Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Mount Pleasant

If you have not started the engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car requires while the petrol is still sitting in the tank and your engine has not been started, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has ended up in Mount Pleasant or the rest of Buckinghamshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. Phone before everything else begins, and you'll know what follows next.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Never start the car. Turned on all the same? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally won't run, so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off fine, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that reversed. It is not fine — your fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it protects — the high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition alone too: flicking it on is usually enough to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into just those parts.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Our team would sooner come to a tricky location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to handle than a vehicle that has never shifted. On the verge on Embleton Way, that means hazards on then leave the car.
  • Get your whereabouts prepared before you dial. A postcode beginning MK18 1 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between our van turning up and our van circling.
  • Three facts decide the entire call-out: the stuff you tipped in, the ballpark volume of it, and if anything has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Nothing about the time since has lost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is dormant, and so a diesel Renault Megane parked outside Bicester North this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pulled diluted diesel through your pump was the trip in. Phone before you set off to collect it.

Petrol in the BMW 3 Series, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you at Aldi, somewhere in Mount Pleasant? Then phone, and leave your engine out of it — not even to exit that spot. Somebody comes out to you. Tank cleared, fuel lines purged, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Light throttle over a mile draws very little, and so these tend to be the simple cases.

You drive off at the end, once our engineers have fired it up and checked it runs properly on clean diesel, with the system primed. Before that, in the car park outside The Mitre, the polluted fuel comes out of your tank, the fuel lines get flushed and the filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. It all starts with three questions when we get to the vehicle: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

The narrower petrol nozzle slides into a newer diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical rather than careless. Strange locations see most of that for that reason. So: topped up near University Library without thinking, in a diesel Citroen C3 you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone realises, and miles settles how much petrol ends up at the injectors.

What happens next is the problem. The motor at once draws the petrol left resting in the filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put fresh diesel in, somebody certain will tell you — and that suggestion is half true, since do it to a diesel Volkswagen Polo parked up, St Rumbold's Well say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Phone us instead. We flush the system and take the filter off where your vehicle has a workable one, and that's the difference between the car being repaired and your car just starting.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Plenty of the job begins at a pump, meaning a fair portion of that ends up done on site. Still at Esso? Then that is usually where it happens. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the site.

Nowhere else other than a garage can this be caught with the engine still unrun. The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key settle how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where your car stands.

Roll the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they normally will. The next customer gets by the pump, and that's worth doing. Starting the car just for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

Coverage near Mount Pleasant

The same journeys take us to Buckingham, Stratford Fields, The Badgers, Linden Village and Lenborough along with Mount Pleasant, which is a residential suburb.

Our engineers still come. The places above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all places in Buckinghamshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Close to a boundary, or somewhere your phone struggles with? Phone to enquire instead of presuming.

See this map for the patch included on this page. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is territory our technicians work on, and none of that requires your vehicle to come to us.

Mount Pleasant: broken down where you parked

The chance to pull over somewhere safe doesn't come to everyone. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up along the verge on Bluebell Close, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a normal call for us and not an odd one.

Okay there? Wait with it. Not okay? Get out and away from it. Do not start it up to reach a safer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mixture deeper into the system. A van driving to a difficult location is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for the car than pressing on.

Driven it already? Pull in, then see below

Here is where the M40 comes in — under 10 miles from Mount Pleasant. Lost power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you ring. It changes what we bring.

What we do when our engineers reach you around Mount Pleasant

  • The answers change the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what went in, how much of that, and if your engine has run.
  • The contaminated mixture is pulled out of your tank.
  • We clean the lines and clear the filter, and so what's left in your system isn't what caused the problem.
  • Our technicians pour fresh diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • Our technicians start it and confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. There is no need to go to a garage at any point, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Mount Pleasant is a separate job

Don't fire it up: that first rule holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this issue itself. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Mount Pleasant page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Mount Pleasant

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page frankly, since the job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely reach your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

Tell us the car, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Mount Pleasant drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Mount Pleasant petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this takes place. Our engineers attend W Ganderton & Son and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if we can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that blend has been sucked through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. It is fixable far more often than drivers assume, even though driving is what moves the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

Is the car still with you?

Don't turn your engine back on.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.

Across Buckinghamshire and around Mount Pleasant: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
