Petrol in Diesel

Mount Pleasant: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor needs while the petrol is still in that tank and the engine has not turned over, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Mount Pleasant or the remainder of Shropshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Contact us so our engineers shall explain what happens next before you try much else.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't start it. Fired up all the same? Then never believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally won't run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for a few miles. Motorists get that confused. It's not fine — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Leave the car's ignition off also. Diesel performs two roles: it burns, and before it burns it protects that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime the system, which draws this petrol out of your tank then into exactly those components.
  • Never weaken it. Diesel poured on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • A motor that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort out, and so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Powis Drive? Hazards on, and leave the car there. An odd spot works for us better than a started engine.
  • Before you phone, get your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning SY1 3 — that's what settles whether the van arrives or circles.
  • Three answers determine the whole visit: the fuel you put in, the ballpark amount involved, and whether anything has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Do not drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through the high-pressure fuel pump in real volume on the trip in, and the way back would roughly double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is okay. There's no need to stand over that Volkswagen Passat at Shrewsbury whilst the work goes on, and we'd much rather talk to you tonight than realise on Monday.

How much fuel your pump has pulled is what we are really asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the enquiry our technicians like goes like this: diesel Renault Clio, some litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now turned off outside Morrisons.

Here's what a job in the car park outside The Steam Wagon usually looks like. We get to your car, ask what went in, approximately how much, and whether your engine has run since — those three replies settle most of the work. Then the contaminated blend comes out of that tank, your lines get rinsed, and the fuel filter comes off where your BMW 3 Series has a replaceable one. New diesel goes in and the fuel system is primed. Then our technicians fire it up, confirm it runs smoothly, and you pull away.

Knocking, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That is a wrongly fuelled diesel Mercedes C-Class telling you what's wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, by The Grange Centre or anywhere else, and do not restart it to find a better place.

That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure properly, not your engine packing up — and with no warning for it, vehicles in that position normally get driven once more before anybody phones. Do not. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Ford Kuga now waiting close to Emmanuel. Switch the car off and ring us.

At a forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

A good part of this job gets done at the pump, as that is where it mostly starts. Still at Morrisons? Then that is normally where it gets done. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the station.

Nowhere other than a garage can it be stopped with the engine still unstarted. We can still sort it out where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that drew fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to go past that tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key are what determine that.

The staff will usually happily move it clear of the pump so the next customer can get through. It is worth doing. Shifting it four bays doesn't merit cranking it.

Mount Pleasant plus the places next to it

The same journeys get us to Ditherington, Heathgates, Spring Gardens, Greenfields and Harlescott as well as Mount Pleasant, which is a residential suburb.

Our engineers do come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all locations across Shropshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Call us to enquire rather than guessing — boundaries above all, and wherever your satnav may misread.

The map shows the ground the page covers. We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and the vehicle never needs to move to us.

Kerbside breakdowns across Mount Pleasant

Some drivers have no sensible spot to pull in whatsoever. Set off, then noticed? Landed on the verge of Whitemere Road, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a common call here. Not an odd one.

Safe there? Sit with it. Not fine? Move out and clear of it. Do not start it up to get to a nicer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into your fuel system. We will bring our van to a difficult spot without any trouble, and for the car that is much better than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, but your car has rolled

This is where the M54 comes into it — under 10 miles away from Mount Pleasant. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Never start it to move it. Come off at the next safe junction then turn off. On a longer drive — anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors, and mention it when you phone. It alters what our engineers bring.

About Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant is a suburban area in Shropshire, situated inland at an elevation of 63 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Mount Pleasant lies near several other local neighbourhoods, including Ditherington, Heathgates, and Spring Gardens, and is approximately 24.5 miles from the city of Wrexham. Mount Pleasant has a population of around 5299 residents, and its location in the West Midlands region places it about 139.3 miles from London.

Our call-out around Mount Pleasant, step by step

  • The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of that, and if your motor has run.
  • Your tank is cleared completely.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what created the trouble, and so the fuel lines get cleaned and your filter cleared.
  • The system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • After it's fired up, we check it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to drive away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been caught quickly, and since all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Mount Pleasant

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is the same — do not fire it up — but this issue isn't. The protection a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Mount Pleasant page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Mount Pleasant

What moves the price is laid out below, since the job isn't one job and we can't honestly put a single figure on this page.

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a technician.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Petrol in diesel questions from Mount Pleasant motorists

At a petrol station around Mount Pleasant, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good share of this work happens there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the station's consent our technicians visit Esso and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your motor has run counts a lot more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more regularly than drivers assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened. That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to take it to a dealership, because our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

Still with the vehicle?

Never switch your engine on again.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and let the car remain that way. This is recoverable from much more commonly than people expect, and a still, cold car is the best place to be in.

Throughout Shropshire and around Mount Pleasant: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
