Petrol in a Diesel Car in Mount Wise: What Happens Now

Not for a moment, and not for moving it: the engine stays off. Pause there. Drained and cleaned, right where it is: that is usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it stays that straightforward depends on the minutes ahead more than on everything else. Below is the sequence from here, wherever around Mount Wise you are.

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

Before anything else, these — following this sequence.

  • The ignition off, keys out. Switched on, the ignition can prime your system — and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank towards the parts it damages.
  • No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of the petrol — it just makes you with more of the same mixture.
  • Hazards on. If you're anywhere near moving traffic, make the vehicle easy to see before you do anything else.
  • By hand, never on the engine: that's how it leaves the pump. Ask the forecourt attendants to help you push, however short the distance.
  • Which fuel, and roughly how much? The receipt replies that, and that is where our first question starts. Don't bin it.

On the M5, under 50 miles from Mount Wise, the next exit is the spot to leave the car; elsewhere, the first safe spot to stop. Don't press on to the services. Then go back to step one.

Has it run yet? The fork in every Mount Wise fuel drain

What comes next turns on one answer, and only one.

Not run, not even briefly:

  • Just the tank has petrol in it so far.
  • A drain and flush, on the spot, is usually all of it.
  • Being here is the best case — which is the whole point of step one.

If the engine has been run, even for a moment:

  • Petrol has been drawn out of the tank, through the filter then into the lines.
  • On a longer run it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump as well as the fuel injectors.
  • The farther it went, the bigger the job — the lines, the fuel filter, and now and then more besides.

The line falls there since diesel protects the high-pressure pump and the injectors on its way through them — and petrol doesn't. A tank of petrol, left alone, damages nothing. As soon as it's pumped, petrol begins grinding whatever moves it.

What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from Mount Wise

A technician that circles versus a van that finds you: a little preparation is what separates them.

  • PL1 4 plus the remainder of the postcode is the best way to start telling us where you are.
  • Name the road — Garrison Close or wherever you have stopped — or the car park.
  • Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside Co-op Food, for instance — and it is much easier to find.
  • The make and model of your car, and the fact it is a diesel.
  • What got in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Mount Wise, so say which.
  • Roughly how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle was in.
  • If it has run, how far plus how heavily — as well as if it has run at all.
  • Hire or company car? Some agreements want the owner's go-ahead for this work, and getting it before we turn up is quicker than after.

Then ring 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home and going nowhere — does the trick as well.

Mount Wise fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the harm while you wait. So hold to these.

  • Where the car has stopped settles where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, clear of the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety ahead of the vehicle.
  • A kind passer-by does not crank it. Nor does anybody wanting to check it still works, or moving it a few yards.
  • None of it gets that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from the boot. So no additives.
  • Draining it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond that tank remains where it is regardless.
  • The ignition stays off. Even for your radio or your windows.

Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one step at a time

  • Our quote comes after three queries, not before them — what was put in, how much, and if it has run — because those answers shape this job.
  • Clearing it's how the blend gets taken out of the tank.
  • Petrol that has shifted beyond the tank sits in the lines once it ran, and the lines are flushed to shift it.
  • Then your filter: replaced where there is a usable one, cleared where there is not.
  • Fresh diesel in, and the system primed.
  • The start. With fresh diesel in and the fuel system primed, it's fired up and tested to make sure it runs properly.

Till it runs on new diesel, our technicians stay with it. When it has been spotted soon, lasting damage is very unusual, and the car returns to normal use at once.

Back on the road around Mount Wise after the fuel drain

  • After it has been started on fresh fuel, there is nothing special to do: drive normally.
  • The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your cue to stop then call us again.
  • Keep your documents. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was carried out.
  • The handle's colour isn't the guide to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
