Petrol in Diesel

Moxley: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, all over Moxley and the remainder of West Midlands. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While your engine has not run and the petrol is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much went in. Our engineers shall tell you what the next part is. Phone — this comes before everything else.

What to do next about petrol in a diesel

  • Never crank it. Fired up regardless? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually can't run, so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away normally, for a couple of miles. People get that reversed. It isn't okay — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
  • Leave your ignition be too. Diesel does two jobs: it burns, and before it combusts it greases that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Flicking your ignition on is usually enough to prime your system, which pulls this petrol out of your tank and into exactly those components.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort, so stay where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Bull Lane? Hazards on, then leave the car there. A difficult location suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode starting WS10 8, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of showing up.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three queries — what went in, roughly how much, and whether the car has been started. Your responses decide all that comes after.

The journey in is what pulled thinned diesel through the pump. Standing still has pulled nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, left outside Willenhall all day, waits harmless in the tank whilst it waits. Phone us first — before your keys turn.

What our technicians will want to know is if the trip there was short and cold, as that's where petrol is least able to burn fully — and whatever does not burn can get past the rings then into the oil. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel Ford Focus parked in the parking area outside The Fiery Holes with a tank of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing degrades while it sits, and so park the car overnight then phone us in the morning.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and thinner fuel seeps past the close-fitting parts that are meant to build that pressure, and so the farther a diesel Mercedes C-Class drove, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and gutless on the way back is how that run to Black Country Millennium Forest went, then, and that tank is where to look. Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off then call us.

Rarely the problem, the location. On-street is the usual place our engineers work, and a tight parking spot is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you ring from near All Saints, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can park next to without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then the Peugeot 3008 gets emptied, the fuel filter changed where a workable one exists, your lines cleaned and fresh fuel put through the entire circuit — since by now the worst of that is in the fuel lines, not the tank.

The fuel filter, your lines, the pump and the rail: that's where the mix is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with the tank contents. So the tank is not where most of the trouble rests by this point, and a diesel Vauxhall Astra that got near Blue Plaque: Gospel Oak Ironworks needs the circuit purged rather than emptied.

On the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

The job starts at a forecourt, mostly. Often enough it finishes there too. If you are still at the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that is typically where the drain happens — we work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's permission.

Before your engine has run — a garage is the single place it is stopped. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for your key settle how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter require cleaning as well as that tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still put it right where the vehicle is.

The attendants will usually offer to wheel it clear of the pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing. Moving the car four bays does not justify starting it.

Coverage in Moxley

Lower Bradley, Woods Bank, Gospel Oak, Catherine Cross, Loxdale — each of them on the runs that carry us over to Moxley as well, a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for most locations around West Midlands, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off that list says nothing at all about whether our technicians come. Assuming is the thing to avoid, above all on the border or anywhere the satnav struggles. Ring us and check.

The map marks the ground the page includes. Your vehicle never needs to travel to us. We operate over the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Roadside call-outs across Moxley

Not everyone gets a sensible spot to stop. Set off, then twigged? Landed along the verge on Bull's Bridge, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards on? That is a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Remain by the motor while it is sensible to wait there, and clear of it when it is not. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to reach somewhere better and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven. Pressing on does your car far more harm than a van heading out to an awkward location, and that's no trouble for us.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the local M6 comes into it — under 3 miles away from Moxley. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you ring. It changes what we bring.

All about Moxley

Moxley is a suburban area in the West Midlands, situated on the riverside at an elevation of around 130 metres. Moxley lies approximately 4 miles from Wolverhampton and is near other local places such as Lower Bradley and Woods Bank. Moxley has a population of around 4364 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing. Moxley is located about 109 miles northwest of London, in a region of England with a mix of industrial and natural landscapes.

What we do when we reach you around Moxley

  • Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Away flows the tainted fuel.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later is not the thing that created the problem.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • It is started with clean diesel in it, and our engineers check that it is running properly.

Then it's ready to set off. We do everything wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught early, it is very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Moxley?

The issue is not the same, though the first rule is — don't start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and build-up.

Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal in Moxley has its own page with the details — including why it is often the more significant of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Moxley?

One figure wouldn't be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the key one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly reach your car and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. If it's not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Things we hear about petrol in diesel around Moxley

At a petrol station in Moxley, can you do a fuel drain there?

A large portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Our engineers work at Esso and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your motor has run matters far more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable much more regularly than motorists fear.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a modification and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different fault. So no. Your pump still has to cope with it, since the tank still has petrol in it later on.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Still with your vehicle?

Never turn your engine on again.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off. This is recoverable from far more regularly than people expect, and a stationary, cold car is the best place to be in.
