stopped.

The components that should be getting oiled are wearing down instead, and the motor gives no sign of that: a diesel on a thinned tank starts and drives off quite happily. Chance the journey home from Waggon and Horses? Not a chance. Call us then leave the Mercedes C-Class where it sits.

Nothing gets worse while it sits. Whatever your diesel Peugeot 3008 did on the way to Cheetham Park, it's doing none of that now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but do not drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.

Why we're blunt about not driving on: the pump rests upstream of the injectors, and so whatever a worn-out pump gives off moves onward with your fuel. Leave the Audi A3 by Bower Fold and call us.

The fuel filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail: that's where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with that tank contents. So the tank is not where most of the problem rests by this point, and a diesel Vauxhall Astra that made it close to Saint Paul's Parish Church needs the system cleared rather than drained.

Mottram Rise plus the places near it

Mottram Rise is a residential suburb, and so our technicians are out to the town and to the places near it on the usual trips: Woodlands, Roe Cross, Matley, Lower Roe Cross and Bower Fold.

Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and most locations across Greater Manchester have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Presuming is the mistake to resist, above all on a border or anywhere the satnav fails. Ring us to enquire.

The map shows the patch this page includes. The lot is ground we work: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not move your car anywhere.

Mottram Rise: broken down where you pulled up

Not everybody gets a chance to stop anywhere suitable. If you realised after setting off and finished up by the verge of Rookery Close, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that's a routine call for us and not an unusual one.

Sit beside the motor if it's wise to be there, yet out of the vehicle if it's not. Never start it up to reach a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mixture deeper into the fuel system. We will bring our van to a difficult location without any fuss, and for the vehicle that's a lot better than driving on.

Driven it already? Stop, then check this

This is where your M67 comes in — under 3 miles away from Mottram Rise. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Get off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and do not start the car to move it. Long trip? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the mixture. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in the van.

Our visit in Mottram Rise, step by step

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Away comes the contaminated fuel.
  • We purge the lines and clean the filter, and so what's left in your system is not what caused the issue.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • We start the engine and confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been caught quickly, and as all of it is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Mottram Rise

The fault is not the same, though the opening instruction is — never start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. The protection a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and build-up.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Mottram Rise page. Both are ours to deal with.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Mottram Rise

Truthfully, no single number fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here is what changes it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much that tank holds.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

Mottram Rise motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Mottram Rise petrol station forecourt

A fair portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the site's agreement our technicians visit Shell and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your motor has run counts a lot more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is whether that blend has been drawn through the system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. It's salvageable much more often than drivers expect, even though driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate issue. So no. Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, since our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Don't turn it back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it after that. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than people fear.
