Mount Pleasant: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Mount Pleasant and the rest of Gloucestershire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When your engine has not turned over and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Contact us and then we will tell you what follows from here before you do much else.
Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order
- Never crank it — and don't rely on it if it starts. That is the thing motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just will not run, and so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, idles and drives away without complaint for a couple of miles. It's not all right. It is wearing out your fuel system as you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition stays off also — turn it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for just those parts.
- Do not water down it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
- We'd sooner come to an odd location than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is easier to handle than a motor that has never moved. On the verge on Woodlands Reach, that means hazards on and keep it.
- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning GL14 2, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three queries — what got in, about how much, and if your car has been run. Those answers decide whatever happens next.
Never take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through that injection pump in real quantity on the way in, and the way back would close to double that for nothing at all. Ring us — the platform is fine. There's no need to stand over your Volkswagen Golf at Lydney while the work happens, and our team would much rather hear from you tonight than learn on Monday.
How much fuel the pump has drawn is what we're really asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the call our engineers hope for sounds like this: diesel Renault Megane, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now switched off outside Tesco.
Standing still, it gets no worse. Your pump isn't turning, and so whatever happened on the way to Miners Welfare Playing Field in that diesel Ford Focus is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the motor to find more of it.
Three things help when you phone from close to Our Lady of Victories: which side the filler is on, whether our van can stand alongside without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common spot our engineers work, and so the location itself is rarely the problem — we would far rather deal with a cramped parking space than with a vehicle that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain the Dacia Duster, change the filter where there's a serviceable one, flush the fuel lines then put fresh fuel through the entire system, because by this point the worst of that is waiting in the lines rather than in the tank.
Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres waiting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger blend knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost nobody knows how full the tank was in a motor collected two days ago, and we work that out there. Do phone the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to sign off the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then call us about the Vauxhall Astra by St Stephen's Church.
Clearing petrol from the diesel at the forecourt
Pumps are where this work usually starts, and where a good part of it finishes. The drain normally gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at Shire Fuels? Given the owner's consent, that's a place our technicians work, and often.
A filling station is the one setting this gets caught before your motor has started. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and your lines along with your tank. That is still not a disaster, and our technicians sort it out where the vehicle stands. What decides it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.
Away from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the staff help you move the car. Very much worth it. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.
Service in Mount Pleasant
Double View, Cinderford, Littledean Hill, Littledean, Bilson Green — all of these on the rounds that carry us across to Mount Pleasant too, a residential suburb.
There are separate pages for most locations in Gloucestershire, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off the list tells you nothing at all about if we come. Near a boundary, or somewhere your satnav misreads? Contact us to ask rather than assuming.
This map outlines the patch the page covers. We work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and the vehicle doesn't need to move to us.
Mount Pleasant: stuck wherever you stopped
Not everybody finds a sensible spot to pull in. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Mousell Lane as you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call so often that it is the usual kind.
Wait by the motor while it is sensible to be in it, yet clear of the vehicle if it's not. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the catch: start it up to get to somewhere safer and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven. A van coming to a difficult place is no trouble for us, and it is far better for the vehicle than pressing on.
Petrol in a diesel, and your car has rolled
under 10 miles from Mount Pleasant, the M50 is what counts here. A misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are generally lost power, an uneven idle and smoke instead of a clean stop.
Pull off at the first sensible exit, switch off, and don't restart the car to move it. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors, and tell us when you phone. It alters what our engineers bring.

Once our technicians arrive with you in Mount Pleasant: what we do
- We ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers alter what the work really is.
- The tank gets emptied completely.
- Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that caused the issue.
- The fuel system gets primed, on new diesel.
- It's run with clean diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running smoothly.
Then it is ready to set off. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught early, lasting damage is very uncommon.
Mount Pleasant AdBlue removal is a different problem
The issue is not the same, though the first instruction is — never fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The protection a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.
Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Mount Pleasant page. Both are ours to handle.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Mount Pleasant
We can't put one figure on this page truthfully, because the job isn't one job. What moves it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much your tank takes.
- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for our van.
A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run. If it's not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Petrol in diesel queries from Mount Pleasant motorists
I am on a forecourt in Mount Pleasant. Can you drain the car on the spot?
Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Our technicians attend EG on the move and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Whether your motor has run matters much more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system.
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of your tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more commonly than motorists assume.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
No. Carried out correctly, clearing and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
There's no need to take it to a dealership, since we drain and flush the car wherever it is.
Still with the vehicle?
Keep the car shut off.
If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
