Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Mountain Ash

Do not turn on your engine. If the petrol is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not yet run, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that gets determined in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, all over Mountain Ash and the remainder of Rhondda Cynon Taf, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. One call to us will be plenty: we can show you what happens from here. Try it straight away.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for several miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't crank it. And if started, don't trust it: your fuel system is grinding while you drive.
  • Leave the ignition alone as well. Diesel performs two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it greases the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning the ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, which moves this petrol out of that tank and into just those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests — so don't tip diesel on top to water down it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A vehicle that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on A4059? Hazards on, then leave the car there. A difficult place works for us better than a started diesel.
  • The van arriving rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode starting CF45 4, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Have both prepared before you phone.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, roughly how many litres, plus if the car has run. Those three replies decide your whole job.

Draining petrol from a diesel on a forecourt

The work begins at a pump, generally. Quite often it finishes on site too. Still at Esso? Then that's typically where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the owner.

Nowhere else other than a forecourt can it be spotted with your engine still cold. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where it is. It does mean your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the keys.

Push it out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Firing it to shift four car lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Mountain Ash

Our technicians will get to you, clear that tank, flush your fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can drive away. So if petrol went into the diesel Volkswagen Passat around Mountain Ash and you are sat outside Iceland with a boot loaded with shopping, call us — and do not fire it up again to get out of the bay. A mile or so at gentle throttle pulls very little fuel, so those are often the straightforward ones.

Three answers decide much of the work: what went in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for those answers when we get to your car in the car park outside Aberdare Hotel. Then the polluted mixture comes out of your tank, the lines are rinsed, and where your Audi A4 has a serviceable filter, it comes off. After fresh diesel is in and the system bled, our engineers start the car and make sure it runs correctly before you set off.

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off then call us. Happy on the way out to Caedrawnant Recreation Ground, flat on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol weakens diesel; thinner fuel slips past the precision components that build injection pressure; and the further your diesel Mercedes C-Class drove, the less of that pressure it held.

Hire car? Company car? Call them before us. Some contracts want the firm to approve the work, and that's much quicker dealt with up front than after that. Then call us about the Ford Fiesta, the diesel one, near St Margaret's Church. Don't worry that you cannot say how full that tank was — almost nobody can two days into a vehicle, and it is something we establish there. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of share. A few litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger blend, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.

Your filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail: that's where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. So the tank is not where most of the damage waits by this point, and a diesel Volvo XC60 that made it close to Mountain Ash Library needs the system purged rather than emptied.

Coverage around Mountain Ash

As a riverside town, Mountain Ash sees a routine visit, and the places nearby come along on that same round: Caegarw and Darranlas, Newtown and Cwmpennar, Miskin.

If yours is not on this list that does not mean we never come — there are pages for nearly all locations around Rhondda Cynon Taf, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours. Near a boundary, or somewhere a satnav can't find? Phone to ask instead of assuming.

This map outlines the area this page includes. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of it is territory we cover, and none of that needs the vehicle to travel to us.

Roadside call-outs in Mountain Ash

Not everyone has the chance to stop anywhere sensible. A common call for us and not an odd one: realised after setting off, finished up by the verge on Phillip Street or at a lay-by with the hazard lights on.

Whether you remain beside your car or move away from it hangs on if staying in it looks sensible. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to get to somewhere handier and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile driven. We will bring our van to a difficult place without any bother, and for your car that is far better than driving on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

The M4 is the road that counts now, and runs under 15 miles from Mountain Ash. A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. It changes what our engineers bring, so tell us when you ring: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

Our visit in Mountain Ash, step by step

  • Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • The tainted fuel comes out of the tank.
  • What is left in your system shouldn't be what started the problem, and so the lines get purged and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Your system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • We turn it on and check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That leaves the car ready to drive away. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it's spotted quickly, lasting damage is very rare.

Mountain Ash AdBlue removal is a different matter

The issue is not the same, though the first step is — do not fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol dilutes your diesel and takes away the protection the fuel system relies on. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal in Mountain Ash has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. We handle both.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Mountain Ash

We can't put one number on this page honestly, since the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much your tank holds.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and if a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around Mountain Ash

At a petrol station around Mountain Ash, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a large part of this work happens. We visit BP and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the station's permission — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the issue from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it is fixable far more often than motorists assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted. The pump still has to cope with it, since the tank still has petrol in it later.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.

Still with your vehicle?

Switched off is the way the car remains.

Switch it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from far more often than people fear, and a stationary, cold car is the best place to be in.
