Petrol in Diesel

Mount Pleasant: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never start your engine. While the fuel is still in that tank and your engine has not turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets determined in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, across Mount Pleasant and the rest of Staffordshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Our engineers can tell you what the next stage is. Ring us — it happens before everything else.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine for several miles. People have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not fire it up. And having started, do not depend on it: the fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off also — flick it on and you often prime your system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for exactly those components.
  • Do not dilute it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to handle, so remain where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on New Street? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. A tricky location works for us better than a started motor.
  • The van turning up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode starting ST14 7, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Get both prepared before you phone.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what got in, about how much, and if the car has been started. Your replies settle whatever comes after.

The drive in is what pulled thinned diesel through the pump. Sitting still has pulled nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, parked at Uttoxeter all day, rests inert in your tank whilst it waits. Phone first — before the keys come out.

Hazards on. Engine off. Ring us. It is twenty to nine by Picknalls First School, you're late, and your receipt reads unleaded — and even though three miles in the Ford Focus seems like nothing, fuel is metered to demand, and a frantic drive asks for plenty of that.

The components that should be getting lubricated are wearing down instead, and your car gives no sign of it: a diesel on a thinned tank fires up and moves off quite happily. Try the drive home from Black Dog Jazz Cafe? Don't. Call us then leave the Mercedes C-Class where it sits.

Turn off where you have stopped, and don't start it to find somewhere better — near Uttoxeter Leisure Centre or anywhere at all. Knocking, an uneven idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel Audi A6 telling you what's wrong.

By this point the tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, that mixture is in your filter, your lines, the pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Citroen C4 Picasso that got near Redfern Cottage needs the system cleared, not emptied.

Forecourts are where the work often starts, and where a good chunk of it finishes. Still at Tesco? Then that's normally where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the station.

Before your motor has fired — a forecourt is the only place the mistake gets halted. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still put it right where it sits. It does mean your lines and your filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys.

Attendants will normally pitch in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Accept the assistance. Rolling the car four spaces does not merit cranking it.

Mount Pleasant and the areas beside it

Uttoxeter, The Wharf, Balance Hill, The Heath, Blounts Green — every one of them on the rounds that take us over to Mount Pleasant itself, a residential suburb.

There are pages for the majority of places in Staffordshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off that list says nothing at all about if we come. Phone and ask instead of guessing — boundaries above all, and anywhere your phone may misread.

The map shows the ground the page includes. Every bit of it is territory we serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never bring your car anywhere.

Stranded at the kerbside somewhere around Mount Pleasant?

Some drivers get no safe spot to pull in whatsoever. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Colne Mount since you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Safe there? Sit beside it. Not okay? Climb out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However difficult the location, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is much better for the car than carrying on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

The local M6 is the road that counts here, and it lies under 15 miles from Mount Pleasant. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the next junction that is sensible, pull up there, and don't restart the vehicle to move it. On a longer run — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors, and tell us when you ring. It affects what we bring.

Mount Pleasant itself

The call-out in Mount Pleasant, step by step

  • The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what went in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.
  • Away flows the contaminated fuel.
  • Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that caused the problem.
  • Our engineers pour fresh diesel in and prime the system.
  • When it's turned on, our technicians confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.

At that point it is ready to pull away. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed early, and since all of it is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Mount Pleasant?

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is unchanged — don't crank it — yet the problem is not. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and deposits instead.

Both are ours. There's a separate Mount Pleasant page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Mount Pleasant

What changes the price is laid out below, as this job isn't one job and we can't honestly put a single number on this page.

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely get to your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the car is.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel: common questions around Mount Pleasant

At a petrol station around Mount Pleasant, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this happens. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there. With the site's consent our engineers attend Esso and the other forecourts around town regularly.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether the motor has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been sucked through the system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving takes the trouble along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to remain off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to take it to a dealership, because our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

You, and your car, still together?

The motor stays off.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
