Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Muiredge? Don't Start It

Never fire up your engine. While the fuel is still inside your tank and your engine has not turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs — and that's decided in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, across Muiredge and the rest of Fife, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Call us and our engineers will show you what follows next before you try anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Do not crank it. Started all the same? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically won't run, and so the person stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for a couple of miles. Most people get that backwards. It is not all right — that fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.
  • Leave the ignition be also. Diesel does two jobs: it ignites, and before it burns it greases that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime your system, which draws the petrol out of the tank and into just those components.
  • Do not add diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies, and topping up clears nothing — it merely leaves you a larger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Our team would sooner get to an odd spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to handle than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on Thrush Avenue, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.
  • Keep your whereabouts ready before you ring. A postcode starting KY8 1 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van showing up and the van circling.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, roughly how much, and also if the engine has started. Those three answers determine the entire visit.

Nothing about the time since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is dormant, so a diesel Volkswagen Golf sitting outside Cameron Bridge this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pushed weakened diesel through your pump was the journey in. Phone us before you set off to collect the car.

You'll be urged to move the vehicle out of the gateway and sort it out later. Don't. On the zig-zags outside the local primary school, a misfilled Skoda Octavia running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Fire it up three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime pulls more petrol past the filter on to your pump. Let them grumble. Phone us.

Never chance it. The journey home from Buck and Hind is entirely possible, which is precisely the trouble — a weakened tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears down the parts the fuel is meant to lubricate. Phone us, then let the Peugeot 308 stay where it stands.

Most of these occur somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical not slapdash — almost no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Audi A3, a fill-up by Kingdom Hall that you didn't think about? Ring us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at your injectors.

What occurs next is the trouble. Your engine straight away draws the petrol still waiting in the filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, since emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put clean diesel in, somebody certain will tell you — and that tip is only half right, because do it to a diesel Citroen C4 Picasso parked up, Buckhaven Baptist Church say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Call us instead. Our engineers flush your circuit and take the fuel filter off where the vehicle has a working one, and that's the difference between the vehicle being put right and your car simply starting.

On the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

Plenty of the job begins at a forecourt, which means a big chunk of it gets done at one. Still at BP? Then that is generally where it takes place. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the site.

Nowhere else other than a garage can the mistake be stopped with the motor still unrun. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key determine how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter need rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where your car is.

Attendants will normally pitch in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Welcome the assistance. Cranking it just for four vehicle lengths? No.

Service in Muiredge

The same journeys take us to Denbeath, Buckhaven, Methilhill, Cameron and Cameron Bridge along with Muiredge, which is a residential suburb.

There are pages for nearly all towns around Fife, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from that list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come. Ring us to check instead of guessing, especially where you are on the boundary or anywhere a satnav can't find.

That map marks the area this page spans. The car does not need to move to us. We work over all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded by the roadside somewhere in Muiredge?

Not everyone gets a chance to stop anywhere sensible. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Martin Street as you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it's the normal kind.

Fine there? Remain with it. Not okay? Move out and away from it. Never restart the motor to limp it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into your fuel system. However inconvenient the spot, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that is far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

This is where the local M90 comes in, under 15 miles out of Muiredge. A misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are generally a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

Take the first junction that is safe, stop there, and don't start it to reposition. Suppose the worst of that on a long trip. Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

Where's Muiredge?

Muiredge is a coastal suburban area in Fife, situated near the towns of Denbeath, Buckhaven, and Methilhill. Muiredge has a population of around 3159 people and is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock. Muiredge sits at an elevation of 35 metres, with views out to the Firth of Forth, and is located approximately 16.5 miles from Edinburgh. Muiredge forms part of the wider urban area along the Fife coast.

What happens when our engineers get to you around Muiredge

  • We ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers alter what the work actually is.
  • Away goes the polluted fuel.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that created the problem.
  • Your system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • The motor is fired up and tested to confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.

That leaves it ready to drive away. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been caught early, and as all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Muiredge AdBlue removal is a separate matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your engine remains off — while the fault beneath it is a distinct one altogether. Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the protection the system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and build-up instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Muiredge page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Muiredge costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One price would not be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much the tank can hold.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for a technician.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Questions we hear about petrol in diesel around Muiredge

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Muiredge?

Plenty of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's agreement our engineers attend Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more regularly than drivers assume.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not a modification, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it doesn't restore what petrol has thinned. That tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to live with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.

Is the car still with you?

Turned off is how the car remains.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later. A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than drivers expect.
