Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Mount Pleasant? Don't Start It
Do not start the motor. While the fuel is still inside the tank and your engine has not been started, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets determined in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, across Mount Pleasant and the remainder of Rhondda Cynon Taf, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Our engineers will tell you what the following step will be. Ring us — it happens ahead of anything else.
Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Never fire it up — and don't believe it if it runs. That is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel normally just can't run, so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, idles and drives away quite happily for several miles. It isn't fine. It's wearing out your fuel system whenever you drive.
- Diesel burns, and before it burns it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition be also: flicking it on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into exactly those parts.
- Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage as that advice suggests — so never pour diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
- We would sooner travel to an odd location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is easier to sort than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Cemetery Road, that means hazards on and keep the car.
- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode starting CF39 0, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what was put in, about how much, and whether the car has been run. Those answers decide everything that happens next.
Clearing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt
A large share of the job ends up completed at a pump, since that's where it usually starts. Still at Texaco? Then that's usually where it takes place. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the owner.
Before your motor has fired — the forecourt is the only location it gets halted. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key determine how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require flushing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where the car sits.
Move it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.
We're in car parks like the one outside Lidl a lot, and it's rarely your fuel that complicates them. It's that bay. Cars both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height limit at the way in, which determines if our van gets to you at all. So say how boxed in you are when you ring, and which way the vehicle is facing. If there's no space to work alongside the Volkswagen Passat, our engineers roll it without your engine. That isn't fussiness over a few seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of the tank toward your pump, and a vehicle moved twice for a better space is gradually a bigger job than one nobody touched.
A diesel pump delivers fuel on demand, and a hurried morning drive demands plenty — so three miles in the Peugeot 308 seems like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine at the gates of the local primary school, already late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, engine off, phone us.
A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not only burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built leaks past tolerances instead, leaving the engine a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered round. Petrol weakens diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the tightly fitted components it runs through — that is the whole process. It explains the usual Bronwydd Park call too: a diesel Audi A4 that travelled out without a murmur and came back down on power, rough at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is the motor failing, and that's the part worth hearing. The fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.
Rattling? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That's your wrongly fuelled Mercedes E-Class, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, perhaps by Cross of Sacrifice, then leave the restarting alone.
Your filter, your lines, the pump and its rail: that's where that mix is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with the tank contents. So the tank isn't where most of the problem sits by this point, and a diesel BMW 5 Series that got by William Evans needs the system cleared instead of drained.
Coverage around Mount Pleasant
These same rounds carry us to Birchgrove, Dinas, Porth, Ynyshir and Glynfach besides Mount Pleasant, which is a residential suburb.
If yours is not on this list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all towns across Rhondda Cynon Taf, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours. Guessing is the thing to skip, especially on a border or somewhere a satnav fails. Phone to check.
Use the map for the patch included on this page. Every bit of it is territory our technicians serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't move the car anywhere.
Stranded on the kerbside anywhere in Mount Pleasant?
Not everyone has a decent place to pull in. Set off, then twigged? Landed by the verge of Park Street, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That is a routine call here. Not an odd one.
Clear of the motor when it's not safe to sit in it, with it when it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. However awkward the place, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for your car than driving on.
Driven it already? Stop, and read below
under 10 miles out of Mount Pleasant, your M4 is what matters here. Lost power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.
The next safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you ring. It alters what our technicians bring.
Mount Pleasant itself
Mount Pleasant is a suburban area in Rhondda Cynon Taf, situated near the river and surrounded by other local communities such as Birchgrove and Dinas. Mount Pleasant sits at an elevation of 121 metres, with terraced housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Mount Pleasant is located near the town of Porth and is approximately 14 miles from Cardiff, the nearest city. Mount Pleasant is also relatively distant from London, at around 141 miles away.
What comes next when our technicians arrive with you in Mount Pleasant
- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those replies change what the work really is.
- The polluted fuel comes out of that tank.
- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.
- Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.
- After it's turned on, we check it runs correctly on clean diesel.
Your car is then ready for you to pull away. There is no need for a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught early, long-term damage is very rare.
AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Mount Pleasant?
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the motor stays off — while the issue under it is a distinct one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.
Both are ours. There is a separate Mount Pleasant page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Mount Pleasant
Frankly, no single number belongs on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what varies it:
- This is the main one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.
- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a van.
The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. If it's not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in Mount Pleasant
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Mount Pleasant?
A fair part of this work takes place there, so yes. We attend Shell and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the site's permission — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Whether the engine has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is whether that mix has been pulled through the system.
I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?
Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. It is salvageable far more regularly than motorists assume, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A drain and flush carried out properly is not an alteration and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
What petrol has diluted is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate problem. So no. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to cope with it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
There's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, as our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.
Waiting next to it?
Shut off is the way the car remains.
Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.
